THERE wasn't much sympathy on the streets of New York for Governor Eliot Spitzer, an anti-corruption crusader caught up in a sex scandal.
The New York Times said Mr Spitzer was caught on a federal wiretap arranging to meet a prostitute at a Washington hotel last month. Mr Spitzer neither confirmed nor denied the report, but apologised for violating his obligations to his family and his "sense of right and wrong".
Elmira Shirkhin, 27, who works in sales, said she wasn't surprised.
"It's what you would think politicians would do," she said, drawing a parallel to former president Bill Clinton's sexual dalliance with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.
"It's men and power. They think they can do anything and get away with it," Ms Shirkhin said.
Sales manager Christine Whited, 24, wondered how politicians thought they could get away with such indiscretions.
"Aren't they afraid of getting caught? They're in the limelight," she said.
"Somebody who's in the public eye, I would think they would fear getting caught."
As New York's state attorney-general before being elected governor in November 2006, Mr Spitzer built his reputation going after white-collar crime on Wall Street. As governor, he vowed to clean up state politics.

Spitzer said that politics isn’t about the politician, but about the ideas they bring. Yep, lets just separate the man from his job. Wow. This audacity sickens me.
I don’t understand how any of these people have the time or energy to find hookers and have affairs with them.
Being a politician must not be hard work at all. I have a full time job and there is no way I could find time outside of work, family and home to do stuff like this.
LOL... They have Elliot as part of their collection now?
He needs a new job. Callboy.
Since he is a super delegate - I wonder if someone sent him the prostitute - LOL
Tee hee.
What, no diamonds for Eliot? He gets a zero rating, poor guy.
His rates are a little different. You pay him 50 bucks and he screws you over royally.
I don’t want to know how he has to “earn” his diamonds.
Thanks Ernest.
Scandal met with disbelief on Wall St (Spitzer Scandal that is )

Well, there was plenty of sympathy for Bill Clinton back in the '90s when New Yorkers voted him into the White House twice, then voted his carpetbagger wife into the U.S. Senate.
New York liberals are getting exactly what they deserve. They set the Clinton precedent. You can get away with perjury, obstruction of justice, assault and even rape as long as the economy is good, you're charismatic and you can play the sax on the Arsenio show. Too bad for Spitzer that the economy is sagging, his charisma is lacking and Arsenio's show has been canceled.
I doubt that billy-boy would cough up 4 Grand for the bj???
Spitzer has been a bloated, self-righteous egomaniac for decades.
This scandal couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Get him outta here.
Over $4,000 for a “jump” and we’re supposed to be sympathetic? By the way, did the governor have a medical prescription for sex therapy that his taxpayer-funded medical policy was covering?
Oh, what’s wrong with me...that would have been Bill Clinton’s game.

He showed NO remorse fullness, but babbled about politics instead!!!
NUMBER NINE======WHAT HAPPENED TO ELIOT ‘NESS’ SPITIZER?
“I am a John-American.”
The impeached one eventually coughed up more than that - attorney fees, his legacy, his law license...
And Spitzer will end up paying a lot more than 4 Grand, which is already an insane amount to spend for a couple of hours with a babe.
It's Mike Nifong for grown-ups
Too bad. As a Seasoned Citizen who spent 8 years in the USAF and traveled extensively throughout the Far East and South East Asia in the 60's and was "exposed" to the flesh pots of Tokyo, Manila, Honk Kong, Saigon and Bangkok, among others (and who was merely an "observer" and refuses to admit any wrongdoing) I was curious as to what a $5,000 an hour hooker looked like.

Sounds a lot like Operation Gemstone.
"Later that year Gordon Liddy presented with an action plan called Operation Gemstone. Liddy wanted a $1 million budget to carry out a series of black ops ..."
"Other plans included bugging airplanes and the leasing of a large barge which would serve as headquarters for the President's lawbreakers. One of the bedrooms on the barge would be used to house local prostitutes whose job it would be "to go out and to seduce into the barge high campaign officials." Liddy said they were searching for high class women who would be seduced by the power of the Democratic staffers. "
Just a strange coincidence. Obviously the Governor never read Liddy's autobiography, Will, to walk deliberately into a honey trap.
Naaah.
He did it a number of times and at 5 years a count, he is screwed, even if he never gets jail time.
There is an old proverb: "Sin makes you stupid."
More homework for liberals.
spitzer was always a phony punk. I blame Pataki for him being the governor. Pataki destroyed the GOP in NYS. Now we have this. Never in anyone’s memory has this happened in NYS.
Over and above Doing The Right Thing, I can't imagine how desperate (or bored, or rich, or jaded) you would have to be to risk screwing up your entire life over this, especially when you consider the "self-service" alternatives available today. They had the "Mayflower Madam" on one of the news shows last night, and she opined that the risk of getting caught is part of the thrill. Must be. Thank goodness I will never have this kind of disposible income, if all it does is allow you to be a d!p$h!+.
I wonder if this will help the republicans running for state office this november?
Read a few of the articles posted here. It appears Spitzer has a history of hiring hookers. His bank flagged him with the IRS because he was moving unusual amounts of money around to cover his tracks with the Emperor Club. The IRS then called in the FBI. This is not a one time thing with Spitzer.
Does anyone know it the other call girl operations he shut down were competitors of Emperors Club? Did this club hire illegal aliens?
He used the alias of a donor! Yikes, why not create a fictitious one? Disgusting how he used his wife to get sympathy. He'll get none from me.
It definitely can’t hurt for Republicans to grab the office. But it’s NY - you never know.
