Chip Wall can't help but zero in on the little stuff whenever he watches Barack Obama on TV.
It's his old pal Stanley.
For Wall and a few dozen others, Obama on the campaign trail often brings to mind Stanley Ann Dunham, Obama's mother and a strong-willed, unconventional member of the Mercer Island High School graduating class of 1960.
"She was not a standard-issue girl of her times...

the only child was a ... daughter of a father who wanted a boy so badly that he named her Stanley -- after himself.
Stanley Ann Dunham's formative years, spent not on the Great Plains but more than 1,800 miles away on a small island in the Pacific Northwest.
Stanley Dunham died in 1992, and the Obama campaign declined to make Madelyn Dunham, 84, available.
In 1955, the chairman of the Mercer Island school board, John Stenhouse, testified before the House Un-American Activities Subcommittee that he had been a member of the Communist Party.
The marriage failed. Stanley Ann filed for divorce in 1964 and remarried two years later, when her son was 5. The senior Obama finished his work at Harvard and returned to Kenya, where he hoped to realize his big dreams of taking a place in the Kenyan government.
Years later, Abercrombie and another grad school friend looked up their old pal during a trip through Africa.
At that point, the senior Obama was a bitter man, according to the congressman, feeling that he had been denied due opportunities to influence the running of his country. "He was drinking too much; his frustration was apparent," .
To Abercrombie's surprise, Obama never asked about his ex-wife or his son.

She was an anti-American hippie who wanted dark-skinned men (but didn’t stay married to them) and left her parents to raise her son.
No use attacking Obama for that - not in this PC age - but it certainly had an impact on him. And just how often has he thanked his white grandparents for raising him as a teen?
Obama has an unusual background, certainly not of his own making.

This article has several tidbits that I didn't know. Obama is a big time liar. His "deep discussions about race" with his friend never happened and the supposed turning point in his life when he read the Life magazine article about the man bleaching his skin that didn't exist. But it was seared into his memory. I do think it is germane that his mom was a commie pinko lunatic who globe-trotted around and couldn't be bothered to raise her son for 8 years. I don't blame Barak, but his mom was a flake.

I looked at the site on your link where they had a high school year book of Stanley Ann.
She was quite homely and had male facial features. I am not making fun....I have always been homely too.

In “Dreams of My Father” Barry describes Stanley (Sr.) as a man who chased success ever westward but never caught it. From this article he sounds like a classic ADD case who could never stay settled long enough to make a profitable career for himself.
From what I have read Obama Sr. sounds like a straight-up alcoholic whose whose personal egomania, casual attitude towards relationships and personal responsibility and professional failures stem from his disease.
Thanks for the alert on this article. It surely contains a fascinating background study of Barack Obama. I would have to think some, but what strikes me is Barack never knew his father and was raised (at the very least) in a “white” middle class family between the ages 10 and 18. By that I mean he was raised in a middle class family without any connection to blacks or African Americans.
He also did not experience any kind of privation or difficulties. His relationship with his stepfather was brief and his relationship with his grandparents was extensive.
I still don’t know how or when Barack became an African American. I know that sounds silly, but he has no real personal history of the African-American subculture. He now seems to think and talk like a native born African American.
In spite of this note that he has achieved his biological father’s dream—being an important part of the government!
Well, I guess we can ease off on Barry for not trotting out his white family. Grandad Stanley has been gone fifteen years and mother Stanley Ann has been dead for twelve. She was his grandparents only child so there is no passel of aunts, uncles and cousins.
I’ll give him credit for not dragging out his venerable maternal grandmother.
Same can happen for Conservative Christians who had superliberal non religeous parents.
