WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former Sen. Howard Metzenbaum, an Ohio Democrat who was a feisty self-made millionaire before he began a long career fighting big business in the Senate, died Wednesday night. He was 90.
Metzenbaum died at his home near Fort Lauderdale, Florida, said Joel Johnson, his former chief of staff. No cause was given.
During 18 years on Capitol Hill, from 1977 to 1995, Metzenbaum came to be known as "Senator No" and "Headline Howard" for his abilities to block legislation and get publicity for himself.
He was a cantankerous firebrand who didn't need a microphone to hold a full auditorium spellbound while dropping rhetorical bombs on big oil companies, the insurance industry, savings and loans, and the National Rifle Association, to name just a few favorite targets.

Silence on my part is truly golden. RIP anyway.
I remember him best as one of the senators giving Clarence Thomas a “high-tech lynching of an uppity black who deigned to think for himself.”
And he made his money how? By buying property and making parking lots to serve the same businesses he later fought against.
Metzenbaum became wealthy through insightful investments, particularly in real estate near what became the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, which Metzenbaum and his partner, Alva "Ted" Bonda, correctly envisioned would make for extremely profitable parking lots. By 1970 he had sold his interest in his airport parking lot company for $20 million.
AKA - Hypocrite. He made his money selling to 'big business' but he didn't want anyone else to make their's the same way.
That could be the very motto of the elitist Dem party: "Mine Is Got. Yours? 'Fraid Not."
He got his, everybody else can rotate. What a putz.

No comment Ohio Pings!
Metzenbaum once described himself as "born knowing how to make money."
He bragged about his ability to take advantage of tax loopholes, but as senator said he sought to erase loopholes favoring the wealthy.
Typical Democrat. It is OKAY for me to be rich but not for you.
no great loss
Good for me, I outlived another one of the bastids!
If I said that, I'd be accused of being anti semetic...
He will NOT be missed
No great loss. Watch for the long lines along the Washington mall waiting to cue up to pass by his coffin lying in state in the rotunda of the Capitol.
During the years of my epistemological conversion to conservatism, you remember vividly the foils on the other side. The Senator was one of them.
In regards to another Freeper's post about his abilities to find tax loopholes, you would be surprised (without getting into the details) how liberals love Clintonian higher marginal rates, yet hire the best CPA/EA's/CFP's to find every deduction possible to lower their effective rate. The hypocrisy is mind-boggling.
How do you like abortion now Howard?
Oooooh, very pithy! I love it.
You beat me to it! LOL I’m REALLY hoping I outlive big-head Ted.
I didn’t attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying that I approved of it.
Mark Twain
If you can’t say something good don’t.....
Not saying anything so do gooders won’t flame me
My late mother always told me it was impolite to speak ill of the dead, but I could make an exception in the case of this moron.
One more liberal turd to melt in hell.
Senator M was an uncle of one of my cousins in Cincinnati by marriage & so was at occasional family functions. Personally I found him quite nice (much like Kuchinich).. but a RAT is a RAT is a RAT..
I think he was the leader of the popular liberals who tried to keep Ed Meese from becoming attorney general.
People in OH are known for falling for this kind of politician periodically. Sometimes they never get enough either.
Burn in hell.
Him & Kuchinich were enough to get me to move out of Ohio back in the 80s.
Wasn’t he caught up in some kind of scandal involving the post office at the Capitol?
Maybe I’m thinking of someone else.
And he knew it was O.K. to pay people NOT to work! Thanks to those of his ilk, this state spends more money on entitlements than most.
I don’t know who brought that report out that Ohio ranks in the middle in terms of paying state income taxes. If that’s true, then we pay much more In Federal and City taxes, which of course leads to big business leaving this state, at the same time telling people who want to sit on their arses and get free (taxpayer)money to move right on in.
My mother also taught me only to speak good of the dead. So, here goes...
Howard Metzenbaum is dead.
Good.
Now why didn’t I think of that? Thanks for the smile.
His son-in-law wanted to be the first Jewish president - even changed his name to try to improve his chances. It appears that his political strategy didn’t work.
Interesting. Identified as a Democrat in the first sentence... (compare Spitzer)
“a feisty self-made millionaire” who once accused fellow Democrat John Glenn of never having held a job.
I'm sure lots of idiot Dems in Cleveland & Youngstown are already petitioning the pope to have this old commie-lover canonized as a saint!
