Camp what? New campground offers unusual name and unique purpose [Camp Lickalotta]

CASAR — Nancy Leedy and Joanie Beasley are unabashed environmentalists, Christians and lesbians.

But some people give the couple and others like them a hard time about their lifestyle. The couple has been bounced from church to church in the county — told not to attend or to attend only at early, less-attended services — and is at times ostracized by their community, they said.

The solution?

A camp dedicated to creating a friendly environment for all types of people: straight, gay, bi-sexual, lesbian or transgender.

Born from a stretch of nature a short distance across the Cleveland-Rutherford county line, Leedy and Beasley said they hope the camp — opening in mid-May — will be an oasis of tolerance in what they say is an often intolerant Bible belt.

“We’re trying to find a place where gays can go in peace,” said Leedy, a nurse.

“All we want to do is provide a clean, safe environment,” said Beasley who is retired from UNC-Wilmington.

They have named the campground Camp Lickalotta. Why that name?

Leedy said the name was chosen for three reasons. She said the goal of the camp is to: Lickalotta prejudice. Lickalotta pollutants. Lickalotta pessimism.

In an interview with an online community for single lesbians, Leedy said the name “represents who we are … no shame and open arms.”

Sharing facilities with the Golden Valley Campground on N.C. 226 for now, Camp Lickalotta’s goal will be to give back to the community and the environment, Leedy said.

Golden Valley owner Joe Hoyle said his campground would host an opening event, but said the campground is not associated with Camp Lickalotta. He said he was allowing the event to be held at the camp in order to raise money for a separate site.

During its opening weekend May 16-18, a music festival will be held to raise money for cancer patients. Other events are expected to follow.

Beyond being eco-friendly, the couple hopes they can keep out at least one other thing — prejudice.

“We aren’t looking for controversy, but love and laughter,” Leedy said. “We’re not here to hurt anybody. We’re here to live our lives.”

If it's on private property, what's the controversy? On the other hand, if the camp gets public financing, that'd be another story.

I was cringing and squinting harder at each successive syllable anticipating the worst... big sigh of relief.

Their identity is based solely on the way they like to have sex. That is all they are. Nothing else.
And that is pathetic. If everyone had a “Keep your bedroom antics private” mentality, and we didn’t know everyone’s sexual preference, they would just be mere “weird” people.I don’t base my identity on the fact that I like a nice firm ass and a big, real t-ts, do I?

Enough with the gay s—t, already. Gay has jumped the shark . Put that in a tagline or on a bumper sticker and smoke it...

I know, people have not always followed the linear path and have sometimes been ex-communicated only to follow their own way of life. If they want their own commune they can do it. That is the joy of a country that still has a few believers in State’s Rights, and the ability to maintain a do it yourself atmosphere. Even if it is an “intolerant” Bible Belt, it is not like they were raped or killed because of their beliefs.

It is obvious that most religions, Christianity being one(though Cyber Ant may disagree), believe against Homosexuality and abortion. That isn’t a sign of intolerance, but rather a sign of piousness that the believers(remember this is not the United Christian States of America, we just follow the Judeo-Christian traditions of trust, hardwork, and social stability) have. If they don’t like it, move out, nobody is forcing it on them.

I, myself, find it absolutely trendy(where are the Eastern Wicca Prayer Incense tissues?) and wish for a camp to lick the prejudice on 0% Right-Wing Anarchists, Black Conservatives, Minority Conservatives in general by Left-Wingers, Right-Wing artists. It would be called Beyond The Trees, because it showcases the lesser-known elements of our political culture. Where are those kinds of camps?

This will probably seem petty, but I've been complaining about this on FR for years. If someone is going to post a report from somewhere that most of us won't know, could you please at least give us a clue as to the state? Most of the time, even if you click on the link it's not even apparent.

And please dont't reply "It is petty" because it's not. I'm not the first to point it out.

Don’t do topics. Do what used to be “latest posts”. And I certainly didn’t mean to single you out. I live in the smallest county of a northeastern state. When I post an article from the local paper I make sure to point out where it’s from. I can’t tell you how much time I’ve spent over 10 years trying to figure out where the story occurred, and I know I’m not alone because I’ve seen other people comment about the same thing.

"...When I post an article from the local paper I make sure to point out where it’s from...."

I do a lot of accident research. What I find are articles citing, for example, "the crash was Bell County's worst". (Like I'm supposed to know where Bell County is located!)

:-(

I have to "Google" Bell County and sort out what state the source is from.

Because of discrimination in the hiring of staff?

A gay campground in Rutherford County would be about as welcome as a Marine recruiting station in Berkeley - but a lot safer.

Make a choice girls - you can have one or the other.

Does Lickalotta offer government paid AIDS cocktails for the newly infected?

I’m glad to see they’ve been evicted. Good news.

A Camp for gays is another term for unregulated bath house.
Camp Lickalotta wherever it ends up, will be a breeding ground for all sorts of communicable diseases. It will be a place where unsavory types gather and threaten the neighbors children. It will be a place no normal person would want to see into.

“Besides, there is really no such thing as homophobia. It is a false concept created by the gay community to smear the healthy aversion to a unnatural and disgusting deviancy.”

This camp must be located in the general area where a species of lesbian dinosaurs was discovered in the past few years. I remember reading that the scientist who made the discover had named the ill-fated species Lickalottapus

Apparently the people who leased then the land changed their mind and the agreement was non-binding.

The problem is that in order to lick the prejudice, if you are a Lefty you must run around screaming that Robert Byrd is a racist, The KKK are our battleforts against the War In Iraq, and other chestnuts that Leftists love to ignore. You see, they believe that Jewish Conservatives like I, are invisible, and so if devout Lesbian Christians can form a camp based on their “sexual ethnicity” and paradoxical symbolism, than we can make a camp based on what is supposed to be paradoxical for us. (I also believe that another great camp are for those Conservatives who don’t want everybody, and the King, to know about their homosexuality)

In fact how about people who wholeheartedly support the War In Iraq? Where are those kinds of camps?

I think it should be named camp licklotta twatta and a gay mens camp should be beside it named camp beat-a-peta...that about sums up what they are....If they didn’t want to be discriminated against they shouldn’t openly flaunt what they are. Pervs......
