New Haven (WTNH) _ Three shootings in one night has the mayor of New Haven calling on the state for help. Mayor John DeStefano says the state needs to do more to fight major crime in Connecticut's big cities.
Mayor DeStefano says the three shootings on Monday are part of a culture of lawlessness and youth violence caused by the state not doing enough to help young people stay out of trouble and not doing enough to help prison inmates stay out of trouble once they're released back on the streets.
One incident Monday night involved a 17-year-old with four outstanding warrants on him, and police ended up shooting a 15-year-old who they say reached for a weapon. That 15-year-old was only shot in the foot.
Another man was shot and killed in a second incident when he tried to stop a robbery.
A third shooting involved feuding teenagers in a parking lot, and Mayor John DeStefano says that shoot out put an officer's life in danger.
Mayor DeStefano lashed out at the state at a press conference Tuesday. Surrounded by the guns confiscated Monday, he blamed the state for dumping recently released prison inmates onto New Haven's streets.
He says the state is ignoring all the lessons learned when two parolees were arrested for robbing and killing three people in the Cheshire home invasion last summer
"I certainly don't want to think that New Haven gets treated in this respect because we're an urban center rather than a suburban community in how we confront these issues," the mayor said. "It's time to deal with these issues not just in Cheshire, but in places like New Haven, Hartford and Bridgeport as well."
Gov. Jodi Rell'S office released a statement yesterday outlining spending in her proposed budget designed to deal with those issues. They include:
- $100,000 pilot program in New Haven, Hartford and Bridgeport - $500,000 in urban youth violence prevention funding - $566,000 for Connecticut offender re-entry program - Funding to help former inmates with health needs - New squad to serve warrants for violation of probation.
funny how ya get fleas when ya sleep with dogs, eh?
physician - heal thyself!
I bet his crime fighting solution calls for more government spending..
Unbelievable. The taxpayers of the state apparently must do more to keep kids from engaging in crime? These politicians are insane.
Yes, I was going to say -— isn’t this the city that promised to give out the debit cards to bonafide illegal invaders?
When does the recall petition of the mayor and city council begin?
Welcome to Reality, mayor ...
Now there is a nice encapsulation of the liberal mindset for you. It's the State's fault (presumably for not prying enough money away from selfish, greedy taxpayers).
How about: it's the fault of liberals who have spent the past half century destroying families, neighborhoods and public schools; creating an epidemic of rootless, fatherless kids whose only skills are petty theft and impregnating yet another generation of unwed mothers whose lives are ruined before they turn 20? How about: stop coddling career criminals and releasing them back into society after repeated crimes, while prosecuting law-abiding citizens who try to defend themselves?
fyi

That is the STOO-PIDIST™ thing I've read in ages! 'Mayor' John DeStefano must have the IQ of a stick.
(That guy needs a full time keeper)
The root of the problem....blame someone else.
The 'young people' and their parents are the problem...no-one else.
