Cannon: Immigration fix is not the states' job
Salt Lake Tribune ^ | Feb. 21, 2008 | Sheena McFarland

Congressman Chris Cannon said the states shouldn't be dealing with immigration reform. "It's a federal problem," he said Wednesday in a meeting with the editorial board of The Salt Lake Tribune. He said he realizes the federal government needs to find a solution.

Cannon, a six-term Republican, pointed to the December 2006 immigration raids at Swift meat-packing plants, including one in Hyrum, Utah, calling them "inappropriate." Some 150 Latino undocumented workers at the Hyrum plant were arrested and many were deported.

He characterized the move as political. "The Republicans planned it for October so they could say 'Vote for me, I'm tough on immigration.' But then it didn't happen until December, so they ruined people's Christmas," said Cannon.

What also angered him was the fact that before the raid Swift had been fined $200,000 for "asking too many questions of Hispanics" and instead tried to use the federal Basic Employment Verification Pilot Program to attempt to identify undocumented workers.

They were raided anyway, and it cost them $30 million, he said.

Cannon brought up this fact to Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff when Cannon visited the U.S.-Mexico border last summer.

The reply he received from Chertoff? "That program doesn't work," said Cannon, adding he was shocked at the response.

Cannon worries that raiding only certain businesses, and often putting them out of business, will lead to graft.

"Arbitrary, capricious enforcement of a law results inexorably in corruption," he said.

But Cannon also is cautious to implement a program that does work, such as fingerprint identification for any job applicants, because it could infringe on civil liberties.

"Do we want to identify them? Then we would paralyze business," he said.

He worries about "shutting out" the 14 million or so undocumented workers from the economy.

"Do we want to keep them out of Wal-Mart? From buying shoes at the mall? From buying homes?" he asked. "We shouldn't destroy the economy by removing them from the economy."

Cannon was a key supporter of President Bush's failed immigration-reform proposal, which would have established a pathway to citizenship for undocumented workers.

Mr. Cannon: The Federal Government has abandoned the position of controller of our borders and protector of our sovereignty. They have walked away from the job. The several states have no choice but to defend themselves.

Another fat, jowly white guy telling us how we are supposed to accept illegals invading our country.

He must be afraid of losing his maids and butlers.

They probably want to CONVERT them, as many Mexicans in Mexico apparently have been so converted to Mormonism. In other words, Mormons don’t see them as “lawbreakers” but rather as future members of their religion...

Same as many of the catholics, they put them selves above their fellow citizens.

As California slides into a Third World sh*thole, anyone with money and/or moxie is moving out. NV, Utah, and Oregon are the receiving states for the most part. Construction is still doing very well in Utah as the refugees pour in.

Without that 'outside' money, Utah (and southern Oregon) would be like Appalachia.

He got a strong challenge from a unknown who was attacking him on immigration.

Well he's a real nut case then, everyone of the rinos that went to the left on this issue have lost.

“Six term Republican”

Anyone wonder why the Republicans lost in 2006, and will lose even bigger in 2008?

The in-your-face arrogance of Cannon and McCain on immigration is why conservatives who value the law, not the profits, are increasingly out of the Republican elitist fold.

Eventually, they will get the message.

Meanwhile, get ready for some bad times.

Time to fire the Cannon again. Looks like in 2006 we tried to but the shills here (later turned out to be Rudybots) stopped it.

And because of shills like you we have McCain : (

Good luck with Obama as President.

This POS has been in for SIX TERMS!! He’s an embarrassment to the state of Utah, why don’t they throw the bastard out? I’ll tel you. Because not enough Mormons are bothered by the Invasion by Mexico. It’s a cultural thing. They probably want to CONVERT them, as many Mexicans in Mexico apparently have been so converted to Mormonism. In other words, Mormons don’t see them as “lawbreakers” but rather as future members of their religion...

As a "Mormon" (Latter Day Saint) I suspect much of what you say is correct.

Good luck with Obama as President.

If I'm going to get screwed I would rather it was someone that did not claim he was from my side, thank you!

And maybe the republicans will grow a back bone, but they damn sure want if you don't give them the incentive. Voting for a left is voting for a lefty, it doesn't matter what letter he puts in front of his name.

He worries about "shutting out" the 14 million or so undocumented workers from the economy.

What we really need to do is shut them out of the country.

"Do we want to keep them out of Wal-Mart? From buying shoes at the mall? From buying homes?" he asked. "We shouldn't destroy the economy by removing them from the economy."

This is the height of idiocy, since (as a group) illegal aliens cost America far more than they "contribute".

I wish you were wrong :( but you aren't.

In my experience, an enemy masquerading as my friend is much more dangerous than an open and honest enemy.

When amnesty is passed, that won’t matter. New Americans will be able to live in whatever state they choose.

Try Googling.

BTW, we pinged you yesterday to join us in the thread about those kids killed by an illegal alien in Minnesota. I’m shocked you lacked the guts to participate in the discussion (yes, that’s sarcasm).

A tragic event. I hope the perpetrator is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Now, why don’t you go dig up some story of a documented American killing several people, or do you only care about the victims when the perp is undocumented?

This has been explained to you many times, but you’re too dishonest to address the realities of the issue.

The most important reality is this: ILLEGAL ALIENS AREN’T SUPPOSED TO BE HERE. Therefore, any deaths they cause would have been prevented by keeping them out. Any deaths they cause are by definition ABOVE AND BEYOND any deaths that otherwise would occur.

Suppose I’m the principal of a high school. The law in my town forbids anyone from entering school property unless they are a student, staff member, or on authorized business. But as principal, I ignore that law and start allowing people off the street to hang out in the hallways, to eat for free in the cafeteria, to get free treatment from the school nurse, and other such nonsense. I justify it by arguing that they’re “needy” and that, on occasion, they help out a little around the school with repair work (they work cheaper than if I brought in an legitimate contractor).

One day, one of these unauthorized people, hanging out in the hallways illegally, kills your child. Are you saying that I, as principal, who knowingly allowed this person into the school in violation of the law, would have no responsibility for this crime? Would you say, “Golly, gee whiz, my child is dead, but really it could’ve happened anyway. There are cases where kids are killed at school by other kids. I have no reason to be upset with Principal Puroresu for allowing vagrants to hang out in the halls. I mean, after all, they needed meals and health care and some of them painted the bleachers for below minimum wage."

If you would say such a thing, you’d be a damn fool.
