North Korea publicly executes 15 starving refugees fleeing to China in desperate search for food
Last updated at 00:05am on 6th March 2008 North Korea has publicly executed 15 starving people, mostly women, for illegally entering neighbouring China in search of food, an aid group said yesterday.
The 13 women and two men were shot on a bridge in the north-eastern town of Onseong as local residents watched. It was the second mass execution to be reported this week.
The group of 15 were sentenced to death for illegally crossing the border into China or for helping others to do so, to ask for help, in money or food, from relatives living there.

15 starving North Koreans were killed for fleeing to China in a worsening refugee crisis
The report of the shootings, on February 20, came from the South Korean group, Good Friends, which works in the North.
Officials in South Korea's unification ministry, who handle relations with the impoverished communist North, could not confirm the bridge killings.
But Good Friends said residents were appalled by what they saw.
One resident said: "The shooting was too much - all those people did it for their livelihood. They got too harsh punishment. Everyone is anxious about a lack of food."
Good Friends, citing a local official, said the execution was aimed at deterring an expected surge of people illegally crossing the border this spring.
It has become a daily routine for a few residents to disappear and illegally cross the border to visit relatives in China.
"We shot them to send a warning to people," the official said.
Good Friends said unauthorised border crossings are normally punishable with a maximum seven year jail sentence.
North Korea suffers severe food shortages and frontier provinces provide opportunities for residents to get supplies before returning.

Secretive: North Koreans, who worship dead leader Kim Il-Sung, face severe food shortages
Others flee their homeland through China, the refugees often travelling to Southeast Asia hoping to win resettlement in South Korea.
Rights groups estimate tens of thousands of North Koreans are hiding in northeast China.
In another alleged incident of North Korean zero tolerance of anyone suspected of trying to leave the country, a South Korean newspaper yesterday reported North Korea had executed 22 fishermen on their return after straying out of the country's waters by mistake.
Having drifted into South Korean territory, they told officials they had no intention of claiming asylum.
They said they strayed accidentally while fishing for clams and oysters. They were sent back to North Korea where the fishermen were shot dead by agents of North Korea's national security agency.

Did they let them listen to The Star-Spangled Banner before they were killed? More likely, they played excerpts from the New York Philharmonic concert.

SOOOO sad!
KJI is one EVIL mofo.
Ok, I’m oblivious as to how things work in North Korea.
-Does KJI control every aspect of folks’ lives including growing their own food the same way Stalin controlled the peasants in the Ukraine?
-Do they work to grow food only to have it monitored and taken from them or do they not even have seeds to plant?
-Does KJI even allow aid in the form of seeds that can be planted and harvested or does he only accept aid in the form of $$ and Hennessy (I hear he loves expensive cognac)?

I’ve read that when they are caught trying to cross the border, they are pierced with a large hook through the hand or behind the collarbone and tied together with other people like a string of fish and forced to march in a line this way.

Well, that solves two problems.
The North Korean regime won't have to feed those people, and those dead people won't feel hungry anymore.
Fascism deals with problems by getting rid of the people that make the fascism look bad, or that suffer from the problems created by that fascism.

Actually they were going to take them to listen to the NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA in Pyongyang, but then just shot them when they realized the ‘cultural’ exchange with the US had left ttghe country already. I hope the members of the Orchestra are proud of the positive affect their concert had on Kim Jong Il.

A prominent example of the fruit of communism to serve as a reminder for the reality-based community (i.e. those of us who recognize as scientifically and historically established fact that all incarnations of Marxism/Communism lead to a horrid impoverished existence rife with starvation and totalitarian abuses).
Even with such glaring examples of failure as Cuba and North Korea readily available for real-time analysis, we still have complete morons who think Marxism can work. The sole consolation is the glimmer of hope that without these examples, the drift to totalitarianism would be a stampede. That's what I call 'glass half full' in this context.

N Korea doesn’t have fascism. They live under communism. The 2 systems have a different structure. Under communism the state owns everything outright and a small group controls everything. Under fascism, private ownership exists, but the state simply allows owners control over that property, only insofar as they see it benefits state intents and goals.

Fascism ( as per my use of the term):

But, communism requires the implementation of tyrannical rule, hence, the term fascism?

Liberalism is fascism, because it is based on socialism. Hayek pointed out in the Road to Serfdom in ~1944, England's democracy is a fascist. Democracy does not imply Freedom and generally is repugnant to it. That's, because w/o being constrained by the principles of Freedom, democracy is simply a mechanism where a simple majority imposes it's will and raids the wealth of it's citizens for their own benefit. That was recognized by the Founders to a point, which is why they created The Republic. The danger and threat of fascism was not recognized and addressed, other than to say that The Republic could not stand under an immoral and incompetent electorate.

Communism has never existed for any significant amount of time over any significant jurisdiction on the face of the earth, and never will. It is a utopian "dream", or rather nightmare that is impossible given the imperfect nature of humankind.
North Korea is neither communist nor fascist. It is a thugocracy, like the Soviet Union was, like China was (and continues to be), and like Russia is moving toward.
Communism is just a covenient label they use as a sop to the people.
Calling thug-run nations like NK, Cuba, China, etc. "communist" gives them an air of legitimacy that they don't deserve. Are we supposed to somehow respect them for attempting to attain an impossible goal? Are we supposed to look the other way while they forcefully try to cram their circular people into square holes?
NK is run by a mafia-like criminal organization and should be treated accordingly: to the extent that they don't mess with us we don't need to mess with them. When they threaten to mess with us, they we capture, imprison, and/or kill them until they are no longer a threat.
To: TigerLikesRooster
North Korea is the perfect example of a country that is “government by starvation”. Kim Jong “Mentally” Il and his ilk intercept any and all food donations. Food is used as a weapon of compliance on the citizenry of that nation. They want to be fed, they better obey the Dear (in the headlights) Leader.

Yes, he want to make sure food only comes through him, and only through him. People are not allowed to earn their food by private economic activities. That will erode his control over people.
For two years, Kim Jong-il is progressively clamping down any private business activities. It earnestly picked up its pace for last several months. People are not even allowed to buy and sell little things, including grains.
