AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- The military is shutting down the Air Force Academy's emergency room and its hospital's inpatient services.

Two nearby civilian hospitals have the capacity to take over its more than 100,000 patients, authorities said.

The academy will phase out the services starting April 1, The Gazette of Colorado Springs reported. Outpatient services will still be offered.

The change comes as the military shifts more of its resources to cope with war casualties.

The academy's health staff will be cut by more than half from 45 to 21 as part of the overall federal Base Realignment and Closure Commission. The same plan will bring thousands more troops to Fort Carson, an Army post near the air academy.

The Air Force Academy patients will be sent to Memorial Hospital Central or Penrose Hospital.

The academy hospital had served about 30,000 families, retirees, active military and cadets. It also was the primary care provider or the provider of specialty care for 105,000 in the Colorado Springs area.

The Air Force Academy had been ranked the No. 1 hospital in the Air Force and among the best medium-sized hospitals in the military.

"The Air Force Academy patients will be sent to Memorial Hospital Central or Penrose Hospital."

Just as well for any sexual assault victims I suppose.

>Can you say ‘Illegal Aliens’...

And how would they get on to the Academy grounds?

Zero. You can't get on the Academy unless you need to be there.

specialty care for 105,000 in the Colorado Springs area.

** Wrong...that represents retirees in this area...I am one of them. ***

The article has that (you) listed separately, read this again..

The academy hospital had served about 30,000 families, retirees, active military and cadets. It also was the primary care provider or the provider of specialty care for 105,000 in the Colorado Springs area.

The way it's written 'Also' in the second sentence is, or should be, the operative word. As in .. 'besides the aforementioned it also was' ...

Maybe it's just written wrong. In any case its to early to argue over English grammar used in a newspaper.

The bottom line is a USAF hospital is closing and I'm betting Illegals and their unpaid bills are the cause. Like very other hospital that is or has closed since the invasion started the day after Dubya uttered 'we need comprehensive immigration reform' and the Mexicans read that as "AMNESTY".

You are correct...I missed the “also” - mea culpa. Having said that, I don’t think “illegals” are part of the equation. More likely, it is the Air Force trying to buy too many F-22’s...and sucking all the funds up. I use that hospital for my primary care facility, and there is no way immigrants of any flavor are going to access it. It is well within the restricted zone on the Academy grounds.

That already doesn’t sound like enough staff for that many people. The Georgia Tech infirmary had nearly 40 on staff for just 10,000 students.
