Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams has paid tribute to Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who is retiring on health grounds after 49 years in power.
Mr. Adams met President Castro during a controversial visit to Cuba in 2001.
The West Belfast MP said Tuesday's announcement marked "the end of an era in Cuban and Latin American politics."
"He leaves behind him a country with world class health and education systems and I wish him well in his retirement," he said.
Mr. Adams' 2001 trip to Cuba was criticised at the time by some US politicians, including Republican Congressman Peter King, a long time supporter of Sinn Fein, who described Fidel Castro as a "human rights violator."
While he was in Havana, Mr. Adams unveiled a monument in memory of 10 republican prison hunger-strikers who died in Northern Ireland in 1981......

That's a story that too few people know whenever Northern Ireland has been discussed and is being discussed.
Adams and Castro both said in the aftermath of September 11th, 2001 that "progressive movements" around the world were "setback" by the terrorist attacks.
Ireland ping!
People from all over the world are just dying to get in there.
Useful Idiot Alert.
Where are you Irish Thatcherite???
He’s in a much better place than Cuba!
World Class firing squads.
This guy owned the bar where the Provos planned terror attacks. If he’s on Cuba it should be at Gitmo.
World class ? Why’s everybody leaving ?
Most of the world is in a better place than Cuba!
Good point.
Once again for the helluvit:
Your GRANDFATHER “retires.”
A duly elected official, “resigns.”
Old, murderous, cruel, decrepit despots “step down.”
Ascribe nothing of honor to this despicable dog that should have been, “put down.”
They claim to fight "oppression" their whole lives and then support a system in which a dictator controls a nation for fifty five years and then "retires" by handing it off to his brother.
Love letter from one thug to another.
Why was Gerry Adams ever allowed into our country? Which politicians here feted this terrorist?
Gerry, put down the craic pipe.
I can see the problem with the pic on the left, but what’s wrong with teaching kids about large caliber rifles?
Well, as a gun enthusiast myself: there's nothing wrong with that at all!
Except that instead of simply learning about firearms safety or how to field strip, clean and reassemble a carbine, they are being indoctrinated in communist paramilitary "Defense of the Homeland against the Yanqui invader"-type crap. And "reading" is Dr. Marx, not Dr. Suess. Likewise, "history" and "science".
Well wait a minute.
If as many freepers seem to think the best way to bring back conservatism is to let Hillary! win, then why isn't the best way to instill conservative values in children to expose them to the reality of Marxism? /s
He leaves behind him a country with world class health and education systems and I wish him well in his retirement,” he said.

LOL.....yeah you pub crawler, I ashamed you are Irish.
Considering Gerry’s admiration of the cuban health system, we shouldn’t expect to be seeing him looking for special visas to get care in this country.

[snip] Castro’s son Antonio has revealed that his father will not recover from the illness which caused him to undergo surgery this summer, according to a new biography. The new book Without Fidel, by CBS television correspondent Ann Louise Bardach, reveals that Castro has permanently ceded effective power to his brother Raul - not on the temporary basis that Cuban authorities claim. It confirms that when the dictator disappeared from public view this summer he was undergoing treatment for an illness that is expected to kill him. [end]
