WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US dropped China from its list of the world's worst human rights violaters, but added Syria, Uzbekistan and Sudan to the alleged offenders in an annual report released Tuesday.
The State Department's 2007 Human Rights Report showed China, which has raised hopes it will improve human rights by hosting the 2008 Olympics, had parted company with countries like North Korea, Myanmar and Iran.

wtf

The USA is no longer the “shining city on a hill” when we ignore the wholesale oppressions carried out by the ChiCom regime against its own people.
Gah! ANNOYED!
Interesting.
Just getting ready for the Olympics.
Imprisonment, torture, and execution of people for being Christians no longer counts as a “human rights offense”. Only laws that don’t allow two guys to pretend to be husband and wife. Get with the program.
WHAT?!?!
More pandering by the White House to globalist corporate interests.
Bush is disgusting. His cronies in BOTH politial parties in Washington who are part of the Globalist Conspiracy are disgusting.
There is no depth to which this administration is incapable of sinking when it comes to pandering to inernationist interests at the expense of America and the American public.
I hate to say this but I’ve lost my love of this country, I really have, how sad ...

Agreed. Sadly, it appears money trumps all. Even life itself.
Here’s China’s human rights record for the world to see: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1350794/posts
Re: More pandering by the White House to globalist corporate interests.
Glenn Beck is one of the few who actually talks about this. Wonder when others will wake up?
Have to agree with you guys here. I still love my country, but stuff like this makes it hard.
On issues like this and immigration, I cannot wait to see Bush leave.
It is very disappointing to note how we look the other way with China. The idea we would use the Olympic hosting to convey anything other than a propaganda attempt, confirms what those of us said who opposed the very idea in the first place. China will use this to their advantage, as if it were anything other than what it is, a pariah state cruising for a bruising in upcoming years.
Our national leadership is so disappointing these days.
Seriously. The State Department stands for nothing. I bet this news will bring a wonderful organ harvest this year in Communist China.
Foggy Bottom is well named for it’s thinking...
If they’ll poison our medicine, will they do the same to shampoo additives? Having a bad hair day?
I thought recognizing Kosovo was bad...
This is the country we dropped from the list of human rights abusers!
The Voice That Remembers: A Tibetan Woman’s Inspiring Story of Survival
Lou Dobbs talks about it.
Duncan Nunter tried but the Media steamrolled right over him to assure the McCainiac got nominated.
I have had it with the surrendering attitude i have seen in President Bush.
The Economy is going in the can and all we have is the War in Iraq to look forward to.
The “war on terror” How do you like that? The Bush administration does’nt even have the courage to call it what it really is. A war on Islamic Fascism.
Is there a more complete source with details? Contrast with this pronouncement:

so...is Syria forcing their women to kill their own children?
What am I missing here?
Amen. Recognizing the terrorists in Kosovo followed by pretending there are no problems in China makes me wonder what the hell our government is planning for us?

Looks like China just fell out of the running for the top ten. The competition must have been fierce!
Wrong move!
Should have placed threat of U.S. withdrawal from the Olympics on the table.
The half-empty crowd is having too much fun. Don’t distract them.
So you think our stance towards China (this story notwithstanding) is appropriate?
MFN Status?
I might disagree with that, but it's not time to panic and pull your hair out, as some are doing.
But see, it wouldn’t matter if they improve. Hell, it wouldn’t matter if they threw out the commies and elected a freedom loving government. They’re the enemy. Don’t you get it? :-)
I’m actually trying to figure out if I care about this, if it means anything at all.
Chin was dropped from the list of human rights abusers. If not near the top, at the very least they should be on it. Unless of course you have proof that the gulags in Tibet are now closed.

Insane.
I don’t really know, to be honest. I don’t know if there’s a status that would be more advantageous in the long run than MFN. Perhaps there is.
But something I’m pretty sure of is that capitalism is killing communism in China. It simply will not survive there as people find more economic success, and inevitably more freedom. It’s unstoppable now.
Isolation from the world was what let the disaster of communism become the human rights catastrophe that it was.
IMHO.
Ummmm, communism exists side by side with captialism.
There are ISP’s, but they need to be registered. And all internet content is filtered by the govt.
Free speech? Forget about it. Carrying even a picture of the Dalai Lama can land you in prison.
Do some reading on China and then see if you still believe what you do.
No, they shouldn't have been dropped from any list, in my opinion, but the real story is not quite as apocalyptic as people are suggesting.
Oh my. These just killed a Chinese Catholic Bishop in custody in less than a day. They turned over his ashes to his family. This wasn’t the first time he was arrested for his loyalty to the Catholic Church.
I’m astounded.
I still love my country. You don’t have to love everything our leaders do to love the country. Good thing, too....
I am absolutely disgusted with W. He’s gone beyond Jimmy Carter territory.
Bush going to travel to China after he is out of office and give speeches for a million dollars a shot?
Bush caring more about what a bunch of communists think of him than his own people?
And that’ll never change, huh? As more of the people find success and economic freedom... they just won’t care about political freedom, huh? I don’t agree.
I know what they have been. I’m talking about what they will be.
Oh, nonsense. Geez...
So??? We will continue to get cheap items from China and that will keep our economy moving ahead. We will have more money to spend. (s)
No, they dropped out of the top ten. Now, whether this "ranking" means any more than an MTV web based survey is one thing. But what it does quite likely mean, TOO, is that there are a number of places around the world that are getting WORSE. Note the growing presence of Arab, African, and Middle Eastern countries on this "list".
How many countries still have operational gulags?
Any that do deserve to be at the top of any human rights abuse list....at least if we are to be taken seriously.
Hey now, I hope you're not including ~me~ in that "we". This is the State department we're talking about here. Nobody takes them seriously anyway. :-)
The State Department isn't "we". It's "them".
See y’all in Legacyville for the GWB Retirement Dinner, Szechuan Cat w/North Korean fruits & nuts are on the menu, with a fine Persian carpet to sit on.
