Bottled water 'is immoral'
The Telegraph ^ | 2/17/2008

Posted on 02/16/2008 8:46:48 PM PST by bruinbirdman

Drinking bottled water should be made as unfashionable as smoking, according to a government adviser.

"We have to make people think that it's unfashionable just as we have with smoking. We need a similar campaign to convince people that this is wrong," said Tim Lang, the Government's naural resources commissioner.

Phil Woolas, the environment minister, added that the amount of money spent on mineral water "borders on being morally unacceptable".

Their comments come as new research shows that drinking a bottle of water has the same impact on the environment as driving a car for a kilometre. Conservation groups and water providers have started a campaign against the £2 billion industry.

A BBC Panorama documentary, "Bottled Water: Who Needs It?", to be broadcast tomorrow says that in terms of production, a litre bottle of Evian or Volvic generates up to 600 times more CO2 than a litre of tap water.

I just stocked up with 20 bottles of Walmart’s Strawberry and Black Cherry water. I’m hooked on the stuff and it’s cheap so this guy can kiss my carbonated butt.

This is already the fad in California. Trendy restaurants are serving...tap water!

Newsom banned buying bottled water for San Francisco city/county govt use.

I don't know about immoral, but it is downright idiotic to pay for something that one can essentially obtain for free.

It's no coincidence that Evian is "naive" spelled backwards.

If people want to spend their money on bottled water, what possible business is it of pointy head bureaucrats like Mr. Woolas?

Its almost like Woolas et al are just looking for new things to regulate to torment the people.

I believe this kind of thing led to the Declaration of Independence “He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.”

Immoral, no. Stupid, yes. Bottled water is convenient in some cases, but people buy it way too much in my opinion. But if they’re willing to buy it, that’s their decision.

I’ve pretty much gotten to the point where if any kook British newspaper is for something, I’m against it.

Come to think of it, I feel the same way most of the time, about American newspapers as well...

Thing is, in Britain the kook newspapers, seem to have seized control.

I wash out and refill my empty 2 liter pop bottles with water, for emergency use or whatever. Have a little over a 100, including dozens in an extra refrigerator to act as a heat load for it.

When bottled water is outlawed, only outlaws will have bottled water. Come and get them.

"I just stocked up with 20 bottles of Walmart’s Strawberry and Black Cherry water."

Interesting. Flavored sugar water with CO2- 79 cents/2 liter jug. Bottled water $1.79/liter. Tap water - $1.00/1000 gallons.

I pay 50 cents per liter (I think it just went up to 58 cents). I try to drink a lot of water and tap water just doesn’t cut it so I buy the non caloric flavored water. It also replaced the diet Pepsi I use to buy. I love this stuff.

You see, according to Cocteau’s plan I’m the enemy, ‘cause I like to think; I like to read. I’m into freedom of speech and freedom of choice. I’m the kind of guy likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder - “Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecued ribs with the side order of gravy fries?” I WANT high cholesterol. I wanna eat bacon and butter and BUCKETS of cheese, okay? I want to smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section. I want to run through the streets naked with green Jell-o all over my body reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly might feel the need to, okay, pal? I’ve SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It’s a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing “I’m an Oscar Meyer Wiener”.

Got an observation:

California no longer sets trends.

Between regressive Hollywood leftists, and illegal immigrants, California is getting dumber by the day.

The west coast’s day as trend-setter, is over.

Next comes the bill.

He may be on to something there. However, when I deployed to Spain in 2005, we were specifically told NOT to drink the tap water, instead drink local bottled water (bottles free for the taking EVERYWHERE on base.)

One caveat, though...the bottled water was heavy on sodium, which makes you thirsty, which makes you drink more water, etc...

I came back to the States after 4 months, weighing 10 lbs more than I did when I left. All water weight...had to sweat it out for weeks.

I only care that it is expensive. I carry a Polyethylene Nalgene bottle to work, etc and fill ‘er up for free from water fountains. Though, I have to admit, I have been to some cities where the tap water is so high in (harmless) organics like geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol that I’m tempted to buy the bottled.
