Student suspended for buying Candy
Drudge Report ^

Posted on 03/12/2008 6:08:29 AM PDT by Nashvegas

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) ― An eighth-grade honors student at a New Haven school has been suspended for buying a bag of candy at school.

Michael Sheridan, a student at Sheridan Middle School, was suspended from school for one day, barred from attending an honors student dinner and stripped of his title as class vice president.

Officials say he was punished because he bought a bag of Skittles from another student.

A school spokeswoman says the New Haven school system banned candy sales and fundraisers in 2003 as part of the district-wide school wellness policy.

Spokeswoman Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo says there are no candy sales allowed in schools, period.

I am so reminded of the slow meltdown in Atlas Shrugged. Dagney kept rolling with the punches as others “quit”.

Eventually though, real players quit supporting a fascist regime.

Stupidity. Yet they demand that student participate in charity. This is so sad. And the punishment is well over the bounds of the infraction.

Sounds like one of Huckabee’s rules implemented while still Governor of Arkansas....

But regardless, suspending him for buying a bag of Skittles? I bet there are kids in that same school who have received lesser punishment for acts of violence or insubordination...

The insanity...

Makes sense. After all, the Gov. of NY is about to get expelled for the same thing.

In what universe is this actually considered an appropriate punishment for buying a bag of Skittles? Amazing.

Nothing like sending your daughter who is a Brownie or Girl Scout to school only to find out they have been arrested by the school police for being administrators of ill health and wellness. Cookie sales are illegal and punishable by death.

I wonder if the schools will stand up and give back the same amount of money as per diem alloted for the children each school year to the state for taking the children out of the school.....in reality, it is only a feel good thing until it hurts the administration and cuts jobs the NEA will have to protest...who cares about the well being of children as they are only harbingers of STD’s and force teachers to go to work and earn a living.

My level of cynicism has reached such depths, that I offer the following theory: the candy buyer was a white male, and the school needs to demonstrate that punishment is not disproportionately leveled against minorities, so they look for the tiniest infraction in order to get their numbers in line

You got that right. Skittles are a known gateway drug.

When I was a kid I thought it was harmless. I listened to my friends (at least I thought they were my friends).

It started out innocently, just a few Skittles. But then that wasn’t enough. Soon I was chugging Big Gulps, keeping chewing gum in my pocket. At my darkest point I would eat the hard lumps that formed in the brown sugar box.

Now some 30 years later, I’m suffering the consequences of my bad ways. I have to visit the dentist twice a year. I have many fillings. I am overweight. I visit my pusher, Kwik Trip a couple of times a week for a Dove dark chocolate bar.

Don’t be like me. Just say no to candy!

The school has provided a valuable public service. The kid is obviously intelligent and motivated. They’ve taught him to at least mistrust and hopefully despise blind bureaucratic regulation and mindless “zero tolerance” policies. He’ll remember this for a long time.

The kid probably would have gotten less harsh punishment if he assaulted a teacher.

This is just lunacy. I suppose the public reaction will be heavily against the kid’s suspension. But those same people who condemn this stupidity are the ones who continue to elect the mayor who appoints the school board, and the city council that lets this kind of thing happen. They’re all Democrats too, if you didn’t guess.

So many articles for a considerable time with similar content of amazing Leftist policy and procedures have caused me to marvel at their audacity. Seems they are so convinced Americans want Socialism, and that they will/are prevailing with their Socialist agenda, that they are proceeding “Cart before the horse” with rulings one could only associate within a Socialist society.

And people wonder why we sacrifice to send our kids to Catholic school, where this kind of crud isn’t practiced. Pie sales are one of the biggest fundraisers, Girl Scouts sell cookies, Boy Scouts sell popcorn, and the kids are allowed to bring whatever treats they want to on their birthdays, Valentine’s Day, etc. Not only that, but they have treat days once a quarter where they can buy goodies (they are only allowed to spend a dollar). Of course, they still have good old fashioned recess and P.E., so they are getting the proper exercise to burn it all off.

If it was a dime bag of pot, would the kids get suspended? This is because of a “wellness” policy? Keeping a kid out of school is better than him eating candy? You can have candy but you can’t buy it off of someone there? How does that contribute to wellness? Those “educators” seem pretty stupid.
