Editorial: Playing With Fire

The statement by Germany’s Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble that European newspapers should reprint the controversial Danish cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a show of support for press freedom is astounding.

It is difficult to believe that a supposedly responsible and politically astute politician could say something so irresponsible and dangerous — and Schaeuble is supposedly both. More to the point, Schaeuble knows perfectly well that there are hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwide to whom the cartoons are not merely deeply offensive but an outrage. He also knows perfectly well what happened when the cartoons were first published — the wave of violent protest worldwide two years ago that resulted in dozens of people killed in riots and Danish embassies destroyed. The decision by Danish papers to reprint the most offensive of the cartoons has already led to Egypt protesting to Denmark, Iranian MPs demanding action against the country, mass demonstrations in Sudan and riots by outraged Muslims in Denmark itself.

Schaeuble cannot, therefore, claim that he did not realize the consequences of what he said or that he has been naive. This is no mere mistake or case of insensitivity. He knows the massive damage to Germany that can result from what he said — boycotts of German products, mass protests across the world, German diplomats in danger, embassies under attack — yet still he said it. He is being deliberately provocative.

His ministry certainly understands the potential dangers. It has embarked on a damage limitation exercise, claiming his comments have been misinterpreted. They have not. The plain fact is that he said “all European newspapers should print these cartoons, with the explanation ‘We find them abysmal, too, but the exercise of press freedom is no reason to use violence’.”

The argument does not convince, especially coming from the interior minister of a country that consciously restricts press freedom. No German paper is allowed to question the Holocaust.

And, what if freedom of the press stirs up violence? People should not have responded with violence to the cartoons — but that they did, and will almost certainly do again if they are reprinted. That is the fact of the matter and Schaeuble knows it.

He should have kept his mouth shut, regardless of what he thinks about press freedom. In saying what he did and because he is the interior minister, his call to reprint is inevitably seen as Germany’s view. It is not for us to demand his resignation but it is impossible to believe that Germans will not do so. He has been grossly irresponsible. He is playing with fire. He has created a crisis for his country where there was none beforehand. He has sown division between Germany’s Muslims and non-Muslims and stirred up the potential for discord and disorder. That is hardly what is expected of a government minister whose remit is law and order.

The Muslims at Arab News threaten Germany.

He should have kept his mouth shut, regardless of what he thinks about press freedom.

How can anyone live with themselves after realizing they've said something like this out loud? Isn't it a sign? An obvious sign things must end? Like a drunk after spending the money for his daughter's prom dress on booze, a realization visits, things become clear.

+++++++++++++++
Sorry, I don’t agree. If it’s dangerous for one to enjoy the liberty and freedom in the west, so be it. It’s high time the west challenge these 7th century nuts and support each other who share western values. Until the 7th century nuts understand that the West isn’t going to buckle under every time they’re upset we’ll just have more and more of this nonsense they want us to believe is our doing. We have freedom of speech and thought...PERIOD. If they can’t handle that then that’s their problem, not ours. It should be them who accommodate and tolerate, not just us.

It’s outrageous that so many in the west are so willing to set these freedoms aside to satisfy the irrational and intolerant demands of those whose goal is the total destruction of the west and our way of life, our ideals, our culture and all that we stand for. Did we learn nothing from history?

Mohammedans need to grow up. I’ve never seen such a group of mindless and immature miscreants as they are. No wonder they’re stuck back in the 7th Century, and have never invented or created or developed anything that was of beneficial use to mankind (and everything they say they did was in fact stolen from their intellectual betters, whom they invaded and enslaved).

Yeah, yeah. Mr./Mrs. Ayrab is promoting violence while denying it. He/she should shut up.

I have no problem with anybody publishing cartoons of the warlord Mohammed or any other person, living or dead, real or imagined.

And then there's this:

His complete and total dismissal of the fact that all of the violence is MOSLEM in nature is stunning.

Why am I reminded of 1939?
