Mitt Romney is down, but he might not be out.
Romney suspended his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination after a disappointing showing on Super Tuesday, and has endorsed John McCain for the GOP nod.
But Romneys son Josh says its possible his father might rejoin the race as a candidate for vice president or for president if McCains campaign stalls.
Romney hasnt commented publicly about a recent New York Times article that implied McCain had an improper relationship with a female lobbyist.
McCain and the lobbyist have firmly denied the allegation, but subsequent reports have contradicted some of McCains denials, and further disclosures could raise questions about the viability of McCains campaign, Andrew Malcolm reports in the Los Angeles Times.
Because he suspended his campaign rather than terminating it, Romney still controls nearly 300 delegates he won in early primaries and caucuses.
Josh Romney, who campaigned actively for his father, told the Deseret Morning News that he is considering running for the House of Representatives from Utahs 2nd Congressional District.
Asked if Mitt Romney might rejoin the race, Josh said it is unlikely, but possible.
Malcolm notes: Such a move could provide a possible rallying point for conservatives.
RFK didn’t even declare his candidacy until March of 1968.
We could do worse (and are) but we could do a lot better too.
Kinda wish we could call a do-over. Weren’t those great when we were kids?
I saw him in person at Disneyland the day before he was killed, when I was eight years old. Those were very different times.
Right now I would take better than the worse we have currently....
Strange, yes. But also very sad.
LOL! I’m all for a do-over!
I wish Fred would re-consider
Ping!
I would like to see Romney go out and fight for the things he said he has changed in his priorities (families, abortion, etc.) for the next 4 (or 8) years and then run. I would think if he went out and proved where he was, he would be a shoe in al la RR.
This sounds all too much like a setup. I have no doubt that I would prefer Romney, but the level of IF’s.....
This strikes me as a rather poor piece of Urinalism, especially the headline. Are they going to interview Chelsey to find out what Hillay’s plans are?
Unfortunately, the "better" wants government mandated and controlled health care, which is worse than the "worse." The moral is, when you're sitting in a pile of excrement, you shouldn't long to be sitting in a pool of vomit instead. You should probably spend the time reevaluating how you got there in the first place.
I know you’re getting all excited.
Please tell me you haven’t lost your man-crush yet.
I certainly rather have Mitt Romney as our nominee than McCain! Just don’t see how it would happen though unless we have a brokered convention. Then I guess anything is possible.
The Republican establishment is determined to repeat the Dole campaign with the same result. Romney is a no go. Has McCain reached out to conservatives? Has he even said anything noteworthy about anything recently? He’ll spend the next several months falling over himself so as not to offend the “affirmative action” candidate turned self styled messiah.
You have to be a "Super Patriot", a Megalomaniac, Driven by Power, or just plain Nuts to want to be president.
Maybe the office should be abolished along with Congress.
The Founding Fathers worked too hard at our birth and would be dismayed at the weird self absorbed jackasses we now call our "Leaders".
I prefer the "servant" concept.
Um, Romney has endorsed McCain and has already asked his delegates to vote for McCain. He’d do himself no favors to now say “I was just kidding!” He’d look like a fool.
Tell me you didn’t vote for Ross Perot.
Just got through listening to a Hannity segment. Had a Chicago area radio personality on who gave a stirring warm up prior to McCain speaking at an Ohio rally. The speaker called Obama a typical Chicago, Daly machine hack, used his middle name (Hussein) and mentioned his connections to Rizko (sp). McCain promptly apologized to Obama for the tone and content of the introductory speaker and said his campaign would have none of that and be a gentlemanly campaign.
Wrong again, John. How are you going to win if conservatives are prevented from telling the truth about the candidate? Going to rely on the NY Slimes??
Agree, but we need to fix the open primary system that allowed a John McCain to ever get to the top of the ticket in the first place.
The convention, not to mention November is a long way off. John McCain could have a physical or mental breakdown between now and then. There’s still a whole season of baseball to be played.
AT this point, I could actually get excited about a Romney/Thompson ticket -
Governor Nelson Rockefeller did not announce for the GOP nomination until April 30, 1968.
Governor Ronald Reagan announced his candidacy at the start of the GOP Convention in Miami, August 5, 1968.
He should run for the senate and take out the Whale or the Frenchman. Then prove himself as a conservative.
Under those circumstances, I’d vote for him in 2012.
To be sure, he sickens me, but the state of the party leadership is hopeless.
Had a Chicago area radio personality on who gave a stirring warm up prior to McCain speaking at an Ohio rally.
Wrong, it’s a Cleveland area radio personality, Bill Cunningham. Cunningham is a flame thrower. What he was saying to rally the crowds before McCain got there were over the top and not a proper lead-in for a presidential candidate. You don’t start a campaign out by going immediately into the gutter. That is what Cunningham was doing. It wasn’t seemly. McCain, like Ronald Reagan, is too much a gentleman to put up with that. Doesn’t set the right tone to the public at large. McCain has to have wide appeal to make it in the general election. People in general are sick of nastiness. And I don’t even like McCain. But we’re stuck with him.
This is the 3rd time I have seen this particular article and I still don’t understand what it means. Romney can re-join the race all he wants now, it’s over. McCain is the presumptive nominee for all intents and purposes, so wth is Romney Jr. talking about exactly.
How about a Fred/Mitt ticket? Our choices now are yucky poo. It is really hard to get excited over a McCain ticket. He won the nod while Hillary was considered the nominee. Now we have a youthful guy running against a crotchedy old fart.
Currently we are stuck with a candidate not of our chosing, one who revels more in our opponents as opposed to fighting against them. Not my guy....
If McCain dropped out of the race, then Mitt could get away with it. But that would be the ONLY way he’d not come out looking like a fool.
I agree. Do we need a news item to tell us the Romney is unlikely to run, but that is “possible”?
He is from Cincinnati. Anyway forget what he said and realize who it is that he what he said. This Hussein Obaaaama is a progressive socialist hellbent on destroying America. His partner in crime, Wife, makes it a tag team. McCain will not play the cards he has been dealt to expose the muslim. Thankfully someone else is....
By suspending his campaign, under rules that have changed since 1968, he is down to 124 pledged and 57 unpledged if he resumes his campaign. The rest have either become uncommitted by state rule (Michigan) or he never had, they were part of the MSM wildly innacurate counts.
Romney's Valentine to McCain back on Feb. 14:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/02/14/politics/main3831892.shtml
{CBS/AP) Republican campaign dropout Mitt Romney endorsed John McCain for the partys presidential nomination and asked his national convention delegates to swing behind the likely nominee.
As bad as McCain is, and that is bad, Romney's actions as governor are worse. His return would not help. Perhaps if he can find a way to prove his massive conversion is real over the next four years, he might actually catch on with enough people to be significant.
Obviously he wants to get his shot on SNL.
some people have a hard time accepting reality
Mitt would make a good V.P.. I am not so sure McCain will make it through even one term. He doesn’t look at all healthy.
Okay, I've figured out who the Megalomaniac is, and "Driven by Power", and we all know who's "just plain Nuts", but ... I can't identify this hypothetical "Super Patriot" you mentioned.
Can I buy a vowel?
If they are going to dredge through the sewer sludge for a candidate they may try to revive Rooty next!
If they are going to dredge through the sewer sludge for a candidate they may try to revive Rooty next!
Fred and Romney would have been the ticket!
Fred and Romney would have been the ticket!
The power brokers that make up the GOP elite have decided to hang their hats on the RINO.
Mitt, Fred or anyone else will not be permitted to step in this late.
Sorry folks. We’re stuck with McCain.
Maybe next time we won’t sit on our hands waiting for someone (like Fred) to ride in late and save us from ourselves.
I could feel good about Romney/Thompson. It even sounds good.
I agree whole heartedly that we need to change the primary system.
Allowing liberal leaning states to set the standard early only pushes RINO’s to the front.
Perhaps having 2 states considered more conservative vote the same day as the Iowa caucus would help level the field.
We need to do something!
Romney wasn’t my first or second choice. I preferred him to McCain. South of the Mason-Dixon he barely qualifies as an asterisk. What would be his foundation for running again?
“Mitt would make a good V.P.”
I doubt it would happen — personally I think McCain’s far too arrogant to choose someone for V.P. who’s a lot smarter than he is.
