Byrd admitted to Walter Reed hospital
The Hill ^ | 2/26/08 | Manu Raju

Sen. Robert C. Byrd (D-W.Va.), the longest serving senator in American history, has been admitted overnight to Walter Reed hospital after sustaining an injury to his back this week.

The 90-year-old Byrd’s injury is not life threatening, and he was admitted to the hospital for “observation,” according to his spokesman, Jesse Jacobs.

The senator injured his back when he fell down Monday night in his Virginia home, but arrived in the Senate Tuesday and cast votes in the morning during debate over an Indian health measure. But he missed the chamber’s afternoon procedural vote to take up a bill aimed at forcing a change on Iraq war policy.

During the day Tuesday, the senator was advised by Congress’s in-house doctor to go to the hospital for an examination on whether he broke any bones in his back. Jacobs was unsure on the diagnosis after his examination.

“They’re keeping him overnight; I’m assuming against his will.”

A back injury at his age could be a disecting aneurysm. Hope the best for him.

Byrd may be a senile old coot and an ex-klansman, but there are a lot of younger senators who could learn from his work ethic.

Seriously, I wish him well and a speedy recovery even though I'd like to see him retire.

I thought Byrd served in the Continental Army with George Washington.

I’d like to, but I can’t. You’re a better person than I am.

Byrd is way down on the list of my favorite people and close to dead bottom on my list of favorite Senators.

Just because he is old and feeble does not mean he is any less of a despicable cretin.

Naw, he and his contemporary David Crosby founded a rock group named the Byrds. Rock trivia and ancient history.

You know, according to some Freepers, Byrd would be suitable for the GOP presidential nomination since he voted to confirm both Roberts and Alito. He could hardly be any worse than what we’re actually getting...

Thank you for telling the non-PC truth.

The SOB looks like Emperor Palpatine. And acts just as badly.

The old man won’t last much longer. His days were numbered when his wife died. When a person loses a spouse after being married for over 50 years, they don’t last very long. We had a couple here locally the last two weeks who died. He died on Monday and she died the next Monday.

Although Senator Byrd's record is more liberal than I like, he does sometimes vote conservative. Sometimes he even surprises me when he does.

He is far from my favorite Senator but he would be fairly high up in my rating of Democrat Senators.

I would imagine it would be easier to admire him when he hasn’t had any racial legislation to vote about like back in the 60’s.

He got admitted to WRAMC?

They won't admit him at a religious hospital, he keeps trying to light the crosses.
