With talk of carrying California for presumptive presidential nominee John McCain — who few of them actually supported in the primary — hard right conservatives won internal party fights at this weekend’s California Republican Party convention in San Francisco. Former state Republican chairman Shawn Steel, an amiable yet flamboyant far right conservative, trounced incumbent Republican National Committeeman Tim Morgan with 60% of the vote. Morgan is more moderate, treasurer of the Republican National Committee, who criticized the party’s hiring of non-citizens for top party posts. It turns out both had been in the country illegally for years.
The convention also adopted a hardline conservative platform.
Meanwhile, the party’s only proven statewide votegetter, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, was on the other side of the country for the National Governors Association meeting. But he was highly unlikely to be at the convention in any event.
McCain himself was very tepidly received when he was the only presidential candidate who bothered to appear at the party’s convention last fall outside Palm Springs. The rightward move of the party, which raises little money, does little for what polls show to be a very uphill struggle to carry California against either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton.
I count three uses of the adjective “hard” to describe conservatives in the first paragraph alone.
To infantile, liberal fascists, anything not just a whisker to the right of their diseased political position, immediately falls into the category of far right extremism.
The author is Bill Bradley? Doesn’t he have to look to his right to see Lenin?
To Nevada?
If the Republicans don’t go “Right”, what’s the use of it being? America does not need two “left” parties.
Headline incomplete - need to add “- Both of Them”
CALIFORNIA REPUBLICANS MOVE RIGHT...until sometime in November.
BOTH Morgan and Steel are illegals? Am I reading this wrong??
Although that’s what it seems to imply, I would doubt that is what the writer actually had in mind. Many people who write and edit for a living should hang their heads in shame at the poor quality of what passes for journalism these days.
I’m just glad to hear we have some conservative Repubicans out there, Free Republic’s servers notwithstanding.
I feel like throwing up. These are the same losers who could not get enough of kissing Schwarzenkennedy’s rear-end. Whenever I receive a mailing from the Republican Party - national, state or local - I tear it up and throw it in the trash.
I believe so.
Morgan criticized the hiring of 2 non-citizens to party posts who “had been in the country illegally for years.”
As far as the CA GOP is concerned; maybe there is still hope.
The CA GOP, ruined the chance of conservatives to elect Tom McClintock to replace Gray Davis for governor in the recall by pursuing and backing Schwarzenegger.
I don't think Steel has much love for the Grovelnator.
California Republicans move.
I just wish they would move on to LA and SF and crush them.
Republicans moving to the right in 2008? Wow, that’ll cause a wrinkle in the time space continuem.
As my favorite Moderate Conservative would say, “It is what it is”
IMHO there is no scuh thing as a far right wing Conservative, you are a Conservative or you are not a Conservative, to be one you must have all three legs of the stool.
Who?
The word usage increased noticably not coincidentally after Bob Dole launched his advertising career.
CALIFORNIA REPUBLICANS
AND CRUSH WHO?
The liberal cities.
Not sure what state you are from Bill, but I can confidently state that there are more Republicans in California than from wherever you are from -- probably several million more.
The convention also adopted a hardline conservative platform.

Hardline would mean it is actively seeking the recall of its own party’s sitting Gub.. if it had any intent of turning things around in this state..
Wow! Ain’t that the truth!!!
Be sure to let the conservatives squish out from between yer toes!
