WASHINGTON, (AP) -- Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader selected Matt Gonzalez, a former member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, to be his running mate.
Nader, who launched his fourth White House bid last weekend, made the announcement Thursday at a news conference. The Texas-born Gonzalez ran for mayor of San Francisco as a Green Party candidate in 2003 but lost to Democrat Gavin Newsom after a surprisingly close runoff election. Gonzalez, a lawyer, has been largely inactive in city politics since then.
When Nader announced his third-party campaign for the president last Sunday, he criticized the top contenders as being too close to big business. He also dismissed the possibility that his candidacy could tip the November election to Republicans.

Is he LEGAL?

I think Nader is a hoot! Take some votes from the DEMS!!!
This time this SOB could hurt us.
He lunatic ramblings will help Obama-Klinton appear to his right and thus create a FALSE center with Mac on the right.
One good thing going for us is that MSM absolutely HATES Nader. They hate him more than any other politician. They believe he turned Gor’s victory into defeat and gave them 8 years of George Bush.
If they could get over their emotions, they could use him to portray Hobama as centrists. However, I think their hatred of him would get the best out of them.
“Vice President Speedy.........”
Somewhat catchy....
Been waiting for this with bated breath!
since both hellary and oshama are way to the left of ralph, mr nader will be mostly a non-factor this election.
What a hater that Nader is.
Why is he discriminating against Speedy? He is eminently qualified.
Why, he's the fastest mouse in all Mexico!

One hard core communist.
Being Nader’s running mate is sort of similar to being asked to the prom, no?
The less time we spend worrying about Nader and who the Dims will nominate, the better. We need to be more concerned about the ongoing leftward slant of the Republican party, and the fact that we can’t seem to nominate a social conservative, limited government constitutionist republican candidate who can run on the issues that we USED to own - small government, balanced budget, REAL spending cuts, support for the 10th amendment, respect for the second amendment (and rest of BOR), secure borders, American sovereignty. McCain is NOT that candidate.
This entire election cycle is a complete joke...except that I’m not laughing.
Thank goodness. I’ve been up all night waiting for this critical decision to be made.

Looks like Ralphie Boy not only wants to steal the greens from the Dumbocrats, he wants to cut into their Hispanic voters too.
I agree with that for most part.
However, we do have an Evangelical sitting in the White House. He is Social Conservative if not conservative with our money. So its not too long ago when we managed to put a social conservative in White House.
Second, since W himself was either under the influence of “The Architect”, or it was his own idea to spend us into oblivion, and since he is the official leader of the party, GOP lots its way. They got into bribing the public with goodies mode. So he is the one to blame for this debacle.
Third, the failure to nominate a “Conservative” is not due to leftward slant but lack of good Conservative Candidates.
If Romney (former Governor of People’s Republic of Massachusettes) was the best we could manage then the problem is simply not having quality individuals.
Thompson could have satisfied the “Conservative” criteria, and that was the guy I championed for years even before election season. Somehow, this actor, who should know MOST about how to look good on TV and how to appear vibrant, managed to look old and dead tired and never fought hard and snoozed his way till the last debate.
Again, his downfall is not due to “leftward slant” but his own pathetic campaign.
We can go through the whole list, and it would still come down to same thing - we failed to nominate a Conservative because we simply didn’t have a good candidate.
I am not worried about leftward slant.
Mac may sound crazy and lefty at times, but he is learning and learning fast who his real freinds are.
When W was running for the first time, go through FR threads if you can find them. People thought he would give us Souter type judges. He gave us two BEST ones. I have NO DOUBT, so will Mac.
Another benefit of having President McCain is that the area where GOP has LOST ITS WAY, spending and honest Govt. those are Mac’s STRENGTHS.
So he can restore our credibility in that area and we would be just fine.
This seals it for me. I’m going to go clean my car!
Gonzalez makes Che Guevara look like George Will. ;)
Are you serious???
Do you think you could find one single person in this country who's asking himself,
"Let's see now, do I vote for Ralph Nader or John McCain for President?"
(Other than John's mother, that is...)
Yawn. ZZZZ
His Rhetoric if given enough exposure will make Hobama appear Centrist.
One of the key component of our plant to defeat Hobama is to put his Liberalism in proper context. Nader is on their left so his ramblings can create an effect where Hobama appers as a Centrist.
Just like Mike Huckabee helps McCain with Independents and moderates by making him appear as Centrist, Nader, if he gets even a little traction and exposure, can serve the same purpose for Hobama.
Heh.
Wait, doesn’t Nader live in California as well? Does Nader not realize that now he and Gonzalez won’t each be able to receive California’s 55 electoral votes? There goes Nader’s chance at winning the election!
Go, Ralphie!
Nader will get some Hispanic votes. Nader knows what he’s doing. For the dems, Nader is “unsafe at any speed” just like my old Corvair was.
We already had a bunch of examples before he declared.
There were only two candidates in the 2008 field who fit the bill in my mind, and neither of them are in your list.
One of the problems is that we conservatives have become very good at making excuses for supporting big government and fedgov attacks on federalism. Bush never was effective at promoting social conservatism, so I tend to believe that his heart wasn’t really in it. His rubber stamp of FDA approval of over the counter morning after pills, and his support of gun control (eg. Clements brief) are unconscionable.
McCain has been moving steadily leftward in the last several years and I believe that we are dreaming if we expect him to reverse course and support conservative issues and veto liberal legislation across the board. It’s just not going to happen. For example, I don’t have any reason to believe that he will champion the elimination of the Dept of Education, the roll back of unconstitutional federal gun control, a real reduction in income taxes, or a strong dollar monetary policy. And even if he did talk about these issues, he just would not be credible.
There are other candidates out there, including some that didn’t even throw their names in the hat this time around. I’m praying that one of them shows up at a brokered convention, because I won’t vote for McCain under any circumstances.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Excellent choice. That will pull a lot of Hispanic votes from Obamanation! :o)
Maybe,
but watch out for canned tomatoes on the wall, though.
Commies don’t say “smash the state”, they say “power to the state”.
I think you’re confusing anarcho-libertarianism with communism.
Looks like he’s got the Berkeley vote locked up. I’m predicting Nader doesn’t get 50,000 votes in November
Self described Communist.
“Im predicting Nader doesnt get 50,000 votes in November”
Agree
The Left hates Nader more then they hate Bush.
Nice handwriting though. The “A’s” are definately Anarchist font
