ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: While in Casper, Wyo., today Sen. Barack Obama ruled out the possibility being a vice presidential candidate during an interview with CBS' Montana affiliate KTVQ.
Here is a transcript of what he said.
Q: Youve raised $55 million in February and in your speech today you said "I was against the war in 03, 04, 05 -- all the way on through 2010, and you specifically mentioned Hillary Clinton and John McCain. Could you ever see yourself on the same ticket as Senator Clinton?
A: Well, you know, I think its premature. You wont see me as a vice presidential candidate -- you know, Im running for president. We have won twice as many states as Senator Clinton, and have a higher popular vote, and I think we can maintain our delegate count -- but you know, what Im really focused on right now, because all that stuff is premature, is winning this nomination and changing the country. And I think thats what people here are concerned about. How are you going to provide health care to every American? So I spend a lot of time talking about the plan I wanted to put in place that would not only lower costs for those who already have health insurance, but also make sure people who dont have health insurance can get health care as good as the health care I have as a member of Congress. Those are the kinds of issues that really make a difference in peoples lives, and were going to keep on talking about them.
One less thing to worry about...I guess.
Can’t imagine Hillary being satisfied with the VP position either. Should be a fight to the finish.
There wasn’t one “no” in that entire response.
These are words for public consumption.
Truth is, he will gladly take the VP slot when he finds the horse’s head under the sheets.
When Hillary muscles the nomination from him, she will need him to win in November and keep the Obamamaniacs on the Dem plantation.
She will make Obama an offer he can’t refuse.
And Michelle will be SO proud then.
I don’t think he’s stupid enough to accept the VP slot to her majesty. He would be tarred with all her wrongdoing and he has enough wrongdoing of his own to deal with. He will certainly not have her as his VP candidate. That would be a death sentence.
“Secretary of State...”
Oh great, another candy ass State flunky.
They all say that, but as GHWB said, it’s like the last cookie on the plate. Everyone defers, but someone always eats it.
He’s spoken to his wife.
Hooray Barack Obama! GRRRREAT news!
And if the Beast manages to get the super delegates to select her, the fight will become even nastier. Let’s hope that’s what happens.
Why would he want to be the clintons vp? If being vp to hillary when she already has bill running around acting as if he’s the president, is not enough of a reason to decline the vp spot, then all he needs to do is remember the name Al Gore.
I don’t think we will see an Obama/hillary ticket or hillary/obama either, because the people who want to vote for these people will be really irritated if they favorite candidate is relegated to VP and they will not vote for the pres candidate. This would be a losing ticket in my opinion. However, I can’t get excited about them losing when it means McCain will win. Better than the dems? Maybe, but I sure wish a conservative was running.
All that says is he is not going to run for the post of VP. No one has run for the post of VP in over a hundred years. That does not say he would notaccept the VP nomination if Hillary offered it.
He chose the words carefully. He was not asked if he would run for VP. He was asked if he would accept an offer from Hillary to be her VP. He did not annswer the question.
Hillary keeps saying she would like him as a running mate.. not saying if she or Obama would be at the top of the ticket. It is a way to try to force him to say he would not be her running mate. Then if she gets the nomination she can say I offered the VP to obama and he turned it down.
If he says yes, then he is done as a candidate for president. he would be running for the office of VP.
Hillary and her supporters in the media are just trying to put Obama in a box. Obama is trying his best not to let them do it.
Obama may be a nice guy, but his lack of patriotism is now becoming very apparent. I dont want him either as POTUS or VP.
You are correct.
He left the door open for anything.
This is good news, so I guess you will go back to COMMUNITY ORGANIZER
Don’t forget these 2 are progressive liberals/commies and whatever they say or do, never ever trust them. Lying is their birthright!
LMAO!!!!!good one!
RUSH WAS RIGHT! A fight to the finish and the dividing of the democrat party...hehehehehehe
I don’t remember that part of the movie where, “two men enter, one man leaves, then the other guy becomes Vice-President”. Maybe I saw the Australian version.
***”I was against the war in 03, 04, 05***
but he voted to fund the war in Iraq 4 times.
One less thing to worry about...I guess.
How can you tell if a politician is lying?
Their lips are moving!!
Just imagine a campaign where every commercial contains negative quotes from the VP candidate regarding the Presidential candidate, and vice versa. If these two pair up, it would be a very legitimate way to go negative with no dirt on McCain’s hands. They can’t blame him for repeating what their own campaigns said.
Newt is wrong again.
Actually, I don’t blame Hussein NObomba. The way he’s been treated by the Clinton camp, he might as well wait and try again rather than be identified with her disasterous name and administration (if it comes to that).
You know, I think he's catching her disease.
ML/NJ
Actually, I wouldn’t want to see Osambama in any position at all. A waste of taxpayers dollars.
This is what scares me about Barak Hussein Obama; our country is the greatest on earth and isn't in need of any major changes. Obama would destroy America by weakening her militarily and taxing corporations to death to pay for his welfare programs. IMHO, having researched the mission statements of his "church" thoroughly, and having heard his crass pastor railing against whitie, it also appears that Obama's a racist in the true sense, and wants to empower blacks and other 'minorities' more than ever, and make whitie carry the load. The thought of this creepy man with his mystery background becoming President of the United States scares me.
I can’t quite decide whether a combined ticket of those two would be stronger... or weaker. Could be that a combined ticket would lose to McCain by even a greater margin that either one alone with someone new in the VP slot.
The dems are split badly between those two. I think it is fair to guess that many dems currently for Obama are so mainly because they despise Hillary as much as Republicans do. Also many dems will simply not ever vote for Obama.
I think due mainly to the “rock star” effect Obama will be tougher for McCain to beat than Hillary, but nonetheless I think McCain can beat either one in the general.
Simply put, they’re terrible candidates. I think there’s a lot of Democrats that are so far just quietly disappointed and embarrassed that this is the best they can do. Sure, lots of Republicans aren’t happy with McCain either. But I don’t think that split is as bad as the split on the left. McCain still has a chance that he might even get some of those conservatives back— but Hillary’s and Obama’s votes are already pretty settled I think. If there are dems that are still “undecided”... they might not go for either one.
He will certainly not have her as his VP candidate. That would be a death sentence.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I believe that and almost every white person to whom I have broached the subject seems to believe the same. What does it say about this country when we have a woman who is seen this way running for President?
Newt is right. I've been saying this for a year: the country may be ready for a woman president or vice-president, or a black president or vice-president, but the country is NOT ready for a woman and a black as president AND vice-president.
He has to say this, else he allows the Beast to siphon off his votes in return for getting him as VP as a consolation prize.
He doesn’t want the Beast using the consolation prize angle to convince people that she and he are a “two-fer” and there are “no losers” if they vote for her.
If he leaves himself any wiggle room at all, however, don’t count him out as VP. Things change.
I can't see the Angry Woman aka Michelle liking being 2nd in anything. I bet she would be a shrew to live with. Although I am laughing thinking of the angry glares etc she would give the Witch. It might be very interesting to watch. As for me I would be proud if the Obama's went off to Kenya & did their magic over there.
This is not exactly ruling out the VP slot. Especially not in politico-speak.
“You Won’t See Me as a VP Candidate” Yes indeed.
Obama has a 75% chance of winning right now.
By closing off the VP line of thinking, he is closing off one of the ‘compromises’ the Clintons would like to have - double-team with her on top. He wants to be top dog and he wont give her the breathing room to push this idea.
He would be crazy to pick the beast as his VP. Then again, maybe I’ll buy stock in that Food Tasting company I’m hearing about!
It worked for don vito
He feels so strongly about the war, don’t you think he’d want to be Hildy’s Secretary of Defense? Or Secretary of Veterans Affairs?
Sigh.
I haven’t listened to one word Newt has said since I learned he was responsible for earmarks. Besides, if Newt knew what was best for this country why didn’t he run? He doesn’t know squat.
An Obama/Clinton would not win as many Clinton supporters to his side, and would likely alienate many of his supporters who hate Clinton and do not want her anywhere near the White House.
Of course this is all a guessing games, as the dynamics of the race keep changing. We should'nt put our money on any one scenario. It will be far easier to build up McCain than try to guess what will become of the Democratic debacle.
Exactly!
And the supers will use this compromise as a way for them to avoid deciding the ticket.
Obama would not want to be the Beast’s VP.
But he would do it, if it came down to that.
They all do.
I think Obama will ask Al Gore to be his VP, if he’s not forced by the supers to accept the Beast-—or she refuses, which, in the end, would be unlikely.
One less thing to worry about...I guess."
I'm not comforted by his statement. Saying "You won't see me as a VP candidate", to me means that he is saying that he is not "running" for the VP slot. I'm not sure at all that he wouldn't accept the "honor" if asked. However, I'm still pulling for BO to knock Hillary out of the race. I don't think he would have someone with her high negatives as his Veep candidate.
