BETHLEHEM, West Bank - Israeli troops opened fire on a car in the West Bank on Wednesday, killing four Palestinian militants, Palestinian medical officials said. The violence threw doubt on prospects for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.
Associated Press Television News video showed medical officials loading the bodies of the men into an ambulance.
The Israeli military had no immediate comment.
Palestinian security officials said one of the dead was the commander of Islamic Jihad in the Bethlehem area, Mohammed Shehadeh, and two others were also members of Islamic Jihad. The fourth belonged to the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a violent offshoot of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah.
The shooting came shortly after the leader of the Hamas government in the Gaza Strip called for a cease-fire with Israel. Among his conditions was a halt to Israeli military operations in the West Bank. In the past, Gaza militants have claimed the right to retaliate against Israel for its operations in the West Bank.
Egypt and the United States have been trying to broker an agreement to stop daily rocket fire from Gaza into Israel and halt Israeli reprisal raids in Gaza. Other elements would be reopening the Gaza-Egypt border crossing and easing restrictions on shipments of vital products from Israel into Gaza. For several days, violence has significantly dropped.
However, the renewed West Bank clashes threw the deal into doubt.
Islamic Jihad leader Nafez Azzam in Gaza denounced the shooting.
"This new crime reflects the true face of the occupation," he said. "Killing still continues while they are talking about the possibility of bringing calm, but if they think that calm means Palestinian surrender, they are mistaken."
Israel Radio reported that the car was filled with arms and explosives, and the fugitives opened fire on the Israeli special forces. The report said the four had been on Israel's wanted list since 2000.

Scratch four off the list........
“The violence threw doubt on prospects for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.”
Like there was ever even the remote possibility of a “cease fire” between the Muslims/Islamofacists/Nazis/ Palestinian terrorists and any Jew or Israeli in the first place.
The Islamofascist Muslims will never quit or give up trying to kill any Jew, Israeli or American anywhere in the world ever. The Muslims/Islamofascist are simply insane primitive, backward barbarians for now and ever until they’re all dead.
> The violence threw doubt on prospects for a cease-fire
> between Israel and Hamas.
And from which alternate reality did this ridiculous statement emerge?
As if there will EVER be any more than a one-sided cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, with Israel being the only one honoring the deal until they just can’t take it anymore.

I love a happy ending.
I needed a feel good story today, thanks for posting.
Four down, 12,435,586 or so to go.
Should have followed it up with a cluster bomb or napalm...
This should not even be a headline. This is why the collective WE will never win the WOT. Four? Four? Four? Was it really four? Not three, but four? Oh my, the carnage. Sorry but unless the headline says, ‘Last Four Remaining Palis Killed’ it does not deserve print.
time to pick up the pace
Warning! This is a high-volume ping list.
‘The violence threw doubt on prospects for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.’
I silence terrorist loving liberals with this one:
If the Arabs laid down their weapons today, tomorrow there would be no more fighting.
If Israel laid down their weapons today, tomorrow there would be no more Israel.
First good news of the day.
I think it’s the Tavor; I got to shoot one recently. It’s amazingly accurate for such a stubby weapon (the and has lots of built-in gizmos.
Not widely adopted yet, but some of the Special Ops get them.
On this one, it seems that the Palis aren’t even claiming that “innocent children” were harmed - a good sign that the Israeli operation went very well.
The second to the last sentence:
Israel Radio reported that the car was filled with arms and explosives, and the fugitives opened fire on the Israeli special forces.
If the report would have started with that sentence, it could be written from the proper perspective and blamed the terrorist instigators for starting the firefight, and commending the Israeli's for quashing terrorist acts.
