Oakland -- The Oakland City Council on Tuesday delayed a plan pushed by Mayor Ron Dellums to increase the number of police officers on the streets by 70 officers this year.
Dellums, under increasing pressure from residents clamoring for more officers to combat high crime, has pledged to bring Oakland to full police staffing levels by the end of 2008 and has directed Police Chief Wayne Tucker and city personnel officials to reach that goal. The department is now about 70 officers short of its authorized strength of 803 officers.
Tucker presented a plan Tuesday to use $7.7 million to recruit, train and hire an additional 70 officers by year's end.
But the council - after hearing objections from members of a citizens oversight committee and after raising a number of questions about Tucker's recruitment plan themselves - decided the plan needed further study. The council voted 7-to-1 to delay its vote, with Councilwoman Jane Brunner voting against postponing the decision.

Ronald McDonald Dellums.
Some clowns just stick around forever.
Who, in their right mind, would want to be a cop in Oakland?
Holy Cow! Word for word, you beat me to it.
Crime is highest where there are the most cops.....and the least private guns. Is this an EFFECT....or a CAUSE? Less cops, less crime.
So are police recruiters “welcome”?
I don’t think “Less cops=less crime” is a valid argument. Crime levels don’t change based on the amount of law enforcement. There is always going to be a baseline level of crime.....more cops just means there is greater opportunity for more crimes to be discovered and reported.
Saying “Less cops=less crime” is kind of like saying that homosexuals only showed up around the time that AIDs became an epidemic....
Something about great minds.......
Also, no doubt, you've been to this fine jewel of a city.
Big deal! Ain’t that the same part of Cali where the school district refuses to teach children the concept of property rights.
Who needs cops when you can take what you want from the selfish individuals who refuse to share?
“Who, in their right mind, would want to be a cop in Oakland?”
I think I know where you are coming from. However think about what you just said.
In my experience ALL the cops in Oakland are in their right mind.
