Clinton wants U.S. to think Wisconsin vote is nothing
Capital Times ^ | 2/16/2008 | Joel McNally

Posted on 02/17/2008 12:39:36 PM PST by SJackson

Everybody is excited that once again the Wisconsin primary could really matter in deciding the Democratic presidential nominee just like it did back in 1960 when we put Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kennedy on the path to the presidency. But not so fast.

It appears the media have decided none of the primaries over the next few weeks really matters because Illinois Sen. Barack Obama is expected to win most of them.

The truth is, Obama has been on an incredible roll ever since South Carolina in late January, but the media seem to be deliberately downplaying his success.

Remember when New York Sen. Hillary Clinton was hanging on by the skin of her teeth after Obama won Iowa? Even she expected Obama to win New Hampshire. That's when she said New Hampshire didn't count, but wait until Super Tuesday.

Then Clinton surprised the pollsters, the media and her own campaign by winning New Hampshire. Suddenly, New Hampshire counted after all.

But because Obama was expected to win South Carolina, which came next, South Carolina didn't count, Clinton said. But wait until Super Tuesday, she said. That's the one that really counts.

Well, guess what? On Super Tuesday, Obama won 13 states to Clinton's eight, with New Mexico still muddled. By his own campaign's calculations, Obama declared he won a majority of the delegates as well.

You would never know that from the media coverage. Marching tightly in lockstep, the media almost unanimously declared that no one had won Super Tuesday. The day somehow came out dead even.

What part of 13 states to eight is so difficult to understand? Even more impressive, the states Obama won included just about every conceivable type of voter, by geography and demographics.

Obama won Northeastern states, Connecticut and Delaware; Southern states, Georgia and Alabama; Midwestern states, Illinois and Minnesota; Plains states, Missouri and Kansas; Western states, Utah, Idaho and North Dakota; and one crazy, old coot prospector state, Alaska.

It is true that Clinton won the two largest states, New York, where she's the senator, and California. But Obama had strong showings in both states and virtually everyone expects both New York and California to vote Democratic in November, no matter which candidate is nominated.

Besides, even if the story spun by the media had been true -- that Super Tuesday was a standoff -- that would have been a huge loss for Clinton.

Just a couple of weeks before Super Tuesday, polls showed Clinton with a huge lead in a majority of the states voting that day. That's why she kept saying it was the only primary that mattered.

But the longer the campaign continues and the more people see and learn about Obama, the more voters are attracted to him. Obama has increased support among younger voters, white men and African-Americans in every contest. The single group that most reliably favors Clinton is older, white women.

Because a majority of Latinos have voted for Clinton where they have been a factor, some Democrats worry about the campaign dividing blacks and Latinos.

But in the November election, any such division would melt away if Obama were nominated.

Even though Arizona Sen. John McCain, the likely Republican nominee, is one of the few Republicans who hasn't demonized Mexican immigrants, Latinos would have to be loco to vote for a Republican Party that advocates jailing and deporting them by the millions.

Forget February

Now that Super Tuesday has come and gone with Clinton failing to put away Obama -- and, in fact, losing big time to him -- Clinton has suggested the rest of February's primaries don't matter.

The next ones that really matter, according to her, are the Ohio and Texas primaries on March 4. Coincidentally, those are the next primaries where she hopes to do well.

It's easy to understand why Clinton is spinning so desperately. What's not so clear is why so many in the media seem to swallow it.

Last weekend, Obama widened his lead among elected delegates by sweeping Louisiana, Nebraska, Washington state and Maine. Some of his winning margins were enormous -- 57 percent of the vote in Louisiana and two-thirds in Nebraska and Washington.

While Obama has won states like Maine, Nebraska, Washington, Iowa, Idaho and Utah, there is something particularly offensive about the way Clinton and the media dismiss Obama's success in states with large African-American populations such as Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina.

Do the votes of African-Americans count less than white votes?

The enormous enthusiasm for Obama among African-Americans is a party strength, putting in play Southern states that have voted solidly Republican ever since the party of Lincoln betrayed its history by overtly courting racist Southern whites opposed to civil rights.

Neither Clinton nor the media really get to decide whether Wisconsin matters. Once again, we have a strong feeling we're on the side of history.

Typical progressive playing the race card.

Since Wisconsin's black population is half the national average, his suggestion is absurd.

If Hillary was a racist, white Wisconsin would be prime territory for her.

Tune in next month, I'll find something else to defend Hillary on.

This must make Wisconsin voters just as happy as when John Kerry uttered his infamous “Lambert Field” remark.

She wants the only issue to be the one she sent her little flying monkey Ickes out to spread yesterday - that it’s all down to superdelegates. And it’ll be WI and FL next week.

McNally. *SPIT*

Obama’s campaign just called me; I couldn’t hang up the phone fast enough! Husband said, “Good Lord! Did the phone just give you a shock or something?” LOL!

But...I will give them credit; they know that WI is currently immobilized with this blizzard we’re having. We’re sitting ducks, so this is a very good day for phoning the citizenry. I’ll let you know if Bubba or the Beast call me today. ;)

Liberal in denial.

Who fought against the civil rights bill in the 60's? The Democrats including Al Gore Senior and Robert "Sheets" Byrd, former "grand Whatever" of the KKK.

There is so much you have to erase from your mind to become a liberal, and stay that way. They must possess the mental equivalent of a paper shredder and every fact that is 'uncomfortable' goes in the shredder...problem solved.

Joel McNally is one of our many local lefty commentators. The Capital Times, the most reliably socialist (and proud of it) newspaper in the state, recently went to a two day a week distribution from six days. The left wants a black candidate so they can declare the U.S. racist when he is defeated. "Misogyny" just doesn't have the same cachet.

Can't post Bloomberg here, but some funny quotes in this article as Hillary and Obama debate the issues of the day, like a couple of kindergardeners.

It will take more than just speeches to fulfill our dreams—It takes a village, or an intern

If we don't inspire the country to believe again, then it doesn't matter how many policies and plans we have—plans, what plans.

It's not about speeches for me. It's not about the bright lights and the cameras---I know, I’ve seen your pictures.

she's best equipped to go ``toe-to-toe'' with Arizona Senator John McCain—like to see that matchup

The most important thing we can do right now is to re- engage the American people---re-engage the American people as we disengage the American military

Don't tell me hope doesn't matter—to one of the two candidates with connections to Hope.

That's a pretty good track record for somebody who just talks all the time—from the one who talks all the time

Can't call them socialists or liberals, they're progressives. And I'd add in the country.

Hillary wants it both ways — renege on the agreement regarding the votes from Florida and Michigan and claiming any additional States she loses are unimportant.

What a Maroon.

I gotta give McCain credit here; I don’t think he’d have any qualms about hitting a (supposed) girl below the belt, LOL!

We had 3” of icy rain this morning, and then it started snowing around noon. There’s a break in the weather, so I just went out to do “chicken chores” and shovel a bit. I’d say we have 3” more right now, but it’s that heavy stuff that won’t even come off the shovel!

Anywhere from 6-10” total by morning, and another 3” tomorrow. Grrrrrrr! It’s pretty, though my trees and shrubs are really taking a beating with this heavy snow. Hopefully, nothing will snap and we won’t lose power, though it’s not going to be sub-zero or anything, so we can survive without heat for a day or so if need be.

I’m totally ready for Spring! :)

How well I remember that! Get a shovel full...bang the shovel on the ground. Rinse...repeat.

Well, it scared all of the candidates away, so there's a plus to it all.

Where have you been for the last 8 primaries. The Clinton's have been playing the race card day after day for the last several weeks.

I have some big news for you, the only prime territory left for the Clinton's is Michigan and Florida. Wait until you hear the racism from the Clinton's on these 2 states.

Pictured above:

The USS William Jefferson Clinton (CVS1) set sail today from its home port of Vancouver , BC.

The ship is the first of its kind in the Navy and is a standing legacy to President Bill Clinton "for his foresight in military budget cuts" and his conduct while president. The ship is constructed nearly entirely from recycled aluminum and is completely solar powered with a top speed of 5 knots. It boasts an arsenal comprised of one (unarmed) F14 Tomcat or one (unarmed) F18 Hornet aircraft which (although they cannot be launched or captured on the 100 foot flight deck) form a very menacing presence.

As a standing order there are no firearms allowed on board. The 20-person crew is completely diversified, including members of all races, creeds, sex, and sexual orientation. Don't ask-Don't tell! This crew, like the crew aboard the USS Jimmy Carter, is specially trained to avoid conflicts and appease any and all enemies of the United States at all costs!

A Type One DNC Universal Translator can send messages of apology in any language to anyone who may find America offensive. The number of apologies are limitless and, though some may sound hollow and disingenuous, the Navy advises that all apologies will be very sincere.

The ship's purpose is not defined so much as a unit of national defense, but instead in times of conflict the USS Clinton has orders to seek refuge in Canada . The ship may be positioned near the Democratic National Party Headquarters for photo-ops and can be used extensively for social experimentation and whatever other worthless jobs, the ex-commander-in-chief and his wife can think of.

It is largely rumored that the ship will also be the set for the upcoming season of MTV's "The Real World."

The ship was renamed and commissioned the USS William J Clinton when someone realized the name USS Blowfish was already taken.
