McCainonomics: McCain's Economy Platform: Big Tax Cuts, With Caveats

WASHINGTON -- Imagining how John McCain, the Navy war hero, would play the role of commander in chief has been easy. Imagining how John McCain, the policy maverick, would lead as chief executive of the U.S. economy has been tougher.

In a wide-ranging interview last week, Sen. McCain offered the most-detailed account to date of his thinking on economic issues.

(snip)

Climate Change

Sen. McCain's biggest regulatory effort is likely to come in the field of climate change. Along with independent Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman, who was then a Democrat, Sen. McCain introduced the earliest version of a cap-and-trade system in 2003, and the pair have refined their ideas since. Under their plan, the government sets emissions goals. Companies that can't meet their targets must buy permits to produce carbon dioxide, either from companies that produce less CO2 than they are permitted, or from the government.

The system may require a large regulatory apparatus. In the latest McCain-Lieberman version, the government would auction off carbon-emission permits. According to Harvard economist Robert Stavins, such sales could raise $50 billion to $100 billion a year.

An Energy Department analysis says Sen. McCain's plan raises energy prices so much that it would reduce economic growth.

"I hear this interesting argument that somehow this would cost more money to our economy," says Sen. McCain. But, "I am absolutely convinced that innovation, technology, and using the entrepreneurship of America will come up with technologies which will save money, be a boon to our economy, and clean up our environment." He's unlikely to get much argument on this from his Democratic opponents; Sens. Obama and Clinton co-sponsored Sen. McCain's legislation.

If the USA is going to have a flaming idiot for President, then it just as well be a vigorous young one such as Obama, instead of a dried up old white man. At least the former can give a decent speech.

Yeah and let the liberals with a D after their name take the blame for their idiotic plans.

Barring something utterly unforeseen we have McCain and we have the democrat. There IS NO VIABLE ALTERNATIVE. Sit the election out and we still get McCain or the democrat. Write-in Hunter or Thompson or your father-in-law and we still get McCain or the democrat.

It is quite true that not all Americans deserve this situation. But it is also true that the United States of America has earned it. Which, at the moment, is profoundly depressing.

If I want to “imagine”, I’d rather imagine that the dhimmicrats find a constitutional way to block McKennedy from the presidency (since he was born in Panama), and then we’ll be forced to nominate someone with integrity for the Republican runner. Of course, we could then do the same with Hillary (born on the moon) and Obama (born in the land to hope).

The guy is an idiot. We have to get conservatives into the Congress to stop this utterly retarded concept of the government doling out “energy” credits like they’re the source of our strength.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 12, 2007

Lieberman, McCain Reintroduce Climate Stewardship and Innovation Act

Bill Improvements, Mounting Warming Impacts Attract Co-Sponsors to Bipartisan Measure

WASHINGTON – Senator Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) reintroduced the Climate Stewardship and Innovation Act (S. 280) today with his longstanding ally, Senator John McCain (R-AZ). Co-sponsoring the bill are Senators Barack Obama (D-IL) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME), who had co-sponsored the 2005 version of the bill, and Senators Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) and Susan Collins (R-ME). The most bipartisan of the Senate proposals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across all major sectors of the US economy, the new bill quickly won endorsements from the National Wildlife Federation, Environmental Defense, and the Pew Center on Global Climate Change.

“When former skeptics cite melting habitat as the reason polar bears are now threatened, you know the global warming debate is over,” said Lieberman. “The American people want action now because they understand the alternative is bequeathing a diminished world to our children and grandchildren. Our comprehensive legislation has attracted bipartisan support because it solves the global warming problem without weakening the nation’s economic position or imposing hardship on its citizens. By using the power of the free market to promote the rapid and widespread deployment of advanced technologies, we will strengthen this country’s economic position even as we protect our grandchildren against the threat of a diminished future.”

“We continue to work with the scientific community, industry, economists, environmentalists, the faith-based community, and other stakeholders to ensure that we are fully addressing the serious problem of global warming in a manner that has both economic and environmental integrity,” said McCain. “I am confident that given our will and what’s at stake, America can and must assume its proper leadership role in addressing the preeminent environmental issue of our time, the consequences of which so directly affects our national interests. The costs of inaction are enormous, and the national security concerns related to our inaction cannot be ignored. That is why I will continue working with my colleagues to further improve this legislation to craft and implement a market-based policy that will efficiently combat global warming in a manner that will serve our nation well for many years to come.”

“With each passing year, the consequences of federal inaction on reducing greenhouse gas emissions become more devastating for our children and grandchildren, and the range of solutions grows smaller,” Obama said. “This bill offers a comprehensive solution that relies on American will, ingenuity, and technological expertise to solve one of the greatest problems of our generation, and it deserves consideration by the Senate as soon as possible.”

You know, he's just worthless as a candidate except for a few laughs at his expense. After reading his latest "Global Warming" incentive, I may just focus on "survival techniques" for the next 4 years or so.

The one thing McCain might offer is a conservative Veep. The fool's bound to self destruct at some point and who knows? When the rats turn on him, maybe it'll be an impeachment.

There is only one slim chance for us. We must put honorable men, who care about the interests of the American people, in both houses of congress. Then, just maybe, we can limit the damage the next president will attempt to do. And try to put someone who is fit for the office, in the White House, in 2012

If we cannot do this, the damage done to this country may be severe and irreparable.

I realize I may be whistling in the dark...but, remember Bill Clinton was elected after running on a "middle class tax cut" that he abandoned within a week of inauguration.

I'm definitely not a big McCain guy, but these are trying times for conservative/Republican candidates at all levels.

Maybe the guy is just saying what he has to in order to get elected.

McCain needs to be charged for emitting excess greenhouse gases out of his pie hole. Drill ANWR. Mine oil shale. Build refineries. Break free from mooslim oil sheiks. That ought to be McCain’s economic and energy plan. Instead he’s playing carbon credit bingo with liberals because its “hip and cool” and will bring in the votes.

Depressing, but it is what it is.

It's McCain (depressing) or one of the other two (unthinkable).

What do they call that...a "Hobson's Choice?"

I guess an economist sees that as raising money. Wouldn't most businessmen see that as an unnecessary $50 billion to $100 billion per year expense?

A tax scheme is a tax scheme is a tax scheme.
