Tacoma Mall Protest (Massive Anti-War Anti-Military protest)
Tacoma News Tribune community forum ^ | 3/11/08

Posted on 03/12/2008 6:49:47 AM PDT by NavyCanDo

I’ve received a warning from a couple of different sources, some military and some retail. (actual warning to follow)

It warns people (particularly those with stickers on their car that allow them access to military bases) to avoid the Tacoma Mall on Saturday March 15th from 12:00 to 5:30 PM due to protests.

It’s not a worry to me, because I loathe the mall and what it represents, and avoid it like the plague.

I believe in lawful protest, and I have myself protested this illegal and amoral occupation of Iraq, the lives being lost, the money being wasted and the permanent damage it’s done to our foreign relations.

But THIS protest pisses me off (for lack of a more articulate term)

You see, they not only want to target the recruiting station (one was recently bombed in Times Square, which is taking things way too far) but they want to “shut down business” (people who have nothing to do with this need to feed their families) and harass anyone entering the mall who may have “ties to the military”. (they’ll be looking for base stickers on cars)

So some poor mother, alone with her small children because her husband is deployed (just doing his job) is at risk of being harassed, her car vandalized and possibly injured by whack jobs.

CALL FOR FREEPER SUPPORT THIS SATURDAY

Anti-War Protestors will be out in force this Saturday 3/15 starting at noon at the Tacoma Mall with an agenda to disrupt commerce in protest of the military recruitment center in a building at the Northwest corner of the Malls property.

Tacoma Mall will be closed between noon and 5:30 p.m. March 15 because of a planned anti-war protest at the commercial center of Pierce County.

Local anti-war protest groups have announced their intention to "shutdown" the Tacoma Mall, specifically the military recruiting station in the commercial tower located on the north side of the property.

Military officials warn that protesters plan on distributing anti-war and anti-military literature as well as confront local recruiters or interact with soldiers, family members and civilians who appear to be military affiliated.

There are about 20,000 Soldiers at Fort Lewis, 5,000 Airman (USAF) and about 15,000 Sailors and Marines in the Puget Sound area. I think March 15th should be Military Appreciation Day at the Tacoma Mall. There is expected to be 100-200 of those anti-military protester there. We can out number them with a peaceful demonstration by showing our support. Please if you can show up and show up early so these freaks can’t get close to the recruiting station. Bring a flag, a banner, a sign, and most important a friend. Conservative Talk Radio KVI-570 is also putting a call out to its listeners to show up.

Even if you don’t live in the area – call the Tacoma City Council or Mayor and demand the city of Tacoma do their job and enforce the laws and ensure public order be kept and property protected.

Perfect Monday morning quarterback hollering at the TV set with all the “right” plays. Those protestors are there partly because of you. An “illegal and amoral” occupation? That is precisely what they believe, so be prepared for them to key your car, too. Then vote for the guy that opens the door so the “occupied” can visit here. Then you will get to show us what NavyCanDo.

Here is what the Military is releasing:

Recommend that DOD affiliated personnel, family members, retirees and civilians avoid the Tacoma Mall area on 15 March 2008 from 1200 to 1730 hours.

Local protest groups have announced their intention to shutdown the Tacoma Mall and the recruiting station located at the mall to call attention to the upcoming anniversary of the start of the Iraq War. They want to “Make it impossible for business as usual to continue as the Iraq War approaches its 5th year.”

Anticipated activities include distributing ant war and anti military literature, confront local recruiters or persons trying to enter their facilities, and attempts to interact with soldiers, family members and/or civilians who appear to be military or have DOD decals on their vehicles.

Recent protests against the war at the Port of Olympia have been marked by increased levels of violence. DOD personnel, family members and civilians should avoid contact, to include conversations or dialogue with protesters. Protesters may be filming activities for reporting in independent media or use in legal actions.

Commanders and supervisors should strongly encourage their soldiers, family members, and civilians to avoid the Tacoma Mall area during this time and to report incidents of violence to local police.

For incidents of violence, call 911
For non-critical information, contact Washington State Police at (253) 536-6210 or Tacoma Police Department at (253) 594-7800.

The only people who go to the Tacoma mall are the local street gangs. My wife and I lived in Bremerton, 35 miles from the mall, for 14 years. We went there 2 times. The first time was not as bad as the second. Middle of a school day and flooded with young teens. Most looked simply skipping school. Second time, it looked like a nation wide gang bang get together. I have never seen so many sideways and backwards worn baseball caps, baggy pants showing ass holes, strutting, gold chain wearing, street thugs in one place in my life. Worse than any COPS show. Gang Bang U. was what it was. We walked in, I saw this crap, zipped down my jacket for easy access to Glock, my closely worn friend. And we left immediately. We NEVER went back to that mall. It is a ghetto.

This may prove to be interesting. This is because I expect there to be lots of thugs, creeps and anarchists who plan to use the anti-war rally as cover to vandalize and maybe loot stores in the mall.

This also means that pro-military counter-protesters might be put in a situation where though they are typically non-violent, they may be forced to act to prevent felony crimes.

Granted, there should be more police there, but there is no guarantee.

Have you also protested the “illegal and amoral occupation” of Germany, Japan, Korea, Kosovo and other places the US military is deployed around the world? Or do you only protest “illegal occupations” under Republican presidents? And can you please give us a detailed explanation of the illegality and amorality of the US “occupation” of Iraq?

Activism is just another name for anarchy!!!!About 4 years ago, as my wife and I traveled, I read in the Indianapolis Star an ad for activists to parade and be paid minimum wages. Then in the Memphis, TN Commericial appeal, the same ad. Then again it was in the Houston Chronical, and last in the L.A.
Times. And all this time (from the early 50’s until then) I was naive enough to believe it was only those with, pure intents!!!! Paid activism, and by who? how phoney!!!

“The only people who go to the Tacoma mall are the local street gangs.”

Having grown up in Tacoma, I wouln’t go so far as to say “the only people at the mall are gangs”, but yes out of all the malls in the Northwest Tacoma Mall has the highest ratio of gang members and gang wanna-be’s. Another bad one was Seatac, but it seems to have improved allot in the last few years.

I avoid the Tacoma Mall AT ALL COSTS! There are really a lot of creeps there and I worry for my daughter who works only 4 or 5 blocks away from this Mall. I am going to forward her the link to this story so she can be VERY careful on Saturday.

I hope the same fate (creeps, thugs, and misfits) does not happen at the South Hill Mall which is only a few minutes from my house. I tend to frequent that a little more often (but still not very much)!!!!

This is practice for the Summer of ‘08.

Let us hope that the protesters are as inept at reproducing the atmosphere of the 1960s protests as the American Idol singers were of reprising the Beatles anthology last night.

While I applaud you for your not supporting the upcoming event in Tacoma, I find it difficult to understand the above. Illegal and Amoral occupation of Iraq? You'll have to do better than just posting rhetoric regarding your opinion on this issue. The Congress of the United States voted to give the POTUS the ability to use military force in Iraq. Thus, the "occupation" is not illegal. Amoral? So, you think allowing Saddam to continue his reign of terror against his own people, providing support to terrorist in the Middle East, allowing his country to be a safe haven for terrorist, and his desire to reconstitute his chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons programs is more morally justified than removing him from power? Sorry, not buying that argument. That was a cancer which should have been removed in 1991.

I agree, it needs to be re-iterated that “NavyCanDo” was only posting the information and the story...

These opinions in that story are NOT his...

I only wish I could be there to FReep this one...There are times that anarchy and thugs like this need to be severely beaten...If our government doesn’t desire to (once again) take care of the seditious and treasonous behavior, then I do not see any reason why a modern day solution to this is out of order...

Y’all been having to omany problems like this up there in recent months...

How’d all of that “port” blocking mess end up and those city counselmen and mayor (what was that town up there that blocked the transport of war materials to and from the big RO-RO ship???) and blessed the protester’s actions???

There is a radical Marxist/Anarchist organization in Pittsburgh, PA that plans to take over a recruiting station and cage the recruiters next Wednesday. I can’t stop laughing!

That is the exact recruiting station I joined up for the Navy at, in 1985...entered service in 1986 and served until 1992.

I will need to travel to T-Town on Saturday and may need to make an appearance at the mall to show my support for the recruiters.

And no, my recruiter never lied to me once...gave me the straight dope on everything.

“I don’t even go into the mall area. It is infested with gangs.”

SouthCenter Mall is also infested with gangs and punk kids. See the News This morning about gunfire between 2 gangs last night.

http://www.komotv.com/news/16632866.html

1 Shot at Southcenter Mall
TUKWILA, Wash. — One person was shot at Southcenter Mall in the 3700 block of 126th Place SE around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, according to police.

Police said an argument between two groups of teens and young men broke out in the parking lot outside the mall’s north entrance near the Johnny Rockets restaurant. The fight escalated until one of them pulled out a hand gun and fired more than eight times, hitting the victim.

The victim, whose name and condition are not known, was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Several of the store’s exterior glasses were shattered and nearby parked vehicles were also hit. Inside the mall, meanwhile, the sound of the gunshots unleashed sheer panic among shoppers and employees.

“I heard ‘pop, pop, pop.’ Everyone got down. I got down,” said one witness.

“Scariest thing that ever happened to me,” said another.

In the minutes following initial reports of the shooting, concerned callers told KOMO 4 News that their loved ones were inside the mall, hiding inside various stores and scared, not knowing what was happening.

Two off-duty police officers who happened to be at the mall spotted a suspect leaving the scene and trailed him while calling for backup. A police chase ensued in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 as the suspect sped towards Seattle.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, finally pulled over near the intersection of 7th and Marion where police arrested him.

“There were at least 20, 30 cop cars here, helicopters flying around and everything,” said Brandon Miller, who witnessed the dramatic end to the police chase.

Police also arrested a man who was found hiding about an hour after the incident and, upon being found, began running from police. Investigators are looking into whether the man was connected to the shooting.

In all police have detained four people, some of whom are refusing to talk. Police believe one gunman is responsible for the incident, but they believe several people may have been involved. Police aren’t sure whether they already have the gunman in custody.

Investigators uncovered two handguns at the scene, one of which is believed to have been used in the shooting.

Officials locked down the shopping mall immediately after the shooting. At around 9 p.m. officials began allowing shoppers to leave the mall, but the man seen running from the scene of the crime sparked panic among the crowd. In an attempt to control the chaos, police locked down the mall again.

Police then began conducting a sweep of the mall, alerting people at each store of the latest developments. Officers patted down each person before letting him or her leave the mall in case additional suspects remain at large.

Police do not know whether the shooting was gang-related; it is not known what sparked the fight between the two groups.

The investigation is ongoing.

The Tacoma Mall is the single most trafficked site in Tacoma

The mall and the recruiting center on its property target youth: the mall for their allowances and the military for their lives
