That is only conjecture that has bandied about in the film industry for years, and I dont know that there has been any real concrete evidence to support this conjecture...but it truly does make perfect sense. since the leading womans role, in both films, is so similar...a willful strong, southern woman, strives to get her way in life...this is just too much of a coincidence...so I am sure that the conjectures, tho never proven, are quite true...Bette was trying out for the role of Scarlett, and rather than give just a short screen audition, she gave a film length film audition...it just did not pan out for her...

I dont think that anyone can imagine GWTW with any stars, other than what appeared in that film...they all seemed just perfect for their roles...

And I remember seeing Vivian Leigh in a StreetCar Named Desire, with Marlon Brando, Karl Malden, and Kim Hunter, where Leigh now plays a faded and disgraced southern belle, in more modern times...a great performance by her as well, in that movie...

I wonder if playing the role in Jezabel might have hindered her getting the part. It might work against her...a producer might want a star whose “signature” hadn’t been over-used.

It is hard to say...it could be, that in the end it worked against her, but I have read that once Vivian Leigh was given serious consideration for the role of Scarlett, it was hers for the asking...she was in serious contention for the role, with a couple of other actresses, but Bette Davis was never one of them...apparently Davis was never seriously considered for the role...

“All About Eve” had 14 Academy award nominations, and tied “Titanic” for the most nominations ever.

She (Bette) lost to Judy Holliday for “Born Yesterday”, a decent film, but imho not the blockbuster Eve was.

I agree...All About Eve was much better. It stuck to your ribs.

The last time I put a dress on a cat left me with scars. I had to throw the doll dress away, sliced and diced just like me. I hate to think what she would have done to me if I had a veil.
