DALLAS -- Security details at Barack Obama's rally Wednesday stopped screening people for weapons at the front gates more than an hour before the Democratic presidential candidate took the stage at Reunion Arena.
The order to put down the metal detectors and stop checking purses and laptop bags came as a surprise to several Dallas police officers who said they believed it was a lapse in security.
Dallas Deputy Police Chief T.W. Lawrence, head of the Police Department's homeland security and special operations divisions, said the order -- apparently made by the U.S. Secret Service -- was meant to speed up the long lines outside and fill the arena's vacant seats before Obama came on.
"Sure," said Lawrence, when asked if he was concerned by the great number of people who had gotten into the building without being checked. But, he added, the turnout of more than 17,000 people seemed to be a "friendly crowd."
The Secret Service did not return a call from the Star-Telegram seeking comment.
Doors opened to the public at 10 a.m., and for the first hour security officers scanned each person who came in and checked their belongings in a process that kept movement of the long lines at a crawl. Then, about 11 a.m., an order came down to allow the people in without being checked.
Several Dallas police officers said it worried them that the arena was packed with people who got in without even a cursory inspection.
They spoke on condition of anonymity because, they said, the order was made by federal officials who were in charge of security at the event.
"How can you not be concerned in this day and age," said one policeman.

the US Secret Service would only give that order at the direction of the candidate himself and after they lodged the appropriate objections. Obama himself, not a campaign flunkie or manager, would have had to order his detail to stop the screening.
Apparently, if it takes too long to get people in they tend to faint....

Isn’t THAT the truth.
I was in sixth grade the year Robert Kennedy was shot. We had class projects coinciding with the ‘68 election, so I remember that one pretty well.
Since then, I don’t recall any election year more wild and wooly than this one. (Not counting 2000, but the campaigning itself wasn’t that strange, just how the election turned out.)
They are the only ones who could give such direction. They have primary responsibility for his protection at this point.
Given the phoniness and theatrical staging of the RAT candidates, it wouldn’t suprise me if the Obama crowd has found some dupe to stage a fake assasination (one that fails, of course) attempt in order to fix their messiah as the true heir of JFK, MLK, RFK, etc. Unlike them, however, this messiah would rise again and go on to the White House in triumph against a VRWC.

I hope this is just some bureaucratic snafu, because the alternative explanation is very troubling....
I don’t care who the candidate is, this is not smart. ESPECIALLY given the fact he is black. It would supposedly confirm all of the crazy prejudices the left (and blacks in particular) have against this great nation. There’s too many nuts running around.
The people making these decisions are the ones Obama surrounds himself by. That being said, if the are so flippant on his security along with his supporters. what does that say about how they’ll treat national security of the United States of America?
He’s only 6.25% black, 50% white and 43.75% arab. He married a black woman.
