Havana, Berkeley sister cities? (Gotta read this!)
The Contra Costa Times ^ | March 2, 2008 | Robert Hallstrom

MY INVISIBLE FRIEND dropped by the other day, fresh from her poetry group in Berkeley. I'm not sure why she doesn't just move over there because she does something in that city nearly every day. On Mondays, she is on campus to protest the war, on Tuesdays, she marches in front of the Marine recruiting office and on Wednesdays, she pickets the largest employer in town because it is the largest employer in town, so it must be corrupt, polluting and unfair to its workers. And on Fridays, she works the phones in some storefront raising funds for obscure left-wing political wannabes who promise a brave new world.

Her poetry group meets in a coffee shop, where over the course of many hours, they suck down dark brew and complain about the current president.

It doesn't matter which president it is. It does matter which coffee they drink, for they take that very seriously. They choose their coffee shop and rarely visit another, although the topic of conversation is pretty much the same in each place. They all complain about the current president.

The countdown is on. They know exactly how many days George Bush has left in office. It's up there on the blackboard, along with the muffin of the day. The patrons sit in their same chairs all day, every day, drink their coffee and complain, and plan their celebration for inauguration day. The worst president in history will soon be history. They cannot wait.

These folks hate Bush because of his Patriot Act and those pesky wiretaps.

This tyranny has taken away all of their freedom. They worry about the concentration camps soon to be filled with hundreds of thousands of Americans, and the sense of big brother always watching them. So except for the newspapers, the radio and TV reporters and commentators, the protests in the streets, the many books and movies produced by the president's opposition, and the coffee shops overflowing with criticism of him, all dissent has been crushed. Until next January, they will be oppressed.

I couldn't help but notice that another world leader is leaving office.

Fidel Castro announced his retirement. It's easy to draw contrast between Castro and Bush. Castro has had good approval ratings, especially in Berkeley. Castro's polls always show slightly above 100 percent approval, and no one in Cuba criticizes him in public. Of course, it helps that his pollsters carry automatic weapons. And Castro has been re-elected many times over the decades with virtually no opposition. Now he will pass on the reins of power to his brother, who certainly will maintain the decades-old tradition of prosperity and freedom the Cuban people have enjoyed.

Hopefully, Raul will maintain the fence Fidel built around his island, so the U.S. population will not shrink further from the mass exodus of Americans escaping to freedom in Cuba.

Meanwhile, my invisible friend hopes our next president will do something about the danger emerging in the East County, where it seems that every school has been given a patriotic name. Don't people realize the harm that will befall our children if we don't stop this attack upon their moral and social development? My invisible friend is trying her best, but she could use some help.

We got clones of hers here in Humboldt County also. These dead beats couldn’t get out of bed in the morning if they didn’t have someone or something to protest...

Hard to make time to tree sit with that schedule.

The petition

We, the undersigned condemn the Berkeley City Council’s treasonous attack on US Marine Recruiters stationed in their city. We ask that Congress cut off funds from any and all municipal entity within the confines of the city of Berkeley, California, until such time as the city council withdraws it’s action.

The City Council has voted to tell the Marines their downtown recruiting station is not welcome and “if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome guests.”

The measure passed last week by a vote of 8-1.

The council also voted to explore enforcing a city anti-discrimination law, focusing on the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

In a separate item, the council voted, also 8-1, to give the Marxist protest group Code Pink a parking space in front of the recruiting office once a week for six months and a free sound permit for protesting once a week.

Heh... I’m a Cali native and spent 50 years there, then left it for Texas. A lot of my friends have too.

It does matter which coffee they drink, for they take that very seriously.

Berkeley was a fine place to live as late as the mid-60s. Pity that it appears to have gone to rack and ruin. Glad to hear that it has maintained its tradition of drinking good coffee.
