PRISTINA (Reuters) - Kosovo Albanians will proclaim independence from Serbia on Sunday, ending a long chapter in the bloody breakup of Yugoslavia but cementing a bitter ethnic frontline in the Balkans.
Kosovo will be the 6th state carved from the Serb-dominated federation since 1991, after Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Montenegro, and the last to escape Serbia's embrace.
The Serbs vow never to give up the land where their history goes back 1,000 years.
They will reject independence in defiance of the Albanians and their Western backers and will keep their grip on strongholds in northern Kosovo, making the ethnic partition of the new state a reality from the start.
President George W. Bush said the United States, which has 1,700 troops in Kosovo's NATO-led peacekeeping force of 16,000, would work with its allies to make sure there was no violence.
"The United States will continue to work with our allies to do the very best we can to make sure there's no violence," he said during a visit to Tanzania. Bush added that he was heartened by the Kosovo government's proclaimed willingness to support Serbian rights.
Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said on Saturday: "The success of Kosovo's independence as a new beginning will be clearly measured by respect for the rights of minorities, especially Serbs."

Wonder if our troops will have to go to Kosovo to impose a Muslim state on Europe at the same time we’re fighting radical Islam in the Middle East?
The BBC has been reporting on how Kosovo is set to declare independence for almost a day now.
P.S. Of the opinion that Kosovo should be a part of Serbia, but the region is almost definitely going to become independent, and that would be interesting. A new state doesn't pop into existence every day.
Before this is over we will see Russian troops in northern Kosovo defending the Serbian enclave there.
And U.S. again supporting the wrong side :-(
Hey Clinton said the troops would be home by Christmas? I wonder which year?
(to hell with islam)
When 80% of California becomes Mexican, I guess they have the right to declare that state part of Mexico. That’s what Bill Clinton did with our bombing of Kosovo. And yes, why can US troops be tied up there for decades, but not in Iraq? Someone needs to ask Hillary that question.
It would be interesting to get her thoughts on it. Anyone think that will come up in a future debate?
Cease Fire terms... Pfft.
The US is on the wrong side of history on this, and we are sowing the seeds of a future war in the region.
Why are we supporting a Muslem dominated Kosovo over the Orthodox Christians of Serbia and what remains of the ethnically cleansed Christians in Kosovo. If we can not control the few Christians left in Iraq and the Middle East, how can we then prevent their persecution in Kosovo.
This could turn ugly very fast.
Maybe in 2030 the Chinese will bomb Washington DC in order to “protect” the Mexican majority of California’s wish to leave the USA.
Time to bring back the Hapsburgs.
I wonder how much security is around today's Kosovo Parliament meeting? It would seem to be an obvious target.
The Germans are once again supporting their Nazi ally Albanians!
"War on Terror," my @ss. This country is building an empire, and we really don't give a sh!t if that involves the outright persecution of Christians on behalf of Muslims.
So I guess 'gen' Weaselly Clark will get his war with Russia after all.
[I think I saw this picture before. It was 1914]
“War on Terror,” my @ss. This country is building an empire, and we really don’t give a sh!t if that involves the outright persecution of Christians on behalf of Muslims.
Total bullshit. Stupid post of the day.
and I do not like the stand vs the Serbs at all, but you throw the word “empire” around like its supposed to mean something that it clearly does not.
sounds like Howard Dean.
Albertas Child is a Ron-Paulist... don’t expect anything worthwhile.
If the U.S. and Western nations recognizes this outrage, we will be sowing the seeds for racial, ethnic and Sharia separatist movements everywhere in the West.
I hope the Russians do just that. They are the good guys, if they do.
What would be the point? Every candidate is on the same page with it. RINO or RAT
More like 2011.
Probably not. The time for the ultimatum is long past.
we already have troops there and they will kill any Christians who resist.
The current occupant fully supports it as will the future occupant from either party.
It appears we aren't even going to try.
I think it's too late to stop it. Europeans have been so homogenized regarding not showing any prejudice that their will to retain any sense of identity of their own has atrophied to the point of near suicide.
You said "Christmas"! Racist!
I don't know about "neo-cons" but it is certainly true that many prominent Republicans, including Bob Dole, called for intervention in Kosovo against the Serbs and on behalf of the murderous Islamist Albanians. I was against it then and I still am today.
Looks like their “perfect war” continues to unravel. Wonder who they’ll blame.
Yes, we will, but it is even worse than you stated. The US worked tirelessly to create this monster. Other separatist movements that take their inspiration from the creation of an independent Kosovo and the resultant bloodshed will be the dragon's teeth offspring of Bill Clinton's decision (And Bush's failure to reverse it).
You should change your name to KLA Republican, I’m sure McCain has already cashed your check.
I think that you are right -- except it isn't "an Empire" for America; it is "Two Empires" for globalists like Soros to exploit.
The US was the biggest supporter of an EU. Why? Because "one voice of Europe" is easier to deal with the the multiple voices of individual countries. The EU is run by a handful of elite.
And the US? Well, how come Clinton, Obama and McCain, all have Soros' hand up their backside? And Soros may be the guy we know about, how much you want to bet that there are more "Soroses" whose names we do not know?
This globalist elite will trample Christians without a second thought -- and will do the same to you & me when they get the chance. The US is being used by these people -- and they will just as easily and without conscience, carve up and then throw America away when they are done with it, too. And we are letting them.
Dioguardi’s wet dream about becoming Greater Albania’s first prime minister will soon be realized
The only man who is standing up to Soros has been Putin. And look how the non-Russian press trashes him! Yes, Soros is in a great position of power now — but with McCain at least you get a domestic conservative. With Obama you’ll get a globalist who will dine with Odinga and company.
By the way, Obama campaigned for Odinga in Kenya a couple of years back — why doesn’t Odinga come over and bring some of his supporters? Love to see the faces of some of these empty-headed campus types when they’d meet up with these cuddly types.
The seeds of a nasty Albanian civil war have just been sown.
With McCain, you get a guy who made his bones nationally by killing Christians to please Muslims. I don’t see much difference today among the candidates, Soros, the Muslim agenda and globalists own Clinton, Obama & McCain. They are just different flavors of the same crap, designed to make it look like we have “a choice” when all the horses have the same owners.
Bush didn't merely "fail to reverse" it, he wholehearted EMBRACED Kosovo independence. So much so that they welcomed him as a national hero in Albania. World gone mad.
Go scratch, loser
Screw the bloody serbs and the horse they rode in on. I don't support people who actually shoot at Americans, and anyone who does is no patriot.
>>Isn’t it peculiar how there is no outcry from the left in the United States about its mission as it drags into its second decade with troops at risk and with no UN mandate. The UN will not even be able to recognize the new country.<<
I thought we were doing this under NATO.
