At the Mayflower, Client 9's Sinking Ship
The Washington Post ^ | March 11, 2008 | Dana Milbank

Posted on 03/10/2008 8:44:39 PM PDT by khnyny

The woman accused of running a prostitution ring allegedly patronized by Eliot Spitzer told one of her call girls that the New York governor had been known to "ask you to do things that, like, you might not think were safe."

But whatever Spitzer -- or, in the language of a federal court filing, "Client-9" -- did with a petite brunette nicknamed "Kristen" on the eve of Valentine's Day last month at Washington's Mayflower Hotel, it probably wasn't as monstrous as what he asked his wife to do yesterday.

In the grand tradition of Larry Craig, David Vitter and Jim McGreevey, Spitzer dragged his partner of 21 years before the television cameras at his offices in New York to announce that he was "disappointed" in himself for unspecified sins.

Silda Wall Spitzer looked like a victim of food poisoning as she stood by her man's side. She cast her eyes downward at the 183-word statement while he read it. She raised her glance only briefly, when the governor admitted he had "acted in a way that violates my obligation to my family," when he offered an apology "to the public, whom I promised better," and again when he pledged to "dedicate some time to regain the trust of my family."

The silent Mrs. Spitzer -- Harvard law school graduate, corporate lawyer, nonprofit founder and mother of the governor's three daughters -- then led Client 9 away from the lectern.

Fortunately for Mrs. Spitzer, the ordeal lasted only 67 seconds, and the governor, his forehead shining under the TV lights, took no questions. Unfortunately for Mr. Spitzer, this left unchallenged a rather lurid account of the events of last month at the Mayflower in the federal prosecutors' filing; indeed, Spitzer admitted that he violated "any sense of right and wrong."

Funny paragraph:

Thrice in his brief statement, Spitzer spoke of his affection for his home state: his desire to “bring real change to New York,” to “rebuild New York” and to do “what is best for the state of New York.” Even in scandal, he sought to patronize New York products, working with a New York company to have Kristen exported.

I'm a 50 yr old ex sailor who's seen a lot of the world and this statement scares me!

But, face it folks. He's a) rich and 2) a Dem, so he's got a very good chance of getting away scot-free.

I would have told him:

YOU made this mess now

YOU stand alone and deal with it.

I’ll let you know what I will do about it later.

Into the lions den you go!

The expression on Silda Spitzer’s face was one of extreme sadness. My understanding is that their three daughters were in the audience as well.

Spitzer should resign just for humiliating his wife like that. That was spousal abuse.

But Silda is no slouch—she’s an ex-corporate lawyer. She should have said something as well—like announcing her divorce.

In the age of feminism, I don’t understand how educated women will stand to be treated like doormats. For the sake of her three teenage daughters, she should have provided a more powerful example of a woman taking control and not standing for being betrayed and humiliated in public.

Human dynamics aside, and realizing that Silda may have been still be in a state of shock a la Dana McGreevey was, the image of a crestfallen Silda standing “by her man” spoke a very strong message of who was in control of that relationship.

And it wasn’t her.

Can some female Freepers shed some light on this?

Frankly, I don’t know what’s wrong with some of these guys that they cannot just have sex with their wives. A good portion of the plebs in America are able to do that. Is power that absolute a corrupter that they cannot keep their pants on???

It seems that Spitzer was a “regular” and that this was not just a one time “indiscretion”. That being said, I wonder why it never got out into the press. You know that these hotel employees in New York and DC got an eyeful. Was it a case of the press covering, yet again, for a crooked Dem?

Look at it this way, the paparazzi, National Enquirer, TMZ, etc., have the scoop on whomever they want, anytime they want. The information is out there it seems, except in the case of corrupt Dems and other protected "untouchables".

Oops, Dana, baby. You forgot to add one other name to that list and you had so many to choose from, e.g., Bubba, the Shlickmeister, the Rapist, the Head man, the pornographer in chief, the Head cheese and so on. Please Dana, in your future objective articles please try to be more inclusive since you and your buds at the Washing Compost always seek to be fair.

The left doesn’t care when it is a Dhimmi, but let it be a Republican - then all hell breaks loose.

By all accounts Spitzer was not just an aggressive prosecutor as Attorney General but crossed the line by unnecessarily bringing up scurrilous rumors and calumnies against those being prosecuted that were in no way germane to the case. It’s also known that he tried to investigate political opponents in order to see what dirt he could discover. Even fellow Democrats admit he was an out-of-control and arrogant egomaniac.

There is no law that says that she had to be out there with him. Krauthammer calls it being a "prop". She deserved better and she should have taken the initiative and performed better by NOT standing beside him. Let him sweat it out by himself. He did the deal by himself and standing beside him makes her look like an enabler.

If she's smart enough to be a Harvard Law School grad, she should have been smart enough to either clean up her hair and face or better yet, NOT show up for a press conference that didn't involve her.

The message sent was that a two-bit hooker got more of her husband's undivided attention (and money) than she did on Valentine's Day eve. Pathetic commentary about a bright woman who could make it alone in the world.

From your link....

In January 2005, when she found herself pondering how best to come to terms with the job of political spouse, Silda Wall Spitzer sought the advice of a woman who was once best known for not fitting so comfortably into that role herself, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

What irony!

You can't make this stuff up...

She is attractive and has a lot going for her otherwise, and could likely do just fine without him.

Yes, it is an odd choice of words. There are a couple family photos of the Spitzer’s I've seen posted here on FR where the body language is quite interesting. Elliot seems somewhat removed and detached from the family. Just an observation.

Imho, he needs to resign asap, no question about it. Spitzer is an elected Governor and former AG who prosecuted people for these very same offenses. Spitzer is the ultimate hypocrite.

“I say that the longer we can keep him in office through this mess, the better it is for Republicans.” ~ ConservativeMind

I agree. So does Rich Galen:

http://www.mullings.com/dr_03-11-08.htm
Rich Galen (Mullings.com) excerpted:

“...According to Reuters, the complaint describes “six telephone calls between Client 9 and one of the defendants that were intercepted by wiretaps between February 12 and 13.”

It seems the john was a little tardy in sending along the deposit so the defendants told Client Number 9 that it might be a good idea to bring along an additional $1,500 to leave as a credit balance against future action “to avoid further payment issues.”

You an read this stuff as well as I can, but this being a Presidential election year there are implications. Political implications. Inasmuch as Elliot Spitzer has been a supporter of Hillary Rodham Clinton it has really BIG political implications.

If I were advising the Republican Party of New York, I would grab news accounts of Spitzer raising money for and/or campaigning with every Democrat in the State. I would demand that every one of those candidates (who are now, because of the political tsunami in New York in 2006, public officials) give back whatever money was raised with Spitzer’s aid back to the donors or to charity.

You may remember that Hillary Clinton first supported, then opposed, then supported, then opposed again Spitzer’s plan to give illegal aliens New York State drivers’ licenses. And she did that all within the same question at one debate.

As for Republicans in New York? They should hire Martha Reeves and the Vandellas to travel up and down Broadway singing, “Dancing in the Street.”

As for me? Forget everything bad I’ve ever written about the New York Times.

On the Secret Decoder Ring http://www.mullings.com/dr_03-11-08.htm page today: ...links to a summary of reaction to the Elliot Spitzer story ...Also a Mullfoto which I captured yesterday afternoon after the Spitzer story broke, and a Catchy Caption of the Day.
