Boeing Celebrates Small Diameter Bomb
Boeing Global Strike Systems ^ | Feb. 28, 2008 | Tim Deaton

Posted on 03/01/2008 10:47:49 AM PST by gandalftb

The Boeing Company celebrated a trio of Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) delivery milestones -- the 1,000th SDB I, the 200th BRU-61/A Bomb Rack Unit Carriage System and the first 50 Focused Lethality Munitions (FLM) -- demonstrating a commitment to providing effective solutions to the U.S. military.

The milestones were observed with a ceremony at Boeing's St. Charles, Mo., Weapons Programs facility.

Because of its small size and robust performance, the SDB I weapon system, which includes the four-bomb capacity BRU-61/A carriage system, greatly increases the mission capability of current and future platforms

The all-weather SDB I weapon system is compatible with every U.S. fighter and bomber aircraft.

It has a standoff range of 60 nautical miles.

At 71 inches long, the 250-pound class weapon quadruples the number of weapons each aircraft can carry.

The FLM variant, with its non-fragmenting case, combines ultra-low collateral damage and pinpoint accuracy for precision strikes on selected targets with limited damage outside the blast zone. The weapon incorporates a carbon-fiber composite warhead and an advanced multi-phase blast explosive to eliminate fragmentation. The small blast area makes it possible to defeat targets in sensitive areas while minimizing risk to nearby personnel or structures.

The process has been a very effective approach to rapidly develop the Focused Lethality Munition.

Sniping from 20k feet and a couple of horizons away.

Dang.

What next? Steel darts, precision dropped, from orbiting satellites?

We should provide this to Israel asap — this should prove really useful when attacking jihad scum who love to hang out in the midst of civilians to try to force “collateral damage” — not possible to always avoid such casualties, of course, but this type of bomb should give some added options.

I love that headline. It would be fun for someone to go post it at DU and see what kind of discussion ensues.

And we celebrate 'em too. Specially when they blow'd up real good.

Love the headline...

I read reports from earlier in the war that the Iraqis would park their tanks next to a mosque. Our response was to fit the smart bomb equipment to a concrete practice bomb. A direct hit with just a concrete bomb was enough to damage or destroy the Iraqi tank and it avoided collateral casualties in the mosque.

This is supposedly a standard 500-pound bomb in Fallujah.
It's pretty much focused on one house, but the SDB would
be even more precise. The neighbors would still complain.

Can’t wait to see the next-gen versions of these munitions in another ten years. I just hope the Europeans by then will be willing to sell us their “best stuff.”

“The neighbors would still complain.”

I guess so!

About 15 years ago, a house on the next block from ours had an explosion from a natural gas leak. Shook the walls in our place. Scary moment.

Bing West’s book is the best I’ve read. There are many others. I added a link to Amazon for the book:

The only downside I can see in this is it take God out of the sorting out business.

The SDB is supposed to provide the punch of a 500 lb bomb in a 250 lb package. Good stuff! :-)

The concept for man portable laser weapons has been around since then too. We wont be seeing any of those in the near future.

But now, we’re starting to see some really amazing stuff actually get fielded and put to use.

Heck, stuff like this amazes me.

It’s even getting the type of ammo that was a fantasist pipe dream not very long ago. Hellhound, Draco and Huntir rounds as described on the page... if they even come close to operating as described.

A true democrat at heart, doing what is best for our sovereignty with no politically motivated promotion via "airhead" directive. /s
