DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Authorities have charged a suspect in the slaying of the University of North Carolina student president with the January killing of a Duke University graduate student.

A warrant filed Thursday charges 17-year-old Lawrence Alvin Lovette Jr. with first-degree murder in the death of Abhijit Mahato.

The 29-year-old computational mechanics doctoral student was found shot to death inside his apartment in January.

Authorities have charged both Lovette and Demario James Atwater with first-degree murder in the death of Eve Carson. The 22-year-old was found last week lying on a street about a mile from campus.

Local thugs seem to try and target university students around here too, thinking they have money. I am a living testament that, just because you are in college, doesn’t mean you are wealthy. I hope they bury him under the jail. How dare he take someone else’s child away from them, especially for money.

That seems to be a common mentality. A related mentality is that if you dress in business attire, you have money as well.

This vile POS took everything his two victims were and everything that they’d ever be from them. If he gets anything but the death penalty it will be a gross miscarriage of justice, but hey he’s black and poor, so that makes it OK (or at least it will with a black jury I smell an OJ in the making)

Hmmm wonder what the reasoning or lack of for targeting college students or was it a coincidence that they were both students.

Of all the campus massacres in the last decade and now possibly students of higher learning being murdered one by one would the thought of Demonic taunting of those with weak links in their mind/body/spirit was or is an influence in these tragedies.

Humans with a dim outlook on their own future/life taking the lives of those thriving with working towards a bright future.

I just saw footage of the perp being taken by LEO into jail...they were for sure not walking him in with compassionate handling HAH they were yanking his sorry butt into that building.

Justice will be served however that cannot replace the loss to the Mother/Father and loved ones.

My husband and I were talking about letting our daughter learn how to handle a gun for when she goes off to college in a few years. She has some friends who hunt who are offering to help her learn to shoot. I told her I think we need to go to a gun range, not a friend’s property.

Probably a lot simpler than that. There are two classes of people who are almost sure to be unarmed. Recent arrivals from the airport (the security makes it too big a pain to carry through) and college students (whose campus anti-gun policies make it a virtual certainty that they won't be toting.)

The current college anti-gun policies ensure that your daughter won't be able to carry 90% of the time even if she gets a license (which she won't be able to unless she's 21 anyway)

The murder of the graduate student was all over the news. They didn’t post his picture but it got a lot of publicity. He was an engineering major from either India or Bangladesh.

The latest victim was president of the student government, a Morehead scholar, and on the board of trustees of the school. She was well known in the community.

It’s too bad that the lives of two bright, productive students were snuffed out by an idiot from the bottom of the gene pool.

If you're talking about the first arrest that guy was doing that himself. My guess is he was trying to make it look like "the man" was mishandling him. Those cops were walking confidently & calmly. Watch the video again & see how all that "bouncing" is completely on his part.

Bob Carson, March 9, 2008
These words were written by Eve’s father, and were shared at the memorial service for Eve held in Athens, Georgia, on March 9.

I’ve always cherished the look Eve greeted me with as I held her in the delivery room. She was wide awake, and she sweetly peered right into my eyes with such pleasure … as if saying thanks and “I’m so glad to be here now dad.” A specialist would say it was a reaction to the newness or just being unadjusted to the hospital birthing room, but please believe me, something was just a touch different about Eve from birth.

Every parent knows how special their child can be. We know from our own lives that growth and growing up are best continued over a lifetime. But there seems to be a moment early on, when a parent can look at their child and know that they’ve got the building blocks and the character for a good life. I feel blessed because I had that moment with both of my loving children at early ages. I call it my Papua New Guinea moment … when, should your child be lost upon a distant shore and even in a different culture, that child would grow up into a fine, helpful, caring person.

The senseless murder of my sweet, sweet Eve is sadness defined, unfathomable and bottomless, but so appreciatively interrupted by each friend or family member who shares our grief.

Yesterday, a red-tailed hawk glided effortlessly close to my car as I drove from my mother’s home. It touched more deeply than normal. To me, these moments with nature represent a circle of everlasting life, but so also, do the friends of Eve and Andrew ... and the babies of relatives and neighbors and friends.

The irony of Eve’s murder is that she, along with these blessed friends and fellow students, are the ones who can solve the most pressing problems of this time. Please don’t attribute this to hyperbole or relate it to a father’s sadness. I see a stunningly beautiful convergence of talent and caring in this, our children’s, generation. It is the most fantastic realization.

I believe that these kids, along with their peers around the globe, can reach reasoned solutions for mitigating violence and tackling many of the inequities of poverty, prejudice, inadequate health care and under-education. This is no pie-in-the-sky wish! These kids are smart! They’re so capable.

They’re more productive because they collaborate and communicate like no generation before them. And what is even more wonderful is their generosity. Isn’t that tremendous?

There are needs now, and there are reasons for and solutions to those needs. Those dilemmas that keep getting shuffled along by our generation will gain solutions from the student sitting near you, your friends’ sons and daughters, or the young mentored student from another place.

But I must tell you — even with an aching heart, and yet with such hope and love — that the friends of Eve, and their generation, will not be denied. They’ve got miles to go, and missions to keep, and we will be so much better for their undaunted perseverance!

May God bless each one of you.

I highly recommend she learn how to handle firearms and practice regularly so she becomes familiar with them. It makes it second nature should she ever have to use it to protect herself or loved ones.

If she doesn’t live on campus she can keep it at her apt. I wish her the best! College was so fun!!

Also at the range to learn proper gun handling and practice.

Esp. if she is petite and attractive in regards to the sexual predators who also seem to lurk around college towns.

“Why must we wait so long for these abominations to be put to death”

If the killer was under 18, he can no longer be executed in the United States.

Which is why I propose _this_ amendment to the US Constitution:

“This Constitution of The United States recognizes the capital punishment to be appropriate punishment pursuant to the due process of law.
No person in the United States, nor in the several States, shall face such punishment unless above the age of fourteen years and six months.”

- John

I'm afraid you're right. But do follow your plan, get her used to unloading, cleaning, handling, and becoming familiar with her weapon of choice. The more often she does this, the better off she will be in the event she has to defend herself.

Excellent advice. My hubby and neighbor (police) took me target shooting with a handgun last year. I had NEVER handled a gun in my life.
Although I did ok, I was very nervous and afraid because I had no experience whatsoever. I finally said “enough” as I knew I needed some basic breaking in before I had any business actually shooting the darn thing.
