New Haven (AP) _ An eighth-grade honors student at a New Haven school has been suspended for buying a bag of candy at school.
Michael Sheridan, a student at Sheridan Middle School, was suspended from school for one day, barred from attending an honors student dinner and stripped of his title as class vice president.
Officials say he was punished because he bought a bag of Skittles from another student.
A school spokeswoman says the New Haven school system banned candy sales and fundraisers in 2003 as part of the districtwide school wellness policy.
Spokeswoman Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo says there are no candy sales allowed in schools, period.
The student who sold the candy also was suspended.
Well, it might have made him late for the gay sex class.
LOL - my daughter would buy candy at sams club weekly when we went there.....It wasnt long before I asked where all this stuff was going, thinking there was a party...she was reselling it at school for a hefty profit -
Does their rule really say that you can be suspended for selling candy? It’s one thing to “ban” it, another to suspend.
If you outlaw Skittles, only outlaws will have Skittles.
I just hope after he was suspended he didn’t hug someone for comfort.
“districtwide school wellness policy”
Seems like suspending an honors student is a pretty drastic remedy for enforcing a “wellness policy.”
It’s not clear if the school has a hatred of candy, or a hatred of capitalism. I’m guessing it’s both.
An Excellent Lesson for him - bureaucracies are completely worthless. Hopefully, a new FReeper has just been recruited.
How did I know that the admins in the story would have a hyphenated name?
And stripped of his title as class president.
He shoul’ve huddled with advisors and tried to cut a deal...ala Eliot Spitzer.
I’m sure the principal had bigger problems that should have been dealt with that day than a bag of Skittles.
Breathtakingly stupid. I hope there’s enough ridicule that the school has to backtrack. And apologize.
Good.
Candy is destructive and doesn't belong in school. Congrats to the the school officials for protecting this child from destruction.
In fact, candy is so bad that students should be punished for even thinking of eating it.
Maybe the school should hire a candy enforcer to search the subjects ( I mean students) for candy possession.
I wonder if they sell candy bars in vending machine in the teachers lounge.
Can Candy Rehab be far off?
Zero-tolerance isn't a wellness policy, it's a sickness policy. Wonder if the school would reconsider if a portion of all proceeds went into a school slush er wellness fund.
Skittles could be the PC candy of choice, with their rainbow colors and all.
Except during Lent when only potato chips and popcorn were sold.
I daresay inmates in prisons have more freedom than these students do.
