Venezuela and Ecuador sent troops to their borders with Colombia on Sunday after their Andean neighbor bombed Colombian rebels inside Ecuador in an attack Caracas said could spark a war.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez also deployed tanks to the frontier, mobilized warplanes and withdrew his diplomats from Bogota in the worst dispute in the unstable region for years.
Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa, a close ally of the leftist, anti-U.S. Chavez, expelled Colombia's ambassador and recalled his own envoy from Bogota in protest over what he said was an intentional violation of his nation's sovereignty.
Colombia responded to Correa by offering its apologies for the troops crossing the frontier, but said the operation on a jungle rebel camp was necessary because its forces came under fire from inside Ecuador.
But Colombia, a U.S. ally, also said it found documents at the camp that linked Correa to the guerrillas.

Hurricane Hugo about to be hit?
Obama said he was against the war in Iraq. Therefore, he must be qualified to deal with this.
I wonder what Sean Penn has to say about this. Maybe he’s advising his bud Hugo on foreign policy.
Naaaah...she'll just blame Bush.
Chavez is insane.

Ecuador is a country that managed to stay relatively peaceful with the Marxist terrorists in Peru on one side of them, & the drug lords in Colombia on the other. It’s too bad to see them descend into third world leftist thuggery along with Chavez.
Why do I have this feeling that the Columbian military could kick both Venezuela and Ecuador’s asses simultaneously with little difficulty?
I hope that is true.
But here is Commie Chavez’ chance for his built up military to expand his dictatorship/power into Columbia.
Will we help Columbia stand against Chavez NOW or will we wait til his power has expanded throughout South America and end up having to fight a much more powerful foe later....or face the Continent to our south becoming the property of our communist enemies (e.g. Putin) with nuclear missiles pointed our way from there.
The commie traitor Dems in Congress have been blocking efforts to help Columbia - economically...and will no doubt howl loudly and clearly against any military help President Bush might suggest we send to Columbia ....should Chavez’ thugs seem to be successfully invading Columbia.
I just wonder why Chavez has acted NOW and not waited until January 2009 when, am sure he believes, he will have his ALLY in the Ameirican Presidency - either Hitlery or Obama.
May President Bush have the strength and courage and act now and lead our troops to squash Chavez’ power move while we can.
Hugo is worried his cut from the drug trade will dry up.
It has been pretty clear Chavez has been itching for a fight.
He needs something to distract his slaves from the economic mess he’s creating. Shortages and hyper inflation... Always the result of a socialist tyrant in action.
Maybe this is an opportunity for us to take charge of the Venezuelan oilfields. We are always accused of “war for oil”, lets live up to it occasionally.
I’m trying to figure out where the 800 lb. gorilla is on this (Brazil).
We won’t do nothing...we’ll let Columbia and Brazil slice and dice hugo the dwarf.
But Colombia, a U.S. ally, also said it found documents at the jungle camp that linked the leftist government of Correa to the Marxist guerrillas -- a charge Ecuador dismissed because the evidence was not presented for public scrutiny.
These documents need to be published and verified. Yet this follow:
Chavez and Correa said Colombian President Alvaro Uribe lied about the attack a few miles (kilometers) inside Ecuador.
Correa said planes bombed rebels from Ecuador's airspace while they slept and helicopters flew troops into the camp.
"This was a massacre ... We will not allow this to go unpunished," he said.
How does Correa know all this coming from an area deep in a jungle so thick that proper borders are not readily recognizable unless he has a pipeline into the rebel camps? How can Correa know so much about this "massacre" unless he is being fed info and/or propaganda from the Marxist Rebels?
Smells to me that Ecuador's Correa has been caught with his hand in the Marxist cocaine jar and his pal Chevez is using the situation for internal politics and to help cover Correa's rear end.
A real war is not likely even as much as I would like to see Chevz get his ears pinned back. However, it seems to me that the Columbian Armed Forces would be in better shape for a war as they have been bloodied in a long conflict with the rebels, while the forces of Columbia and Ecuador are 90% bark and 10% bite.
