The White Male Voter and Hillary
Townhall.com ^ | February 8, 2008 | Kathryn Jean Lopez

Posted on 02/17/2008 8:06:25 AM PST by FUMETTI

Hillary Clinton has a man problem. And this time its bigger than just Bill.

Take a look at the exit polls coming out of the primaries thus far. Men are going for Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton. In California, men went for Obama, 51 percent to Clinton's 39 percent, according to the San Jose Mercury News. In South Carolina, 55 percent of men voted for Obama, with only 23 going for Clinton. (Edwards took the bulk of the rest.)

This is not about sexism. But try telling that to feminists Gloria Steinem and Erica Jong, who both recently wrote whiny op-eds about the urgency of voting for girl power now. I suspect the folks going for Obama are casting their votes for the undefined, middle-of-the-spectrum candidate. Although, according to National Journal, he is the most liberal senator in the U.S. Senate, he doesn't come off that way on the campaign trail: Obama sounds and looks conservative enough that even conservative pundits have had good things to say about him -- a fact that promises to be a detriment to those conservatives if he becomes the Democratic nominee.

Actually, Hillary's man problem is not all Hillary's. It is a Democratic problem, one that has been previously obscured or ignored. Political observers have long been more interested in a supposed Republican gender gap with women. The reality of a woman running for president, though, has put a spotlight on the real gender divide. The Democrats have slowly and consistently been losing men.

In a Democratic Leadership Council study called "The White Male Problem," former deputy assistant for domestic policy under Bill Clinton, William A. Galston, identified the problem in 2000. Beginning with Great Society programs, he highlighted a series of factors that turned white males off the Democratic Party.

He writes, "By the 2000 presidential election, the majority of upscale white men came to believe that they needed nothing from government except to be left alone, while many downscale white men concluded that government either did not understand how to help them or did not care enough to do so. Because differing attitudes toward the role of government continue to define the left-right continuum in American politics, the rise of antigovernment sentiment among white men produced a shift toward ideological conservatism.

"And because the major political parties have become more ideologically polarized, this shift in white male sentiment led inexorably to a move away from the Democrats."

The problem is much older than Obama's political career. No Democratic candidate for president has won more than 43 percent of the white male vote since 1976.

What can they do? Galston advised, "In many respects, white men are looking for the same reassurance that the Democratic ticket failed to provide voters in the 1970s and 1980s, but successfully conveyed in the 1990s -- that Democrats share their values, look out for their economic interests and will stand up for America's role in the world. In 1996, that message helped Bill Clinton to carry white voters in the East and Midwest and to nearly do so in the West."

Hillary Clinton's explicit play for women, her tendency to rely on government rather than personal freedom and her insistence that the first thing she's going to do as president is start to move U.S. troops out of Iraq may not help.

As my colleague Kate O'Beirne put it in her book, "Women Who Make the World Worse":

"Republicans have been made to feel that they face intractable women problems, but they have been able to bridge a divide that remains a treacherous gulf for the Democrats. The Democratic Party has been hurt as a result of its feminization at the clenched fists of the feminists in its base."

Al Gore and John Kerry were bad news for Democrats who needed men to help carry them to victory. Political life with Hillary Clinton isn't looking like it will make the situation any better. Man, that will be a loss for the Dems.

How come white males are not discussed as a voting block? Is it because we are the "oppressors," the spoiled angry white men who have everything and want more, or is it because there are too many "white old men" in politics according to popular opinion?

I’m sure your question was rhetorical, but for the lurkers...

white males are not openly admitted to being a voting bloc because it is part of the marginalization process of the Left, which is a part of their plan to subvert American tradition with multiculturalism. First they marginalize white males. Then they elevate non-white males and especially females. By the comparison, white males are seen to be inferior and oppressive and in need of being replaced.

But here’s where their catch is, the Left has no intent of replacing white males with non-whites and non-traditional-males. Their goal is to replace them with Leftists. It doesn’t matter what their race or sex is, they must all conform to the Leftist/Stalinist ideology.

White males are only mentioned as a voting bloc when mentioning that bloc demonizes that bloc, as the Left referred to it right after the 94 midterms when the ‘angry white male’ voted those poor, helpless, defenseless Democrat victims who are just trying to save America out of office.

Amen, brother. When I see nasty women executives walking around the halls where I work, see their bodies falling apart, their hair looking a wreck and their faces drawn tight with conference-room battles and the worries of being kicked out for not making the numbers I just smile and say, “You wanted to be a leader in hell. Welcome to the flames.”

I’ve been somewhat suprised that most of women I know actually don’t like Hillary.

Some hate her, but some just don’t want her to be President because they know it will be poisoning the well for decades for any future female hopefuls.

The few that do support her, are the ones that are still enamored by Bubba and his percieved “accomplishments” in the 90’s.

She gets paid for this? She being a new conservative then she has common agreement with those on the other side that white men are to be submissive unless called upon to fight an ideological battle. They are the Jannisaries of the day, used but not spoken of, and at all times to be under suspicion. So be it, but she should admit it and attempt to clarify it rather than obfuscate.

Well, I'd say that the Dem's problem is that they're losing real men. There's gracious plenty of metrosexual, emotionally stunted, regressively traumatized, and sexually confused males within the Democratic party. But how can a real man measure himself against such a low bar as has been defined by the Leftist, victimized, dependent mind?

They need to break the numbers out by Gay white men and Straight white men.

Most of the ones that are left in the Dem party are the gays.

The Dems have not pandered or proposed solutions to straight white men for decades.

Even Hillary’s alleged ‘we need to fix the high child support orders’ was only focused on the BLACK man. The poor white man was not included in that relief.

P.S. The gender gap in minority districts is close to 20% {versus the 5% of less in the rest of the country}. Small wonder that their politicians distinctly favor policies for working women only.

THE TOP SYMPTOM OF THE DISEASE IS THE YAWN THEY ALL GIVE TO THIS PROBLEM ‘Child support orders can exceed 100% of a man’s income...’

A lot of people like the Clintons because they think the Clintons are going to stick it to the people they don’t like. On that list of people not liked are white males. It’s ridiculous backlash for things that the vast majority of living American white males had no role in. This kind of generalized hatred, and that’s what it is, can tear the country apart unless checked. The Clintons have no interest in stopping these attitudes. Their interest is in using wedges and factions to develop loyal voting blocks. They are the ultimate ‘divide and conquer’ politicians.

People like Erica Jong are demeaning to women as well as men. I don’t know about ‘angry white males’, but they are clearly angry white females.

The sad thing to me is that erasing the double standard in society, an often stated goal of feminists, has translated into bestowing upon women those things that have been least admirable about men. There are many examples.

Instead of holding men’s feet to the fire to be more responsible in relationships and to not be promiscuous, the feminists pushed for more ‘open sexuality’ in women and decided they could only be equal when they too were having casual encounters. Instead of insisting that men keep their priorities straight and put family before career, they decided that a better fix was for women to put career before family. I believe in equality. Unfortunately that equality is focused upon some of the least desirable behaviors and lowest common denominators among us. Go write some trashy books Erica, and leave us alone.

While I didnt like Kerry, Dukakis, Gore, etc-I always felt that were sincere in their thinking. If push came to shove, I could see myself pulling the lever for a democrat.

But not Hillary. Put a gun to my kids’ heads and it would still be a tough choice. Never. Not ever going to happen.

And I am not alone. She is going to start out with half of the population hating her.

John, I think it is more fundamental than that. If you are a white male, rich or poor, there is no focused (or unfocused, for that matter) help coming for you from any government.

Rich or poor, the white male has only three roles to play in this psychodrama:
1. To represent the evil oppressor who is keeping everyone else down
2. To pick up the tab for the goodies for everyone but the white male
3. When things get really fouled up, to expend his life and treasure to save everyone else.

If you are a white male, a government, any government, can only hurt you and steal from you. There are no benefits set aside on your behalf. Even if you survive long enough to qualify for Social Security or Medicare, you are going to pay for two or three other people along with yourself before you collect a dime.

Hillary and the Dems. carry the standard for “women’s issues”: universal pre-school/childcare; universal health care; government intervention in social functions like parenting, nutrition, senior care. With increasing legions of single Moms and the two working person family, women are looking to government to provide, not only the traditional male function of a monthly paycheck, but the traditional nurturing female functions as well. This emphasis on “women’s issues” most likely alienates the white male vote. Although women have become breadwinners, most men have not assumed the traditional nurturing roles. These issues are just not their issues.
