China's Olympic food
China has expressed regret that the US has decided not to trust its food during this summer's Olympic Games.
The US delegation has said it is planning to bring its own food for American athletes.
At a news conference in Beijing, a senior official, Kang Yi, said it was a pity that the US had apparently decided not to trust China's food.
Ms Kang insisted that the food served to athletes at the Olympics would exceed international health standards.
For China, a good Olympic Games means cheering spectators, record-breaking performances and athletes and fans all sitting down to enjoy some good Chinese-made food.
But the US is not so sure about the food part, and plans to import its own meat and cook its own meals for its athletes when they get to Beijing.
Ms Kang and her colleagues were asked about the allegation that chickens on sale here are so full of hormones that athletes would test positive for steroids if they were to eat them.
There is no scientific evidence for this, insisted Lu Yong, who runs Beijing's municipal food safety monitoring centre.
C-rats?....
A Very. Good. Plan.
Fixed it for her.
Are they bringing their own mattresses as well?
The IOC should be so proud for selecting a host country with air too foul for athletes to breate and food so unsafe that countries will bring their own. That’s what this PC committee has accomplished. (By the way, I wonder if the IOC members attending will eat the local food.)
Smart,smart,smart
our atheletes need to prepare to compete, not look for a snack an hour after dinner. /sarc
I wonder where folks will go if they decide to step out for Chinese?
Too bad we can’t boycott and hold a counter-Olympics in Taiwan!
Bully for America!
Cute. They bring their own food for safety reasons and we aren’t allowed to know what foods we buy here come from China. I do think this is an insult to a host though. There could probably have been a more tactful way of handling this.
“Try the roast dog, it’s good for you!”
Not PC but right on target.
There is PC and then there is insulting.
"Cooked dog paws at a CXhinese restaurant. A French association of animal lovers on Monday launched a petition aimed at encouraging China to ban, by the Summer Olympics, the killing of dogs for food." (afp.com/toru yamanaka)
MRE’s. Three lies in one.
I got out just before the MRE’s were introduced. I remember C-Rats, fondly............
Maybe this will get China to take a long hard look at it's culinary practices...............
Meals Ready to Eat
They also should be taking their own air.
They need to. They do have problems that could affect all of us. I’m just saying we could have handled this better and continued to work on higher expectations of what we import in. China hasn’t changed. We have just become more aware.
US to take own food to OlympicsSome of which was probably imported from China to begin with.
Given the scrutiny athletes are under, I would be surprised if packing your own food in has not been the standard for the last twenty years. The chances for mischief are just too high.
Oh, and I don’t trust the Chinese as far as I could spit a rat.
Not a bad idea. During my first visit to Beijing in October, 1979, the air was sooty from mostly coal-burning (China has mostly soft coal) power plants. After a day of meetings, the ring on my shirt collar was dark gray. Recently, my cousin informed me that with diesel-powered (not even close to Daimler-Benz Blutec) trucks and buses and thousands more cars (no privately-owned cars in 1979, only copies of 1939 International trucks and “stylish” Russian vehicles) the winter sky looks perpetually foggy.
Hmm, I was in China a better part of two weeks last year for business, some of the best food I ever had. I sure did appreciate a hamburger when I returned though.
San Francisco
So you think that they are insulting the Chinese?
The 1936 Olympics were held in Berlin, and WWII broke out soon after.
Let us hope that history doesn't repeat itself vis-a-vis China and WWIII.
Amen !
China needs us we do not need them or their COmmunism or their nasty food.
It’s just because if they eat the local food they’ll just be hungry again in an hour, meaning valuable training time will be spent at the all you can eat buffet.
I’d say tact went out the window when pesticides showed up in dumplings made in China.
It sure is interesting how so many products out of China are potentially lethal all of the sudden.
And China is surprised by this.
I have a relative who goes to China often on business and he says the food is awful, scary, many times unidentifiable, and downright unhealthy.
Me cook you long time ...
Spaghetti, pound cake and pecan nut rolls were my favorites. Most of it was pretty good, except ham and MFs and the ham and eggs. Still have my P-38 from 32 years ago.
The IOC has recommended that athletes stay outside China until just before their olympic event...bad air and all.
A way to avoid something slipped into the food.
I bet the C-rats, if they are still any around, are still good enough to eat!............
Stupid.
We should not have said ANYTHING about this, just do what is necessary.
There is nothing to gain in embarassing your host in this fashion at the Olympics.
I bet a deep fried poodle that Chinese athletes have ALWAYS brought their own food to every Olympiad. As has every country that has a dietary plan dissimiliar to the host’s country
Deep Fried Poodle?....Here! No MSG!...............
Maybe it’s not about not trusting Chinese food, but the fact that our athletes don’t want to eat Chinese food three times a day for two weeks.
Maybe they want a burrito or some chili. Can you get that in China?
The spicy cheese spread is OK. I can live with the chili-mac and the captain's chicken thingie if I have to (and I've had to) and the Skittles or M&Ms for dessert have never gone wasted.
The rest of it....pretty much blecchh! But it'll do when it's all you've got. ;-)
Maybe they could bring SOS back. Keeps you regular . . . .
I actually liked that stuff!...............
And yet, the IOC has seen fit to give them the highest compliment.
No wonder there, given the political bent of the IOC.
