“Helmets for sailors?”

Ain’t gonna happen except during GQ.

We almost lost one - rough seas - guy slipped and hit the back of his head on a hatch knife edge. “Doc” sewed him up on the mess room table amidst the smell of vomit - the guy was out cold - no anesthetic needed. He did puke all over the place tho while we held him as study as we could. circa.1962.

The Jesuits apparently did a poor job of teaching you respect for those who put their lives on the line to protect your freedom.

Best ya don't post anything more like that.

Some liberal pol will grab on to that like glue.....

"Bush does not protect out sailor's while on duty!"

"Bush hate's the Navy....no concern for safety at sea..."

"Bush spent $$ elsewhere why our young men's safety at sea is COMPLETELY ignored!"

See what I mean?

Look me in the eye and say they would not do that....

Reality has absolutely nothing to do with it.

“See what I mean?”

I see what you mean. And and fool with a brain knows there is risk in this world. It is risky business crossing a street. Fishing for crab in the Bering Sea is very risky business.

There are many levels of risk - in the Navy we trained around the consequences - still sh*t happens. The sea is unpredictable.

I spent 20 years in the USAF, fighter maintenance.

I know what I mean.

BTW - I ack your responsibility was profound. An acquaintance of mine flew SR-71s - he had nothing but good to say about his maint. crew.

Bumped his in heavy seas? Boy, that’s freakish.

In 86/87 we lost 2 young sailors aboard TR. One walked into a COD propeller and another was blown off the flight deck on perfectly calm day (we never saw him again).

This also happened aboard TR in 91:

“Almost got hit by a flying desk safe that came loose in heavy seas.”

One night, off the VA Capes, we had a safe sliding back and forth across the deck in CIC. About 6 of us tackled it and tied it down.

That was a rough night. I put boots under the edge of my mattress to keep from rolling out of my rack. Slept well, though.

What department were you in on TR? I was there too (87 to 90). I remember the guy cut in half in the prop, so it had to be ‘87. I think it was an E2C Hawkeye though. A minor detail since they are basically the same plane. Absolutely no difference to the guy killed of course.
