At a time when Chinese products from toys to food face increased scrutiny over safety, a top U.S. regulatory official now says that the Chinese government does not inspect production plants that make drugs solely for export to the U.S. and other markets.
(Excerpt) Read more at chicagotribune.com ...
The US FDA does...any pharma plant in ANY foreign country is subject to FDA inspection. The “home office” of the pharma company is responsible for getting FDA certification or equivalant foreign inspection prior to shipping drugs from that facility. In addition, the US owned company must submit safety data for the foreign made raw drugs and finished drugs to US FDA prior to sale in US...
Let’s just hope they inspect the right plants. LOL
Oh I’m sure they inspect the right plants, the ChiComs have inspectors out examining the poppies, the chrysanthemums, the tulips, all the various mosses and lichen,,,,
China doesnt feel like they have to inspect anything............ simply because anyone managing a plant that makes a mistake is sentenced to jail for a very long time or killed.
So they feel like the threat of death and jail is more effective than inspecting anything.
Good catch. The liberal mainstream media conveniently left that out.
You look at who the liberal media is attacking and then you support the private companies in China. The liberal media just attacks capitalism anywhere and they are always trying to manufacture fake crises to keep the populace alarmed so that they vote for democrat/socialists who will implement more big government agencies like the FDA which don’t work any way as government never worked.
however it’s not because of the Food & Drug Administration that capitalism works, that a private drug company wants to produce a safe ,clean , quality product?
How did capitalism work before the FDA?
People dont understand that a private company wants to produce a safe , clean, quality product so that they can retain customers.
Some government FDA bureaucrat is not bound by the laws to survival of the fittest. A government bureaucrat doesnt have to attract and keep customers as funding for their agency is mandated by law ( money is looted from taxpayers at the point of a gun to pay for this FDA and these bureaucrats huge salaries , benefits and pension plans. A bureaucrat doesnt have to produce a quality product or service or turn a profit. Private FOR PROFIT businessmen and companies do.
Call the “distributor(s)” of drugs you’re taking and find out where they’re made.
Its a communist country. Inspections only occur if the officials in charge don’t receive their kickbacks and bribes in a timely manner.
I don’t why we don’t insist on country of origin labeling on ALL products so that U.S. consumers can make the health decisions that our own government won’t.
There are multitudes of examples of medical companies getting sued into bankruptcy or at least suffering huge losses due to lawsuits.
Medical companies or other companies for that matter don't want to produce dangerous products.
Obviously, the sometimes screw up. The FDA is intended to prevent them from screwing up as often, and in general they do that, though they do fail as well at times, and like all governmental agencies they can often produce layers upon layers of regulations of which only a small portion do any real good.
There is no perfect system. In the case where the FDA inspected one Chinese factory, and thought it was a different factory and approved the wrong factory, it was obviously a shining example of it being a less than perfect system.
The company also failed to do sufficient quality control testing on the products that the Chinese factory produced for them.
There's a lot of blame to go around on this one, but I'm not sure the Chinese government has much of a share in the blame in this particular instance.
The FDA insists that it needs to inspect such factories and they don't make products for sale in China. I don't see why the Chinese government would need to inspect the factories as well. The FDA accepted responsibility for that and failed in that responsibility.
The Chinese manufacturer, the FDA, and the US company all failed in their responsibilities in that case. There's going to be a lot of lawsuits and wealthy lawyers before this is over. My sympathies to those that were harmed and their families.
“Unfortunately the Chinese govt’s lust for money seems to insure that no one gets convicted till the pressure is too great for them to ignore.”
true.
China is a scary place.
There has to be a balance between business and government. Too much regulation drives business to places like....well China, where there is little good oversight.
No regulation and businesses would still be selling radium suppositories.
What’s next the FDA is going to tell Intel how to manufacture 45 nm microprocessors? LOL LOL LOL If you didn't know Intel can manufacture computer circuits so small that billions fit on the width of a human hair. No government agency or government or university is even decades close to doing this? How are they going to monitor that Intel controls it's quality ? Isn't that one supervising supposed to be superior to the one producing?

Drug companies likewise use supercomputers and technology these government idiots never dreamed of or could ever understand if they were ever to actually work. Who in the government really works? Why do they have to as they are in unions and are unaccountable.
China is poisoning us, I’m only hoping more people are outraged. A couple of lawsuits here and there should wake up our corporations and government soon ...

Some regulation is needed, but information can also be a powerful tool. There needs to be regulations preventing companies from making false claims and unsubstantiated claims, and providing penalties for doing so.
If people at these companies knew the medicines they were importing were not safe, then they have criminal liability for their actions and deserve to be tossed in jail.
Regardless of if they knew or not, the should have known reasonably quickly, because they should have been testing for quality and they should have civil liability to match how severe their negligence was.
The civil suits still need to have a cap on punitive damages to something like three times actual damages, or you will drive relatively good companies out of business for honest mistakes, and raise the cost of doing business unreasonably, and everyone will just pay more and the trial lawyers will get richer while everyone else gets poorer.
A little bit of regulation, a lot of information, and a lot of market forces works out far better than a lot of regulation and unlimited lawsuits.
“China is not poisoning me. I feel pretty healthy. And you seem healthy too. Oh , the liberal media says it so it must be true. Where the lawsuits against Walmart then?”
Here in Florida a 10 year old found a piece of metal on his candy. Made where? China of course.
4 people have died because of Chinese made ingredients use in heparin. Since December of last year there are 350+ reports of adverse reaction with that heparin product (only 100 for the whole of 2007 were reported before).
There’s a “CSI Kit” with powder for fingerprints that contains asbestos!
Dozens of toy products were recalled last year due to lead.
Tainted pet food.
94 dead in Panama due to poisoned medicine (containing 99.5 pure glycerin).
This is not the “liberal media” these are contaminated products that are coming out of a country that doesn’t seem to put much value on the quality of the junk they are sending here. Either we regulate the heck out of these products more or we sue some companies into oblivion, it is obvious that there are serious quality problems with these things and ignoring them is not an option.
I think the number of dead in Panama from poisonous cough syrup is up to aroud 300.
Sadly some people are barely human when it comes to making a buck.
20,000 people get killed by car accidents each year. so you want to ban cars or blame car manufacturers because cars aren’t safe?
want to ban guns because murderers kill 30,000 Americans per year.
The fact is that people do die and in a country with 300 million people it’s easy to fake someone getting sick or dying to get in on the lawsuit lottery or to find something wrong with one in a billion products from China or elsewhere.
Fact is that walmart sells hundreds of millions of products per year from China and many other stores too. So where are the thousands of deaths or laws suits against walmart.
Life isn’t perfect and this civilization isn’t perfect either but today in the U.S. we have the best standard of living, best healthcare etc. and best life of any people ever or in other countries.
I’ll continue to shop at walmart not worrying about anything . you continue to live your life in fear clamoring for politicians to grow the government to lead you to safety as the liberal mainstream media wants.

yeah lawyers can manufacture or find one out of a billion "contaminated" products but the liberal media makes it seem like we are all in danger which is a lie because I haven't had a problem nor have i heard of anyone having one. The USA used to have just such a regulation. But for the sake of "free trade" the requiriment of stating the country of orgin was done away with by the Congress at the insistence of the "W" administration. The safety of Americans is only an after thought when it comes to the God of Free Trade.
“Thats all from the liberal media which has no credibility.”
The cough syrup deaths in Panama are not made up at all, in fact a Chinese official was executed because of that one and the screw up with the pet food.
The issue with the blood thinner is not made up either, it’s pretty real.
Face it most products we buy in the U.S are made in China or made from materials made in China. And no thousands or millions of Americans are not dying from that. So the liberal media is making up another fake crises to keep the populace alarmed and to hurt capitalism.
20,000 Americans do die in car crashes every year(life isn’t perfect and everyone dies). Are 20,000 Americans being poisoned by Chinese products? Where are the thousands of lawsuits against Walmart then?
“20,000 Americans do die in car crashes every year”
What does that have to do with anything.
This is the same “argument” liberals bring up to say “so what” to the 3K death in 9/11.
I'm very supportive of your free market arguments. When you buy a product and use it as intended, you demand that it does as advertised. When you buy vitamins and it's really a toxic chemical that sends you on lifetime dialysis, your opinion will change.
