Notre Dame honors activist-actor Sheen
2 hours, 30 minutes ago

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Activist-actor Martin Sheen will be honored by the University of Notre Dame with its Laetare Medal for his humanitarian work, the school announced Sunday.

Sheen, who starred as a U.S. president who was a Notre Dame graduate in NBC's "The West Wing," is to receive the medal at the school's May 18 commencement.

Since 1883, the Laetare Medal has been awarded annually to a Catholic "whose genius has ennobled the arts and sciences, illustrated the ideals of the church and enriched the heritage of humanity."

Recipients include President Kennedy, former Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan Jr. and former U.S. House Speaker Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill Jr.

Sheen has used his recognition as an actor to help others, said the university's president, the Rev. John I. Jenkins.

"He has used that celebrity to draw the attention of his fellow citizens to issues that cry out for redress, such as the plight of immigrant workers and homeless people, the waging of unjust war, the killing of the unborn and capital punishment," Jenkins said.

Sheen, 67, describes himself as a Catholic peace activist. He has been arrested for taking part in nonviolent demonstrations against various U.S. military policies, and has donated money and time to such causes as the alleviation of poverty and homelessness, human rights for migrant workers and environmental protection.

If it’s true he’s a pro-life lefty moonbat, then I will at least give him some credit for an odd kind of across the board consistency about “no killing anyone.” But I’d like to hear that his pro-life position is not of the Mario Cuomo school.

He “played” a president who graduated from ND.

Funny...he’s one of the idiots calling Bush stupid but hasn’t graduated from ANY college.

Or was that Alec Baldwin?

Or BOTH?

Q: What are your views on abortion?

Sheen: I cannot make a choice for a women, particularly a black or brown or poor pregnant woman. I would not make a judgment in the case. As a father and a grandfather, I have had experience with children who don't always come when they are planned, and I have experienced the great joy of God's presence in my children, so I'm inclined to be against abortion of any life. But I am equally against the death penalty or war-- anywhere people are sacrificed for some end justifying a means. I don't think abortion is a good idea. I personally am opposed to abortion, but I will not judge anybody else's right in that regard because I am not a woman and I could never face the actual reality of it.

He's not pro-life, he's a typical BS artist. Nat Hentoff I respect, but Sheen's version of the seamless garment has a few holes.

“South Bend, shit. I’m still only in South Bend. Every time I think I’m going to wake up back in the jungle. When I was home after my first humanitarian award, it was worse. I’d wake up and there’d be nothing...”

“Personally opposed but...” is pro-abortion. So Martin Sheen is pro-abortion.

Notre Dame isn’t honoring him because they THINK he’s pro-life. If they thought he was pro-life, they’d never be giving him an award.

Notre Dame is pro-abortion, plain and simple.

I am against defrauding workers of their wages, but I can’t make that choice for any employer.

I am against bank robbery, but I can’t make that choice for any bank robber.

Sheen is pro-abortion. “Pro-choice” and “personally opposed” are not in my vocabulary, because they are meaningless obfuscations.

Because nothing makes a baby more worthless than being born black, brown, or poor.... /sarc

Even more than not deserving of an award, that stance is anti-Catholic. Notre Dame couldn't find anyone else?
