Notre Dame honors activist-actor Sheen
2 hours, 30 minutes ago
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Activist-actor Martin Sheen will be honored by the University of Notre Dame with its Laetare Medal for his humanitarian work, the school announced Sunday.
Sheen, who starred as a U.S. president who was a Notre Dame graduate in NBC's "The West Wing," is to receive the medal at the school's May 18 commencement.
Since 1883, the Laetare Medal has been awarded annually to a Catholic "whose genius has ennobled the arts and sciences, illustrated the ideals of the church and enriched the heritage of humanity."
Recipients include President Kennedy, former Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan Jr. and former U.S. House Speaker Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill Jr.
Sheen has used his recognition as an actor to help others, said the university's president, the Rev. John I. Jenkins.
"He has used that celebrity to draw the attention of his fellow citizens to issues that cry out for redress, such as the plight of immigrant workers and homeless people, the waging of unjust war, the killing of the unborn and capital punishment," Jenkins said.
Sheen, 67, describes himself as a Catholic peace activist. He has been arrested for taking part in nonviolent demonstrations against various U.S. military policies, and has donated money and time to such causes as the alleviation of poverty and homelessness, human rights for migrant workers and environmental protection.

and on his progeny too

My Favorite Martin photo...
I liked it where Crighton had him eaten by canibals at the end of State of Fear.
So convincing as the legendary Robert E. Lee, too.
What a guy.
Do the Jesuits run Notre Dame?
Imagine spending $45,000 a year to have your kid indoctrinated by the likes of those who honor Martin Sheen?
No, the Holy Cross Fathers.
No doubt the Laetare Medal will be inscribed with his real name - Ramón Estevez.
Did the play the tape of the “President” on “West Wing” mocking the pro-life, pro-family conservative with a bunch of verses from the Old Testament about dietary laws, flogging children for disobedience, and executing sodomites?
I don’t know whether Martin Sheen is actually pro-abortion—I just know his public activism is untainted by any connection with any pro-life organization or any pro-life politician—and he’s never had a negative word to say, that I know of, for any pro-abortion leftist politician.
Notre Dame is a Catholic institution like North Korea is a democracy.
Martin Sheen is one of those who say "I'm personally opposed to abortion, but...." He has said this in interviews.
Shows exactly how far Notre Dame has fallen, if it considers Martin Sheen to be a "pro-life activist."
I was wondering the same thing. If he is, in fact, against the killing of the unborn, it’s not something I’ve ever been aware of. Of course, that would be offensive to his friends in the entertainment business so he isn’t likely to be quite as outspoken about that. Which would make him a craven hipocrite.
It’s funny. I never remember seeing him marching for pro-life causes, only anti-war marches. I did hear him many years ago on the Tonight Show mention that he was pro-life, but that’s the last time I’ve ever heard him mention it.
Sad and sick.
HOW COULD YOU!!
Don’t you realize that he played BILL CLINTON on TV, the way Liberals WANTED to see him?
The only good that may come from Obama is the destruction of the left’s fantasies about who and what these people really were....
“whose genius”
who’s genius?
He’s a lefty moonbat, but he’s a pro-life lefty moonbat. If I had to pick a lefty moonbat to honor, I’d pick him. Of course, if I had to pick a lefty moonbat to wring out to make a gallon of high-proof, I’d pick him too...
Who will play Obomber?
If it’s true he’s a pro-life lefty moonbat, then I will at least give him some credit for an odd kind of across the board consistency about “no killing anyone.” But I’d like to hear that his pro-life position is not of the Mario Cuomo school.
Huh?
“Imagine spending $45,000 a year to have your kid indoctrinated by the likes of those who honor Martin Sheen?”
I have been a Notre Dame fan my entire life. When I wake up tomorrow morning it will be:
HOOKEM HORNS!!!!
He “played” a president who graduated from ND.
Funny...he’s one of the idiots calling Bush stupid but hasn’t graduated from ANY college.
Or was that Alec Baldwin?
Or BOTH?
Sheen: I cannot make a choice for a women, particularly a black or brown or poor pregnant woman. I would not make a judgment in the case. As a father and a grandfather, I have had experience with children who don't always come when they are planned, and I have experienced the great joy of God's presence in my children, so I'm inclined to be against abortion of any life. But I am equally against the death penalty or war-- anywhere people are sacrificed for some end justifying a means. I don't think abortion is a good idea. I personally am opposed to abortion, but I will not judge anybody else's right in that regard because I am not a woman and I could never face the actual reality of it.
He's not pro-life, he's a typical BS artist. Nat Hentoff I respect, but Sheen's version of the seamless garment has a few holes.
“South Bend, shit. I’m still only in South Bend. Every time I think I’m going to wake up back in the jungle. When I was home after my first humanitarian award, it was worse. I’d wake up and there’d be nothing...”
There are now classes to remove yourself from that spell.
and Chode awards that POS the Useless Eater medal... 1stClass!!!
“I liked it where Crighton had him eaten by canibals at the end of State of Fear.”
LOL! Or when the stupid bastard had his brains blown out by George C. Scott in “Firestarter.”
“Personally opposed but...” is pro-abortion. So Martin Sheen is pro-abortion.
Notre Dame isn’t honoring him because they THINK he’s pro-life. If they thought he was pro-life, they’d never be giving him an award.
Notre Dame is pro-abortion, plain and simple.
man...Notre Dame must have really fallen to the left
what a shame.
I am against defrauding workers of their wages, but I can’t make that choice for any employer.
I am against bank robbery, but I can’t make that choice for any bank robber.
Sheen is pro-abortion. “Pro-choice” and “personally opposed” are not in my vocabulary, because they are meaningless obfuscations.
Q: What are your views on abortion?
Sheen: I cannot make a choice for a women, particularly a black or brown or poor pregnant woman. I would not make a judgment in the case. As a father and a grandfather, I have had experience with children who don't always come when they are planned, and I have experienced the great joy of God's presence in my children, so I'm inclined to be against abortion of any life. But I am equally against the death penalty or war-- anywhere people are sacrificed for some end justifying a means. I don't think abortion is a good idea. I personally am opposed to abortion, but I will not judge anybody else's right in that regard because I am not a woman and I could never face the actual reality of it.
who’s = who is
“whose genius” would be correct.
Because nothing makes a baby more worthless than being born black, brown, or poor.... /sarc
Even more than not deserving of an award, that stance is anti-Catholic. Notre Dame couldn't find anyone else?
“There are now classes to remove yourself from that spell.”
Now a Longhorn Fan.
