Citadel Cuts MAL's Core & More - 2/29 - DCRTV gets confirmation: Longtime DC radio talker Chris Core has been let go from Citadel talker WMAL, which has promptly erased him from its 630wmal.com website, including its program schedule (right). We're told that it was "not personal," just "part of a massive cutback country-wide by Citadel." Core has worked at WMAL more than two decades, doing the Bill "Trumbull And Core" afternoon show in the 1980s. And there are rumblings of more cuts at Citadel's three DC stations - WMAL, WRQX, and WJZW - including the latter's entire airstaff (see newsblurb below). Also, DCRTV is also hearing that Citade

DCRTV is also hearing that Citadel is seriously thinking about ditching WMAL’s Fred Grandy and Andy Parks morning show.....
They’ll be replacing them w/ Imus.
You mouth is a jar?
You know how I feel. I hope Chris Plante gets his slot...
Wha?!?!? WTF? Indeed! He’s got to be a money maker for the station since the only real alternative is Larua Ingram on 970.
Chris Core sucked.
Big time!
How do you eat popcorn?
I always yell at my Suburban when it tells me the rear door is a jar.
Stupid car!
Well, if Plante gets his slot then hooray. The problem lies in that if Don Imus replaces G&A, that’s not much of a lead-in to a ‘hypothetical’ Plante show at 9:00 a.m. Imus sucks.
VirginiaRidgerunner is going to be so PISSED!!! He saw this writing on the wall when WMAL PD Paul Duckworth left in December...
Shit. Shit. Shit.
Now why would they get rid of the grandy and andy show that’s the best show on the air including rush limbaugh IMO.
Don’t know, Jack. It’s unreal to me.
Let’s just cross our fingers that Plante doesn’t get the pink slip, too.
DCRTV hears that evening man Chris Plante will be moved into Core's 9 AM time slot.
Yippee!!
Core was named one of three top radio personalities by readers of the Washington Times in their 2002 Readers’ Choice awards and was recently named one of the Top 100 Talk Show Hosts in the country by Talkers Magazine for the 2nd year in a row.
So much for Chris... he’ll land on his feet... somewhere.
OTOH...it's great news for Chris Plante. I know you're excited about that!
Same here. I used to like Chris, but over the last 10 years or so he's really turned liberal (he calls himself a "moderate"). Many times if callers are not in sync with his particular point of view, he cuts them short.
That would DEFINITELY suck. Those two are the only ones who make my morning commute tolerable.
What would happen if Imus replaces Grandy & Andy on 630 WMAL?
Chris must have been blind-sided since he was in a pretty good mood this morning. Andy and Grandy are probably next, so that they can trip and slip Imus into the lineup. I'm not sticking around for it, and will either go over to the Greaseman on WMET 1160 AM, or simply start listening to my classical music CDs again.
Silvie, if you have an inside line (through Chris Plante) to the station's Program Manager, please tell him that WMAL can go to hell. I'm gone for good this time!
Yes, the article was updated and it appears that Plante is moving to mornings... the issue now lies in whether or not Michael Piercey will move with him or not... Michael is the BEST technical director there is and much of Chrissy’s success is very much in part because of Micahel’s bumper music and sound effects.
WE WANT PIERCEY IN THE MORNINGS, TOO!!!
WHAT????? I cannot BELIEVE this! I don’t agree with a lot of what Chris says, but he is a staple on WMAL. WOW!
How do you eat popcorn?
What's even worse is when my door is ajar. Can't get out of the room!
Oh, not Andy and Grandy!
I know how you feel, Ridgey. Let’s just wait and see what happens with Grandy & Andy. It’s not set in stone yet.
At times, yeah, I agree, but he WAS our guy in DC, for over 20 years. Clear Channel doesn’t care anything about local issues. It’s got a high-priced “star” in the decrepit Imus, and needs to make room for him.
They carry Laura Ingraham from 9-12; Rush 12-3; Glen Beck 3-6PM.
They tried to get rid of Chris Core some time ago, but listeners protested so much, they kept him on. Believe me, this was not a surprise.
Chris Core was always against illegal immigration, IIRC, and was intrumental in getting some local support and attention re the problem. Imho, this is a political move on the station’s part. Not a good move.
On the plus side, I love Plante. Unfortunately, I am just pulling into my parking spot at work at 9:00 a.m., and really looked forward to hearing him in the 8:00 hour.
I’ve been listening to Core since he was on the “Trumbull and Core” show. I even got to meet the two of them back in ‘82 when I won a White Water Rafting trip. Bill Trumbull was a terrific guy, he and I hit it off. Chris was kind of off-puttish - too much of a showman. I think once he got married to his very liberal wife, he took a distinct leftward turn in his opinions.
Grandy has become such a lib I could care less...
WOW....The Greaseman is still around??? Unreal.
I though he hightailed it to the Dominican Republic some time ago.He was really good back in those old DC101 days.
I also like the hour when he takes on Klein.
However, did you notice that when Bill Clinton was interviewed by Chris Plante the other day, all the news reports noted the station but not Chris Plante. His name appeared nowhere.
Klein's the one I wish they would get rid of. I can't stand to listen to his whiney voice. Like fingernails on the blackboard.
This evening’s Chris Plante show ought to be VERY interesting!
There is ALWAYS more to the story.

Not even a hint of 'the end'.
Quote: “However, did you notice that when Bill Clinton was interviewed by Chris Plante the other day, all the news reports noted the station but not Chris Plante. His name appeared nowhere.”
Which frightens me because if he’s going to go head-to-head with Laura, well Ingraham will just end up “schellaquing” him at times but Plante is a much better talk show host to pair against Laura than Core was. I’m betting on that.
The other “downside” issue for Plante is that he’s going to have to start covering more local issues (DC, VA, MD) rather than his staple of terrorism and other things he likes to talk about and, since he’s in the studio in the daylight hours and surrounded by management, he might have to ‘tone it down’, which would suck for him.
Nighttime for Plante has been great because he’s been able to get away with a lot.
Let’s hope that doesn’t happen, and the overlords give him some leeway. I never thought about that angle, tho - that a morning show needs to be more “local” in focus. We’ll have to see if he changes his program that way.
I wouldn’t think that Plante would mention anything about this tonight, except perhaps to say that he’s moving to the morning slot (starting on Monday? I’m assuming?)
God, I really, really hope Michael Piercey moves to mornings too... he & Chris have such a great rappore (sp?) — Chris does not seem to have chemistry with Core’s tech guy, Mike McKay in the times that he’s subbed for Core in the past... I’m sure McKay is a lovely guy but, we really need Piercey in this equation...
I don't see why unless you know something we don't. When Michael Graham had the slot before Core he was pretty much just National News focused.
This just goes to show you how ruthless the entertainment business is. Radio hosts get the NFL version of “go meet with the coach, and bring your playbook”.
That would be great if Chris gets the 9 am. I could listen more often.
Hey Silvie!
Sorry to hear this. I hope these cuts don’t affect Chris Plante.
And yes, I am in EEE - TAL - LEE!!!!!
Did Core get on the wrong side of the Clintons when he interviewed Bill?
That reminds me. When we drove through Philly last weekend we listened to a Rock Station that was excellent.
Do you know which I’m thinking of? Maybe around 1200 on the dial?
I’m stuned !
Damn for once I am speechless.
Chris Core didn’t interview Bill Clinton — Chris Plante did.
