I started to make a list of Berkeley firms to boycott. I dont lightly believe that firms should pay the economic price for their city council views, but these firms are the enablers of one of the most repugnant regimes in our history and they unfortunately will be innocent casualties in the campaign. The city could not run without their tax dollars. Thus the boycott is on!
Obviously the German run Bayer, Berkeleys largest corporate job source is a top choice. http://www.bayerus.com/communities/berkeley/index.html

OK how does a boycott work in practice? Lets use sightspeed as an example. First we dig for information. Here is what 10 minuets of hunting got me. What can others dig up? http://www.sightspeed.com/business/customers
dig, dig, dig http://digitalmediaupdate.blogspot.com/2007/10/sightspeed-open-for-business-sightspeed.html

Second we email all the principals. A polite letter. State our case. Ask them to leave Berkeley. Repeat. CC to the Mayor, Chamber of Commerce and the press. We FIRMLY ask them to leave Berkeley. If there is no response we escalate. Email their customers. Escalate. Perhaps we put boots on the ground and picket.
Polite, dignified and steady pressure. Times 10. Times 100. If you are interested please bump this thread or Freepmail me. Eagles up.
A side note: I dont believe snark or extremely hot rhetoric will achieve what we want. Its fun to blow off steam here, real fun, but the economic boycott should be above that to achieve success. There are perhaps 100 other Berkeley firms that we need to email or call. From emailing Hilton and asking them to sell the Doubletree at the Berkeley marina, to asking associations not to have a meeting at HS Lordships http://www.hslordships.com/
Let's partner with MoveAmericaForward, GOE, HotAir, LGF and others. Whos in?

FReepmail me or BUMP the thread to be added to the NEW BOYCOTT BERKELEY ping list.
If i bought anything from Berkeley or lived close, this might be an effective use of my time. However, Neither of these are true at present.
Bill O’Reilly...love him or hate him - but this could be a notion he could help run with........
Also I'm request a pings to any other groups interested. So If you have a ping list, please distribute, as appropriate. (Sorry in advance for any duplicate pings)

Berkeley is the site of the global headquarters for the Hematology/Cardiology business unit of Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals and is home to almost all of the division’s biotechnology operations. Since January 1, 2006 the Pharmaceuticals Division consists of the former Biological Products and Pharmaceutical Divisions and now comprises three business units: Hematology/Cardiology; Oncology and Primary Care. The site focuses on the application of technologies for discovering, developing and producing protein therapeutics such as Bayer’s recombinant hemophilia therapy, Kogenate® FS/KOGENATE® Bayer [Antihemophilic Factor (Recombinant), Formulated with Sucrose].
The Bayer Diagnostics Molecular business is also located in Berkeley. Bayer’s Molecular business offers an innovative line of molecular assays and instrumentation. The group is dedicated to constantly developing new ideas and tests to provide the best solution to fit a particular infectious disease. A range of technologies - bDNA, TMA, PCR, or the next significant advancement - are developed and implemented to enable better disease management decisions.
The history of the Berkeley site extends back more than 100 years. It opened in 1903 as an expansion of Cutter Laboratories, of Fresno, California, taking advantage of the San Francisco Bay-cooled climate to develop human and animal vaccines. In time, the campus began producing plasma fractions, intravenous solutions and blood supplies. Cutter was acquired by Bayer AG in 1974, and became part of Miles, Inc., a subsidiary of Bayer AG, in 1987. Miles formally became Bayer in 1995.
Today, there are more than 1,500 employees based in Berkeley who are involved in research and development, production, marketing and sales. As a major employer in the Bay Area, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals has an unwavering commitment to investing in the local community and has been recognized often for its efforts towards protecting the environment and promoting a diverse workforce.
I’ve been waiting for a list like this.
Will print it and magnet it to refrigerator.
Count me in.

Brian, I would be honored if you would join as your letter started the effort.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
On Jan 31, 2008 I wrote a letter to the Mayor of Berkeley stating my position regarding his and the City Counsels position on the USMC recruiting station.
I passed that letter along to a couple of Marine handball buddies. They passed that email/letter to the guys who play in the Semper Fi handball tournament at MCRD, who passed it along to, who passed it along to, etc.
In my wildest dreams I never envisioned the response I have received. I now spend ALL DAY answering my cell phone acknowledging that yes, I really did write THE letter, and receiving personal thank yous from Generals, Majors, Colonels, SGTs, PVTs, CEOs, COOs, talk show hosts, and average everyday American Patriots. I have received over 600 calls in the past two days (today is the 8th of Feb.) I am privledged and honored to speak with the finest and best people America has to offer.
Likewise I spend the balance reading emails from the same sort of people.
I am humbled to a degree that is hard to state clearly. I am emotionally overwhelmed with the positive response to my letter and want to thank everyone who has called me or emailed me to state their support.
My intention was never to shine the spotlight on me, it was to cause, to whatever degree I could, great fiscal discomfort to the city of Berkeley in retaliation to their un-American, cowardly and despicable stance that the US Marines are unwelcome, and uninvited intruders in their city.
If in my small way I helped light a fire that now appears to be blazing across the nation, I am proud of that, but I am more proud of the fact that I could , at a time when our heroes are fighting against those who would destroy us, help focus some attention to the vast debt, and undying respect, that we as a nation owe to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces.
Respectfully,
Brian G Dennard
Dear Mayor Bates, Jan 31, 2008
In that you and your city have chosen to gravely insult the brave men and women, who have indeed bought you that right with their blood, I am informing you that my company will no longer do business with any of our current suppliers located in the Berkeley,California metro area.
In that my company is in international resort real estate development, and do business with and am associated with, developers and investors worldwide, I am informing all of my contacts, associates and patrons that we will no longer do any business of any sort with anyone living in the Berkeley area.
In that we/MDG Resorts are currently building a state of the art mega-yacht marina, all of the suppliers of Marina equipment, all owners of Yachts , all suppliers of Yacht materials & supplies, all yacht brokers and all tangential yacht business purveyors will likewise be informed that we will not do any business whatsoever with anyone from the Berkeley area.
Likewise all suppliers of building materials, both interior and exterior, currently associated with any of our several resort developments (Brisamar 300+ villas and 200+ condos: Porto Hussong, www.portohussong.com 500+ condos, 180 slip mega-yacht marina) both of which I might add have international recognition by virtue of glowing reports in Robb Report, Wall Street Journal, Yacht World, Forbes.
I will likewise inform all of our investors, most of whom are very wealthy yacht owners, casino owners, high net worth international businessmen, of our decision to essentially boycott all products and providers located in, or associated with in any way whatsoever,Berkeley, Ca.
Trust me when I say that having been in the real estate development business for over 35 years, our list of contacts and associates is long and very, very impressive. We, and I personally, are going to recomend that they ALL along with us boycott your city, its purveyors, suppliers, and businesses and CHARITIES of every kind.
You have every right to choose to take the obnoxious anti-military stance you have taken, and as stated, that right was bought for you with the blood of better men than you.
I too have every right to do all that I can to insure that your city suffers consequences arising from that obnoxious, sickening stance.
Cordially,
Brian G Dennard

please add me to the list..
Boycott & BOO Berkeley.
You can boycott companies by going to Berkeley’s Better Business Bureau and search for businesses in Berkeley.
And .. while we’re cutting off federal funds to Berkeley (hopefully) .. I hope Bezerkeley don’t have a natural disaster - and then expect the Marines to come and rescue them .. I sure wouldn’t want to help them after the way they have treated these special military people.
I’m sure you think this is a great idea, but the people who you want to suffer as a result of this won’t. The people who aren’t responsible will. The problem with boycotts of this nature is that they only hurt those who are actually productive.
Bump, and please add me to the list!
Howdy,
I wasn’t familiar with any of the businesses listed. That got me wondering if there were some businesses in Berkeley I was familiar with. That brought me to check the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce. I think you should check their site for a very pleasant surprise. They might be able to assist your effort. Most importantly, you wouldn’t want to bring unintentional, indirect harm upon any businesses that share our views. There could be some strong allies among them. http://www.berkeleychamber.com/
bump for later.... good luck with your boycott
Bayer has a division that deals with Diabetic testing equipment. The 2 main meters they sell are the CONTOUR® and BREEZE®2. Meters are cheap. The REAL money is in the test strips used with them. The strips are about one dollar EACH. The average Diabetic tests between 3 and 10 times a day. That adds up real fast.
If you use the CONTOUR® or the BREEZE®2 there are many other meters available to use instead. Often you can get a replacement meter for free by contacting the Company, through your Certified Diabetic Educator, or your Doctor.
The merchant tax base supports the City Council. Rather than taking out the trash, the firms encourage it or at least tolerate it, and the filth spreads. I suggest they move, because the objective is to reduce Berkeley to the economic equivalent of Fallujah.
I'm sorry, some individuals will suffer economically in upscale BERKELEY, but there is a young Marine, or a special forces operative overseas... sitting alone in a dark, cold foxhole, wondering if the next bullet has his name on it....wondering if anyone cares. I CARE, as do the 20 thousand other people who signed the petition.
BOYCOTT BERKELEY
You don't really need to be. Go to their web site, dig a little and post the emails of the owners, principals and management. Post their names/emails here and they will receive more than one email asking them to leave. Start with gathering the emails of sightspeed if you want.

Bump to your post.
Very interesting and you are correct that one should be careful to not alienate your allies.
BTTT!
huh, didn’t know that. Cardiac division, eh?
I find aspirin to be the miracle it was touted to be. I take a 325 Bayer every other day for medicinal purposes.
I can take another brand for the short term.
Guess I’ll send them an email
Sorry dude, we’ll never agree. I think it’s going to hurt the little guy who can’t afford to move. He/she probably cringes at the city council’s actions.
The movers and shakers in Berkely will be unaffected by your boycott. Sorry. Can’t support it.
I suspect you are correct...One example is the large convention trade that comes in to town for conventions. There is a waiter serving food, or a housekeeper cleaning a room that will suffer along with the owner of the hotel. But we need to put a perspective on it... Their suffering will be minor relative to the suffering the troops endure. Very minor.
A good place to start is to notify the Berkley Chamber of Commerce a boycott is inevitable due to the anti military city government. There are plenty of military friendly locations for businesses to move to.
That should grab their attention in the business community.
Any business that does not want to be hurt should draft a letter to the city government voicing their displeasure and vowing to find suitable replacements.
Like the Muslims who do not speak out against terrorism, the silence of any business would be construed as supporting the city council.

TexasCajun, got an email from them. their response is below.

..........................................................
The Berkeley Chamber of Commerce has heard from individuals far and wide regarding recent Berkeley City Council actions and we appreciate that the American spirit is alive and robust.
The business community was not notified of pending city council action, nor asked for input.
We ask everyone to try to separate the actions of the City Council and not harm the good, hard-working small business owners - most of whom do not live in Berkeley and therefore cannot vote in Berkeley.
Additionally, we believe that the Berkeley City Council owes an apology to the community and others, whether they be a Marine or a hard-working business owner, folks that are just trying to do their job in this terrible economy, and which is now more difficult because their actions. We feel that granting a parking space in front of the Marine’s office is harassment for them and their neighbors, and should be rescinded.
In the long term, we expect collaboration with the Mayor and City Council when considering actions which may impact our local businesses and community.
The Berkeley Chamber of Commerce believes in a community where all voices are heard in a fair manner.
At the same time, we believe that it is NOT in the spirit of free speech to grant favoritism to any viewpoint, whether we agree with that viewpoint or not.
Unfortunately recent City Council actions coincide with a very weak national economy.
As in many cities and towns across America, hard-working business owners, (85% of Berkeleys businesses) have less than five employees, operate on a thin margin, and rely heavily on their walk-in customers. The housing and credit crisis have resulted in an unstable economy and a risky business environment. Combined with recent council action, our business community is painfully feeling the revenue loss.
The Berkeley Chamber of Commerce is proud that we promote, connect and strengthen business and community. In short, we are all here to help each other be successful, and to work together to create the best Berkeley possible, one that is inviting and respectful for all.
Berkeley lauds itself as the birthplace of free speech, a tremendous gift to America. We believe it works both ways, and in a fair manner.

The Marines are watching his back while "the little guy" lets this crap happen?!
Those days are gone, as are the days of protests going unanswered. Those days were the 60's and the people who chose to do nothing or didn't know enough to do something had a name or didn't realize how actions like this would affect our troops and our country had a name. It was called the Silent Majority. The Silent Majority is dead. Well, most of it anyway. I see there are hangers-on.
