Barack Obama was born 1961 in Hawaii to a white mother, and a Kenyan muslim african father. His father bailed out after a couple years, returned to Kenya, and went on to have other wives and children. A few years later, his mother remarried to an Indonesian businessman, and they moved to Jakarta. Obama attended a few years of Muslim school as a kid, as well as a few years of Catholic school. He was eventually sent to his Maternal (white) grandmother and family in the States, where he lived and went on to school.
Facts:
1) Obama's mother is 100% white. 2) Obama's father was a Kenyan muslim, not a U.S. Citizen or resident, who left Obama and his mother when Obama was a toddler, and then returned to Kenya Africa. 3) Obama spent the formative years of his youth with his white family.
So, other than being abandoned by a black father, what does Obama have in common with actual U.S. Blacks?
He is genetially half-white. He grew up in a white family. He grew up in affluence. He went to white liberal schools.
He is geneticall half-black, but he did not grow up in a black family, he did not have close black relatives or ties. He did not live in a black community. He did not experience anything remotely close to the life experienced by actual U.S. blacks.
Yet, he is called a "black" candidate? He is apparently whole-heartedly and adoringly embraced by the black community. What is going on?
Are actual US Blacks so desparate for (whatever) that they will accept Obama as a Black candidate?
The weekend before Katrina hit New Orleans, I was there for the first time in my life. I spent several days there. It was eye opening. In my view, the "black" experience in the US varies greatly from region to region, but has some common themes. Obama has not experienced any of them.
Other than genetics from a man he didn't live with, a race he didn't grow up around, and a culture he did not experience, what makes Obama a black candidate?
Doesn’t actually having a dad from Africa make him a lot more African American than most people who claim the title?
Bill Clinton did it.
Well, only genetically. The “African American” (ie Black) experience in the US has very little to do with Africa at all. But, it at least invovles having U.S. black parents/family. Obama had none of that.
insofar as having a dad in America is about impossible for blacks, I'd guess you have a point.
The enemedia. The hype. The swooning groupies. The Marxist politics delivered with smooth speaking skills. What more do you want?
Why... you’re a racist!
/s
Strikes me as Kerryesque in terms of having political ambitions from a young age, and taking steps to make it happen (like marrying a black woman to appear more black).
Can you imagine if his wife was white? How much whiter he appears?
He looks black.
but don’t look back
Well, this is just my opinion, but having traveled around a bit, he looks more Middle Eastern to me.
Well, for one, he’s half black, which is 50% more black than Bill Clinton.
Umm... yeah.
Because of all you state ... is why Michelle is an angry black woman with “Cynthia McKinney Eyes”!
The really important matter is not race at all, but the fact that he’s a “temporarily closeted muslim”. And far more dangerous than even Hillary.
Facts:
1) Obama’s mother is 100% white. 2) Obama’s father was a Kenyan muslim, not a U.S. Citizen or resident,
So is his mother a U.S. Citizen? Barak Hussein must have very little respect for his birth mother otherwise he would likely identify with her and claim to be white. After all in keeping with tradition of black fathers his left him at the age of two.
Obama is as black as Hillary is the most experienced candidate. After all, she lived in the WH for 8 years.
Aren’t we supposed to have moved beyond race in this country, in this modern age?
He’s way too liberal for me, politically speaking. I don’t really care about his ancestry or any of that. And if we’re really a post-racial society, it shouldn’t matter to anyone, should it?
An excellent question indeed. One that I have been asking for many years. I was born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1957, during the height of apartheid. I am caucasian. I am a TRUE African (born there!!) American (by choice!)...yet, cannot claim the right to be African-American because my skin is pinkish.
Why do children of mixed race (white + black) parents always seem to choose the option of being “BLACK” instead of “WHITE”?
Halley Berry any one else??
G
It bugs the heck out of me. He has little in common with the african american experience or the “chicago” thing. He was raised by whites. sheeesh. Real Africans hate being compared to african americans as they have a different heritage, work ethic, etc.
Maybe they are trying to save air and ink time by using less words?
Who cares?
I wish they would focus more on issues.
This is more what they focus on:

The other night he talked about his grand parents working in a aircraft factory during WWII to support the war. I wonder which of his grandparents it was?
If yer half and half(or whatever),you are only allowed to use the trump card if your skin tone is dark.....if this guy was REAL he would come out and say “don’t vote for me cuz I’m black...vote for me because i am an American....” sheesh,I’m over the top here....
lol!
Yeah, I’m all for moving past race. But my problem is with him, the Dems, the media, and black america identifying him as the “black candidate”
Frankly, it’s offensive to real blacks. He grew up in wealth and advantage, in a white family.
Micheal Jackson white, or Betty White white?.. course theres Tony Brown and Julian Bond white too..
He’s black by injection, no? What more would he need?
stable people have, but we aren't acknowledged/accepted....some people still want the controversy
Let it go Hillary......you lost.
You want a President (or candidate) who speaks jive, wears trousers with the crotch around his ankles, listens to [c]rap, and refers to women as ‘hos’?
Yo, bro! Fo’ shizzle mah nizzle!
What I love is how when he’s on the Mainland he talks “black,” but when he’s back here in Hawaii he talks “haole” (white).
That's no Hillary, that's Joe Palooka!
I had a college classmate who was from Africa, and became a U.S. citizen while she was in college. I'd think she'd have as much right as anyone to claim she was "African American", not withstanding that she was 100% White.
Nailed it!
I don't know where she was, nor what her topic was (on computer, back to TV .. until it got "black" ) .. but about a week ago, Fox (I think) ran a little more than a sound bite of Mich raving the shit out of something.
I turned and tried to pay attention, but the clip ended.
What I caught was 1960's black power rhetoric and the angriest face I'd seen on anyone in a long, long time.
I thought, "First lady? ....... nope"
Blacks can probably be divided into 100s if not 1000s of cultures.
Jamacians, Haitians, Cubans, - Africa itself probably has 1000s of tribes. Take for example the Rawandan Tutsis and Hutu.
Then, yes there are Middle Eastern blacks and Egyptian and Ethiopian - I think I’m starting to repeat myself.
My point was that his skin is black and that is usually how people can tell right away.
The big question is what difference does it make and why should anyone care.
Funny, I think other Black people think he’s Black. I think he is too, and I’m White.
Halle Berry did it, as well.
I predict that in 10 years, it will be as racist to call someone black as it is to call them the N-word. Black in the sense in which it was conceived has been so expanded and contorted, it can mean anything and thus means nothing. Kind of like the word "marriage".
It all depends on skin tone. If you look at pictures of Obama’s grandfather he looks just like him but his skin tone is brown. There’s also the stigma of if a person had any black blood they were considered black. Some people if light enough or if their hair was good enough would pass themselves off as “white”. They would leave the south and start a new life up north. About 20 years ago I remember Mario Van Peeples making the comment that it’s the cab driver who determines what color you are. Some biracial celebs who don’t seem to identify themselves as being “black” Derek Jeter, Wentworth Miller, Jennifer Beals, Jaye Davidson, and the Rock. For the most part they are lighter than Barack. You are a true African...lol. So was Theresa Heinz Kerry.
You're an embarrassment.
Hahahahah nice typo.
It makes a difference because people try to predict the future by looking at the past. If you can find out about someones history it puts their current actions into a context.
It does not mean they will perform like this or that. It just puts everything in a context.
With Jesus it was asked. Isn’t he the carpenters son? In other words who does this guy think he is?
We ask the same questions of everyone who tries to set themselves up as a leader.
Where did he come from?
With Jimmy Carter it was a Peanut Farmer.
With Ronald Reagan it was a Cowboy/Actor.
With JFK it was a Catholic
Everyone has certain characteristics that set them apart and define them as unique to the group they are being compared to.
How is a half-white man, who has no parents or family whatsoever that were (a) US Blacks (b) living in the US, who grew up in a white family, in affluence....black?
Its ridiculous.

knarf She does not like you!
You’re ridiculous, and so are you’re ridiculous claims like, “he’s offensive to real Blacks”.
Obama is the ultimate affirmative action candidate. He is the happily ever after to the post modern meta narrative and that is what scares some of the Blacks that claim Barack is not really one of them. What they mean is that a President Obama would be the end product of all their struggles, the benefactor of the years of fighting for black rights without ever having to struggle, himself.
The fact that his ancestors were not slaves has little to do with it, it’s just an excuse. All that really matters is a President Obama would mean that their goals have been achieved, and that victim status would be a thing of the past. Many Blacks just aren’t ready to call it quits, even if their goals are achieved.
