HAVANA (AFP) - Fidel Castro resigned Tuesday as president and commander in chief of Cuba in a message published in the online version of the official daily Granma.

“I neither will aspire to nor will I accept — I repeat — I neither will aspire to nor will I accept, the position of president of the council of state and commander in chief,” wrote the Cuban leader, who had been in power for almost 50 years.

Ailing Cuban dictator Fidel Castro is taking a keen interest in the U.S. presidential elections. In August, he predicted “an apparently unbeatable ticket could be Hillary for president and Obama as her running mate.” Now, it seems, he is not so certain. What is certain is his hatred for Republican front-runner John McCain.

Castro has devoted the last three in a series of essays that he has been writing since illness forced him to hand power to his younger brother Raul Castro in July last year to an extraordinary attack on Sen. McCain. In the first article, published as usual on the front page of the official Communist Party newspaper Granma, Castro was responding to a statement Sen. McCain made when he was campaigning in Miami. Sen. McCain told Cuban exiles: “There’s a person I want you to help me find when Cuba is free, and that’s that Cuban that came to the prison camps of North Vietnam and tortured and killed my friends. We’ll get him and bring him to justice, too.”

Castro accused him of lying: “His accusations against internationalist Cuban revolutionaries ... are completely unethical.”
