Skip to comments.Obama: Sermon on the Mount supports gay civil unions (Obama derides the Bible)
Posted on 03/03/2008 10:21:18 PM PST by No Dems 2004
NELSONVILLE, Ohio (BP)--Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama defended his belief in same-sex civil unions March 2 by referencing Jesus' Sermon on the Mount and then implicitly criticizing those who view Romans as a binding teaching on homosexuality.
Obama made the comments during a question-and-answer session with voters in Nelsonville, Ohio. A local pastor asked Obama how he plans to win the votes of evangelical voters when they disagree with him on moral issues.
"I believe in civil unions that allow a same-sex couple to visit each other in a hospital or transfer property to each other," he said, referring to unions that grant all the legal benefits of marriage, minus the name. "I don't think it should be called marriage, but I think that it is a legal right that they should have that is recognized by the state. If people find that controversial, then I would just refer them to the Sermon on the Mount, which I think is, in my mind, for my faith, more central than an obscure passage in Romans. That's my view. But we can have a respectful disagreement on that."
The Sermon on the Mount is found in Matthew 5-7, the passage in Romans is found in chapter 1, verses 26-32.
But Obama's quote may open him up to further criticism from evangelicals, because it's a common evangelical belief that all of Scripture is inspired by God and equally authoritative -- that is, the words of Jesus in Matthew are just as inspired as the words of Paul in Romans. Although it is often argued by homosexual activists that Jesus said nothing about same-sex relationships, He in fact defined marriage as between one man and one woman in such passages as Mark 10:6-9.

Um, Mr. Obama, maybe you've not read the Bible much but there's nothing 'obscure' about the passage in Romans and it's repeated elsewhere in the Bible, both New Testament and Old. In fact, the author of this 'obscure' passage in Romans, the Apostle Paul, was the author of much of the New Testament. Mr. Obama, you don't deserve the presidency. You're a fake.
CNS NEWS.com: "OBAMA: SERMON MOUNT JUSTIFIES SAME-SEX UNIONS" by Terrence P. Jeffrey (ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) told a crowd at Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio, Sunday that he believes the Sermon on the Mount justifies his support for legal recognition of same-sex unions. He also told the crowd that his position in favor of legalized abortion does not make him "less Christian."") (March 3, 2008)
"Let him who has eyes, see, let him who has ears, hear"!!
Wow, I must be reading a different translation because I have read the sermon on the Mount and do not remember it recognizing homosexual unions.
Which specific legal benefits of marriage is he referring to...paying extra taxes? And if they want to develop a legal document where you can designate any given individual to have visitation rights in the case of hospitalization I don't see any issues with that...but it doesn't require redefining marriage or even creating some other form of legal coupling...a simple legal document should suffice.
Just another lying, scumbag liberal. An empty suit, a phony, a charlatan.
well the good news is that this means he’s not a muslim.
DON’T THINK!! ... just chant!!! Like a mindless cult member:
O-Bama!! O-Bama!! O-Bama!! O-Bama!! O-Bama!! O-Bama!! O-Bama!!
Yup, he’ll have a tough time ‘splainin’ that!
No offense to the baptists, but do we have a mainstream source for these comments before I start e-mailing it to friends?
How can Obama possibly find in these passages from Jesus that He would desire homosexual unions? It is impossible, Obama is a total fraud.
Matt. 5:3. Blessed [are] the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matt. 5:4 Blessed [are] they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Matt. 5:5 Blessed [are] the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Matt. 5:6 Blessed [are] they who hunger and thirst for righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Matt. 5:7 Blessed [are] the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Matt. 5:8 Blessed [are] the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Matt. 5:9 Blessed [are] the peacemakers: for they shall be called children of God.
Matt. 5:10 Blessed [are] they who are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matt. 5:11 Blessed are ye, when [men] shall revile you, and persecute [you], and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
Matt. 5:12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great [is] your reward in heaven: for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Maybe not officially but he thinks the mooselimb prayer call is ‘one of the prettiest sounds on Earth’

Obama: Man of the World
By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF
The conventional wisdom about Barack Obama is that hes smart and charismatic but so inexperienced that we should feel jittery about him in the Oval Office.
But that view is myopic. In some respects, Mr. Obama is far more experienced than other presidential candidates.
His experience as an antipoverty organizer in Chicago, for example, gives him a deep grasp of a crucial 21st-century challenge poverty in America that almost all politicians lack. He says that grass-roots experience helps explain why he favors not only government spending programs, like early childhood education, but also cultural initiatives, like efforts to promote responsible fatherhood.
In foreign policy as well, Mr. Obama would bring to the White House an important experience that most other candidates lack: he has actually lived abroad. He spent four years as a child in Indonesia and attended schools in the Indonesian language, which he still speaks.
I was a little Jakarta street kid, he said in a wide-ranging interview in his office (excerpts are on my blog, www.nytimes.com/ontheground). He once got in trouble for making faces during Koran study classes in his elementary school, but a president is less likely to stereotype Muslims as fanatics and more likely to be aware of their nationalism if he once studied the Koran with them.
Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated (itll give Alabama voters heart attacks), Mr. Obama described the call to prayer as one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.
Moreover, Mr. Obamas own grandfather in Kenya was a Muslim. Mr. Obama never met his grandfather and says he isnt sure if his grandfathers two wives were simultaneous or consecutive, or even if he was Sunni or Shiite. (O.K., maybe Mr. Obama should just give up on Alabama.)
Our biggest mistake since World War II has been a lack of sensitivity to other peoples nationalism, from Vietnam to Iraq. Perhaps as a result of his background, Mr. Obama has been unusually sensitive to such issues and to the need to project respect rather than arrogance. He has consistently shown great instincts.
Mr. Obamas visit to Africa last year hit just the right diplomatic notes. In Kenya, he warmly greeted the president but denounced corruption and went out of his way to visit a bold newspaper that government agents had ransacked. In South Africa, he respectfully but firmly criticized the governments unscientific bungling of the AIDS epidemic. In Chad, he visited Darfur refugees.
My experience growing up in Indonesia or having family in small villages in Africa I think it makes me much more mindful of the importance of issues like personal security or freedom from corruption, he said, adding: Ive witnessed it in much more direct ways than I think the average American has witnessed it.
As a senator, Mr. Obama has not only seized the issue of nuclear proliferation, but also the question of small arms. For a majority of the worlds inhabitants, those AK-47s and R.P.G.s are the weapons of mass destruction.
So how would an Obama administration differ from the Bill Clinton presidency in foreign policy? One way, he said, would be a much greater emphasis on promoting education, health care and development in Africa and other poor regions not just for humanitarian reasons, but also with an eye to national security.
If we cant take what, relative to our military hardware and defense budgets, are a pittance, and put some resources into these areas, we will not be secure, he noted, adding: The Marshall Plan was part of a security strategy; it wasnt simply charity.
Mr. Obama thumps the White House on trade and foreign investments, like the Dubai ports deal but he isnt demagogic in the way that too many Democrats have been. And three years ago, Mr. Obama was quoted in The Chicago Tribune as making hawkish comments about a military strike on Iran, but in the interview he pirouetted and noted that one of the lessons of Iraq is that being trigger-happy ... is a recipe for disaster. Thats a welcome sign of growth.
So, granted, Mr. Obama lacks the extensive experience at top levels of diplomacy of, say, Dick Cheney or ... oh, never mind.
What sets Mr. Obama apart is the way his training has been at the grass-roots rather than in the treetops. And that may be the richest kind of background of all, yielding not just experience, but also wisdom.

cough...my tagline.... :)
The closest I’ve found is this: http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/03/02/obama_throws_away_the_script.html?hpid=topnews
Apparently it’s on a .wav file available here
LOL - didn’t look -— you should have put in the /s tag
it’s too late at night, LOL
My first thought:
The limo - cocaine and a guy..........
Someone said earlier that the guy in the limo failed the polygraph. I haven’t read anything to the contrary.
Anyone have links?
>>>O-Bama!! O-Bama!! O-Bama!!
>>O-Bama!! O-Bama!! O-Bama!! O-Bama!!
So sodomites are “living in sin” because they aren’t married? Who knew?
Um, he's a constitutional scholar and yet doesn't understand the 2nd Amendment either.
an “obscure passage” in the Bible? What else does he consider obscure? The Sixth Commandment, Thou shalt not kill? Guess so, since he supports abortion.
They do not have this problem in Iran. Perhaps Barack Hussein Obama will undergo a fact finding mission in Iran to learn what their solution was to the homosexual question.
The story of Sodom and Gommorah was also “obscure” in Obama’s text.
1- meek imply homosexual imply obama is a homophobic
2- hussein obama is a moron
OK, both maybe true
The good news is is the election is 8 months off and we get to hear more ridiculous quotes everyday.
Yeah but to many moslems it is obscure.
“In addition to the Sermon on the Mount, let us also consider the fact that Chewbacca the Wookie is from the planet Endor...”
You missed the obscure ninth beatitude....”blessed are the gays, for they shall be able to marry and stuff.”
Sermon on men mounting is more like it.
Obama also says he prays to Jesus every night most Christians I know pray to Heavenly Father in the Name of Jesus Christ!
Well, so much for Mr. Obama’s devout Christianity. It didn’t take him long to reveal his true master. The spirit that possesses him is not so obscure as his understanding of scripture.
Hussein Obama thought the sermon had to do with “mounting”..
If Conservatives stay home it will be...”I Barak Hussein Obama, do solemly swear”......Think about it folks....
With his left hand firmly on the Quran....
By distorting and twisting Scripture around in this fashion, Obama shows he is an antichrist, one of many around today. His father the devil, no doubt is proud. Even the devil can quote scripture (and use it out of context).
He twists certain passages to fit his agenda, and derides the others that clearly oppose his agenda, and slashes out against true believers that take the bible in context. That is clearly ungodly, un-Christian behavior. He is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Yup, for 2000 years no one in Christianity divined the Sermon on the Mount to approve of homosexuality and gay marriage, but now we have in our midst a man who provides us with the certainty that it does and that it contradicts St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans. Oh, we are blessed to have such a prophet in our midst!
Sermon on the Brokeback Mount?
That, no doubt, will be posted in the NY Slimes, sometimes tomorrow, if B.O. sweeps all 4 states in today's primaries.
Well, Obama isn't a bible scholar. (Master of the obvious!)
Apparently, Obama thinks he knows what Jesus meant better than did the Apostles Peter, James, John, and Paul.
Maybe he didn’t make it past Genesis 2:24
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
Still some controversy over whether the test was legit or a setup. The second polygraph expert felt there were some problems with the testing. The people that did the test cancelled payment on Sinclair's check and there is legal action pending for breach. I don't know how serious to take this soap opera, but this guy is not going away. Here's a few links covering the ongoing saga if you want to catch up:
