Obama: Sermon on Mount Justifies Same-Sex Unions

By Terence P. Jeffrey

CNSNews.com Editor in Chief

March 03, 2008

(CNSNews.com) - Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) told a crowd at Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio, Sunday that he believes the Sermon on the Mount justifies his support for legal recognition of same-sex unions. He also told the crowd that his position in favor of legalized abortion does not make him "less Christian."

"I don't think it [a same-sex union] should be called marriage, but I think that it is a legal right that they should have that is recognized by the state," said Obama. "If people find that controversial then I would just refer them to the Sermon on the Mount, which I think is, in my mind, for my faith, more central than an obscure passage in Romans." (See video here) St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans condemns homosexual acts as unnatural and sinful.

Huh? Christ complains about sexual immorality about a dozen times in the gospels.

it may have been a reference to another famous line: "Do not judge, or you too will be judged."

Oh, leftists LOVE this MISquote. It justifies the very core of their belief system, that no behavior should be judged, even by naturally occuring consequences for that behavior.

Anyone hearing a leftie spout this MISquote should shove THE REST OF THE VERSE down their throats -

Don't judge, or you too will be judged BY THE SAME STANDARD!

Libs don't believe in standards of behavior, it must be why they leave this part off.

I missed it, where is the part of the Sermon on the Mount that says - blessed are the same sex marraiges???
He uses a different Bible than I do. I cant even figure out which part of the Sermon can be twisted and tortured enough to make it pro gay marriage

So Obama knows more about doctrine than the author of that obscure book of Romans? Paul will be surprised to hear this news...of course he knew we would go up against “principalities and powers” so he probably is not that surprised at all.

Mr. Obama confuses me here. What does “I will tell you that I don’t believe in gay marriage,” actually mean if he is a “devout Christian” who believes that gay marriage is justified by Jesus in the sermon on the mount?

Seems rather inconsistent to say the least.

Just a little later on in Matthew Jesus himself defines marriage:

Matthew 19:3 Some Pharisees came to Jesus, testing Him and asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?" 4 And He answered and said, "Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE, 5 and said, `FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH'? 6 "So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate."

Yeah, and before shooting his mouth off about “obscure” passages in Romans, he failed to read the verses prior to that one. Gotta love the irony in that.

“Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.” Romans 1:22

Exactly.

The message of Scripture is that we are to “judge righteous judgment” (John 7:24) and cultivate spiritual discernment (1 Corinthians 2:15). Spiritual maturity demands that we test values and weigh propositions and exercise sensible discretion but we must never do it with a spitefully critical spirit.

I guess the phrase “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is justification enough if you are gay.

If he believes this then he is not a Christian. I would be interested in what his church has to say.

Anyone who calls themselves a Christian that votes for this lunatic ( or Shillary for that matter ) needs an altar call to get right with what they believe.

Let’s weigh what scripture actually says against what Mr. Obama says:

Romans Chapter One

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality,[c] wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving,[d] unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.

an obscure passage in Romans.

The sure mark of a picker-and-chooser. Maybe his bible won't open to that page. Or perhaps he has the "small letter" version, where stuff liberal don't like is written in very small, obscure letters on a grain of rice attached to the page.

There's nothing in the Sermon on the Mount that condones homosexual behavior. Admonishment to love our neighbor is to love him despite his and our sins, not because of them. If we were all sinless, what would be not to love?

It's in the famous "self-esteem" verse where Jesus says that noone should ever feel badly about having sinned against God.

the Sermon on the Mount, which I think is, in my mind, for my faith, more central than an obscure passage in Romans

That would be hilarious (if it weren't so retarded)! In fact, the Sermon on the Mount is infinitely more strident than the Law of Moses. NO ONE CAN LIVE IT. Without God's explanations through His servant Paul, we would be without hope in light of the Sermon on the Mount. Thanks God, Paul explains that it is not I, but Christ, living in me, after I receive the Spirit of Adoption. It is the gifts and the fruits of the Spirit that enable the Life of Christ to manifest themselves in me (and anyone else who is "in Christ", as Paul repeatedly says). So please, anyone who desires to "use" Scripture needs to take it as a whole (lest it be incomprehensible or meaningless). Indeed, you need Scripture to interpret Scripture. It's a beautiful thing. Osama, et al, should try it.

Shows what Obama thinks about the bible. To him, it is obviously not God's word, so he can pick out what he likes and ignore the rest.
