The high anxiety in the Obama circles has thrown the campaign off its game.
Samantha Power, one of Senator Barack Obamas senior foreign policy advisers, had to quit Friday after she lost her cool in an interview with a Scottish newspaper and called Senator Hillary Clinton a monster.
The campaign apologized for the flap. But Mr. Obama himself seems unsure of how to respond to the trash-and-thrash tactics that helped Senator Clinton defeat him in Ohio and Texas this week.
The anger that caused Ms. Power to blurt out the monster comment is widespread inside the Obama camp. But Senator Obama, for a variety of reasons some of them self-imposed is sharply constrained in the way that he can respond to provocations.
And if there is one thing the Clinton crowd knows how to do, its provoke.
On Thursday, Senator Clintons spokesman, Howard Wolfson, likened Senator Obama to Ken Starr, the independent prosecutor who hounded the Clintons in the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Why the Clinton forces would want to inject that poisonous bit of business into the campaign is a mystery.
But there was Mr. Wolfson on Thursday, in response to a call from the Obama campaign for Mrs. Clinton to release her tax returns, asserting: I, for one, do not believe that imitating Ken Starr is the way to win a Democratic primary election for president.
More serious was Senator Clintons assertion that she was qualified to be commander in chief, and that John McCain had also certainly crossed that threshold, but that the jury was still out on Mr. Obama.
In other words, if a choice on national security had to be made today between Senators Obama and McCain, voters according to Mrs. Clintons logic should choose Senator McCain.
That is a low thing for a Democratic presidential candidate to do to a rival...

For the record, Ms. Power is correct.
In the spirit of magnanimity and generosity I will forgive Ms Power for her little mistake if Hussein will tell monster, er, Michelle Obama to resign for calling America mean and for saying she was proud of her country for the first time in her life.
One of the first rules in the Saul Alinsky Playbook is the use of the Big Lie. Ken Starr was nothing more than an appointed Special Prosecutor who did his job. If anything, he erred on the side of caution. Now, his name has become a democrat synonym for a crazed right-wing lunatic out to get the Clinton's.
It is exactly the same technique used by the Kerry campaign, when they complained that he was "Swift-Boated." They've gotten that term to mean "unfair character assassination" instead of what it should mean--"the actions of honorable veterans who proved that a self-aggrandizing coward was lying about his service record."
Of course, this technique was used early-on against Joe McCarthy, who, rightly and accurately, warned of the Red Threat by uncovering the scores of commies and their sympathizers who had infiltrated the highest levels of our government, not to mention Hollywood and the media. "McCarthy" is used by the libs with the same venom used on Karl Rove and Ken Starr--a right-winger who will do anything, legal or illegal, to promote his cause.
The technique is so transparent, it would be laughable if 50 million morons weren't lapping it up.
That is now the Clinton mantra, which is a measure of how grim our politics have become.
How a Democrat liberal could write this and not flush with embarrassment is astonishing. Having convinced everyone that they are a victim of someone or something else, and having flushed personal responsibility down the collective memory hole, lib Dems certainly cannot think this is not the way their politics have been since Carter?
At first I had felt great compassion for this man. Then a thought occurred. I wondered if the terrorist that did this to him was inspired to fight on by the positions and speeches of the leaders of the Democrat party. I wondered if it were not for the Democrat party if this man would have been injured.
The words and actions of the Democrats do have consequences. I wonder how many of our soldiers have been injured and died due to these words? When we trained this soldier to fight we did not tell him nor did we know that he had two enemies, the terrorists and the Democrat party.
I wanted to say a few words to this man but was afraid that he would interpret my compassion as pity. I was at a loss for words.
I left angry, very angry at the Democrat party.
Gee ... we knew she was a monster in 1992. Liberals are so dense.
