The letter from a 12-year-old to my good friend Roosvelt [sic] is dated Nov. 6, 1940, one day after FDR won a third term. Saying he is very happy FDR won, he adds: If you like, give me a ten dollars bill green american. The letter, an enlarged copy of which is on display in the National Archives, ends: Good by. Your friend, Fidel Castro.

I always knew I didn’t like FDR.
So it’s FDR’s fault that Castro turned out as he did. If he’d sent the money, Castro would not have ended up hating us. But nooooo... Roosevelt couldn’t even spring for $10 to save the Cuban and American people from Castro’s scourge.
Typical Democrat. Only “compassionate” with other people’s money!
I think this is one of Will’s best columns ever.
Castro was actually very conservative and religious until after he was 18.
Socialists either have their hand out or hand out other peoples money.
ditto
All marxist revolutionaries are the same. They have no idea what to do after they seize power. Lenin was so baffled by the prospect of actually having to run Russia that he had a series of strokes and died soon after taking power. Stalin gave up any real pretense of Marxism and ruled as an absolute Tsar. Castro has spent the last 50 years pretending he's still a guerrilla fighter in the mountains. Chavez is trying to start a war to distract his people, while Mugabe's captives starve in the streets. There has never been a successful Marxist government, just dictatorships calling themselves Marxist to fool the Western useful idiots. Marxism simply does not work, yet the RATS keep forcing it deeper and deeper into our own body politic.
And if only people would have bought Hitler’s paintings back in Vienna.
I have to agree, it’s Will at his best.
And if Castro had just signed with the Giants he’d have ended up as a former second rate middle reliever, running a bar in the Mission district of San Francisco (and cursing Sandy Koufax - thus the Jewish tie in :-).
And if he’d just been a better actor he could have ended up as “El Papa” in bad Mexican Telenovelas.
There are all kinds of twists history could have taken. Unfortunately for the Cuban people they didn’t
