Obama Says He Will Not Accept VP Spot
LA Times ^ | 3-8-08 | Andrew Malcom

Campaigning in Casper, Wyo., Friday night for the 12 delegates to come out of Saturday's Democratic county caucuses, Sen. Barack Obama refused the notion of becoming the vice presidential candidate on this fall's party ticket. Obama was asked by a television reporter, "Can you ever see yourself on the same ticket as Sen. Clinton?" And the freshman Illinois senator replied: "Well, you know, I think it’s premature. You won’t see me as a vice presidential candidate -- you know, I’m running for president. We have won twice as many states as Senator Clinton, and have a higher popular vote, and I think we can maintain our delegate count." Many Democrats have long thought of Obama-Clinton or Clinton-Obama as a dream ticket, offering both the first serious female candidate and the first serious African American candidate for the nation's top two political offices. Clinton surprisingly broached the idea Wednesday morning after she won the popular vote in Texas and Ohio to regain some momentum after 11 straight ... losses, though she still lags far behind in pledged delegates. She mentioned the possibility of a joint ticket again Friday morning during a campaign appearance in Mississippi. Last night was the first time Obama commented on the idea. It's political protocol when presidential candidates are asked about the vice presidency to twist the question back around to the top office and avoid a direct answer. But Obama's response last night was unusually direct and dismissive. The 46-year-old candidate is expected to do well in Wyoming today, as he has done in virtually every caucus state.

Yeah, well this is the same B. Huseein who swore up and down that he would not ever run for President until after he completed his, still uncompleted, first Senate term.

He is not stupid enough to even entertain having to deal with her and her HINO. Talk about a road to political and/or physical oblivion - That is it.

I don't think he's lying. Why would any sane person want to be Hillary's vice-president? Hillary is an arrogant witch for stating the idea that way.

Maybe SHE would be the one needing a VP spot.

“Well, you know, I think it’s premature. You won’t see me as a vice presidential candidate — you know, I’m running for president. We have won twice as many states as Senator Clinton, and have a higher popular vote, and I think we can maintain our delegate count.”

Parse it carefully. He doesn’t say he won’t accept the vice presidency. He says it’s premature. He says he’s running for president. He says he’s ahead of hillary in the popular vote and number of states. He says he has more delegates than she does and thinks he can maintain that.

He does NOT say he will never accept a VP slot.

I’m not so sure about that. Although, for strategy he has to say he won’t take it.

Also, I wouldn’t put it past Billary to choose someone else if this ploy helps her get the nomination. What Billary says in a campaign has no bearing on what they really will do.

Agreed. He’d take it because the party would press him for it, as a shot at 16 years in power.

However, he is beating her, and polls still show him the stronger candidate. Sen. Clinton will be begging him for the slot.

I don’t think so. It would be a big mistake for him.

Not so sure. I don't think this guy wants to tie his political future to the Clintoons.

Have you read the entire recent New Yorker piece, where Michelle O is quoted as saying, in reference to Bill, that she, “wants to scratch his eyes out”.

I don’t think so. I think Hillary would have a hard time finding anyone who would turn their back on Billary in a dark hallway.

The VP position under Hillary will be the end of anyones political career. He’s smarter than I thought he was.

Sorry McCain. You should have run with Kerry when you had the chance.

(...think it through, folks.)

Cheers!
