Democrats find themselves in lose-lose situation (Barf Alert!)
The Chicago Sun Times ^ | March 12, 2008 | Andrew Greeley

Once again the Democrats seem determined to steal defeat from the jaws of victory.

Consider the possibilities after the Pennsylvania primary. Let us assume that Sen. Hillary Clinton wins it. However, Sen. Barack Obama still has a lead in election delegates and a slim advantage in popular votes.

There are two courses the party can take. They can leave the final choice to the so-called "superdelegates" whom the party has chosen to represent office holders -- mayors, governors, senators and such like. Having read the polls and noting that Sen. Clinton consistently loses the general election to almost any Republican candidate, the superdelegates, many of whom have no great love for the Clintons, tip the scales in favor of the Senator from Illinois.

What happens in this course? Many women who believed that it was "time for a woman president" are furious.

Sen. Clinton was a competent woman with great experience and a tough fighter for women's rights. All through the primaries she has been beaten up by males, both political and media males. They paid no attention to her "moral" rights to the nomination and left the decision to political hacks, mostly men. Moreover, they have not granted the voters in Michigan and Florida the right to express their support for Senator Clinton. The election has been stolen.

The opposite choice has two possible scenarios. The first is to change the rules and let delegates from Florida, selected against the rules, vote. Ms. Clinton is nominated to great acclaim. In the second scenario, Sen. Clinton wins a fierce and close battle among the superdelegates with many charges of dirty tricks and dubious promises.

How do the losers react?

If it was time for a woman president, many also believed it was a time for an African-American president. Sen. Obama was not only black, he was a brilliant young man with wide experience in American life, a charismatic speaker, and a gentleman who would not throw the kitchen sink back at Sen. Clinton. With help of Mexican-American voters who hate African Americans (and vice versa), the white power elite has stolen the election from a candidate who would have won easily if he were white. Bitter Blacks would go fishing on election day and the youthful supporters of Sen. Obama would return to their computer games. The Democratic party would implode for the next decade.

The Democrats need both massive African-American support and a gender gap among women to win a presidential election. Is there any way they can appeal to both against Sen. John McCain? Will not all Democrats rally against the war and the Bush recession? Given the bitterness of the primary, especially of its final battles, this does not seem likely. Nor does a joint ticket of both senators seem probable. Sen. Clinton clearly feels that she has the right to be president. She would hardly accept the number two spot. Unless he has lost his mind, Sen. Obama knows better than to get trapped in a Clinton White House.

Thus Sen. McCain, bad health and all, becomes president, the war continues and so does the Bush recession.

How did the Democrats get into such a mess? One must look back to the 1972 election and the "McGovernite" reforms which are responsible for both our kinky, kooky primary system and the ideology of victimization. That election was a disaster for the Democrats, though the convention was perfectly balanced among women and blacks and had rid itself of such white ethnics as Richard M. Daley and George Meany.

Take your money out of stocks and put it into gold.

Democrats find themselves in lose-lose situation (Barf Alert!)

From your lips to God’s ears! By the looks of things it is going to take some divine intervention to prevent these leftist thugs from winning come November!

I believe a better case can be made for the Conservatives being in a lose-lose-lose situation.

I would argue that both parties are self destructing in a race to the bottom.

The Dems could save Soros et al a lot of money if they’d just stick their superdelegates in a big hotel somewhere and let them duke it out

Oh, where to begin... Well, lets hit the high points, such as they are...

Once again the Democrats seem determined to steal defeat from the jaws of victory.

I feel for you - not having anything useful to say, thus starting with a hackneyed phrase like this.

... a lead in election delegates and a slim advantage in popular votes.

Oh, you don't want to get into that whole popular vote vs delegate thing again, do you?

...the superdelegates, many of whom have no great love for the Clintons...

They aren't the only ones pal.

Many women who believed that it was "time for a woman president" are furious.

The women, and men, I know who like the idea of a woman president are unanimously opposed to Clinton, period. They're furious that she may become President. They recognize that if that happens, it will be such an unmitigated disaster that it will be decades before the country tries that again.

Sen. Clinton was a competent woman with great experience and a tough fighter for women's rights.

I don't see how anyone could even type that with a straight face. Competent at what? Avoiding jail time for all the illegal activities? Oh sure, they were never proven, it was mere coincidence that all those around the Clintons were involved in illegal activities, but not them...

All through the primaries she has been beaten up by males, both political and media males.

So what, welcome to the big leagues. You think she deserves special, more-tender treatment because of her gender? That's discriminatory.

They paid no attention to her "moral" rights to the nomination...

What "moral right" is that?! No-one, NO ONE, has a right, moral or otherwise to the election. We, WE THE PEOPLE, have the right to choose. What an ass.

...left the decision to political hacks, mostly men.

Now who is making gender an issue?

Moreover, they have not granted the voters in Michigan and Florida the right to express their support for Senator Clinton. The election has been stolen.

No, the rules have been followed. When they weren't, the consequences were enacted. I'm sorry for the voters in Michigan and Florida, but they need to voice their displeasure (and act on it) with their state leaders. The leaders that decided to thumb their noses at the rules they agreed to abide by and then flaunted. So be it.

The first is to change the rules and let delegates from Florida, selected against the rules, vote.

That's not a first choice, that's a worst choice. You do realize it sets a precedent for the states to flaunt the rules in future elections and do as they dang well please.

Could this guy (?) be any more insulting and prejudicial towards any other groups? Hey, why not insult the Jews while you're at it? He just lumped about 90% of the Dem. party into categories, rather unfavorably. I'm insulted for them, and I'm a Republican.

...the Bush recession?

No, this is at best/worst a "media recession." Caused by the media and Dem. hacks repeating the mantra enough to erode consumer confidence and generate the economic slow down they predicted.

Sen. Clinton clearly feels that she has the right to be president. She would hardly accept the number two spot.

Ha, I wouldn't give you odds on Obama surviving his term with Clinton as VP.

Sen. Obama knows better than to get trapped in a Clinton White House.

That is maybe the one and only thing we agree on. I think Obama is smart enough to avoid that.

Thus Sen. McCain, bad health and all, becomes president, the war continues and so does the Bush recession.

You forgot... McCain's a tough old bird and finishes out his term just fine. And national security remains a priority, the fighting continues over there, not here. People wake up and realize they actually have it better than they did a few years ago and that the recession was all smoke and mirrors.

How did the Democrats get into such a mess? One must look back to the 1972 election and the "McGovernite" reforms which are responsible for both our kinky, kooky primary system and the ideology of victimization.

Funny, that victimization thing is so ingrained in you liberals that you are doing it right there. It is not the Dems fault right now for screwing up their own party. It is the fault of some jerks 30+ years ago... Hence the Dems are victims ... of themselves?

The column might need a barf alert, but as far as I'm concerned, the Dems being in a lose-lose situation is generally a good thing.

I stand 100% behind your post #10. I wish I could have put those ideas into words so succinctly.

BTW: If we’re having a recession here in Dallas/Ft. Worth, the rest of the country should be so lucky!

states to flaunt the rules

I think you mean "flout" the rules. "Flaunt" reverses the meaning I think you intended.

The only passage really worthy of a (Barf Alert!) here is this one:
Thus Sen. McCain, bad health and all, becomes president, the war continues and so does the Bush recession.
Particularly the vile, beyond the pale attack on Senator McCain for alleged "bad health."
But this is how Democrats operate.
No Republican attacked FDR or JFK for their real health problems.
That is just somewhere honorable men do not go.

I must state that this article expresses the true political situation better than most FReepers will admit.

It is going to be very difficult for either of these Demodogs to beat McCain. Many Dems and indys will NEVER vote for Clinton. Many Dems will NEVER vote for a black. Neither of them are likely to win a single Red State. Many Blue states are up for grabs for the Republican to win. This could be a true landslide when November comes around. I wish someone other than McCain was the GOP candidate, but we’re just going to have to make do with him.
