TULSA, Okla. (KFAQ) Officials say a military rocket crashed into a Tulsa apartment building.
Residents returned to their apartment at the Canyon Creek Apartment complex to find the power out, so they called the power company. While waiting for power crews to arrive, they discovered their bathroom wall had been knocked out. They initially thought it was a power explosion of some kind. Until they found what looked like a rocket.
Tulsa Police confirmed that the Air National Guard had been on a routine training mission in the area. Investigators say a military pilot told investigators he thought the rocket, with a dummy warhead on it, had dropped over a Kansas field. But the pilot admitted he never saw the smoke trail.
The FBI and agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were called in to investigate.
The rocket reportedly crashed through some trees then into the side of the apartment complex, knocking out a wall and power to at least two buildings.
No one was hurt in the incident.

A dear friend of mine, now passed away, was base commander at a Naval Air Station in South Texas.
He told me a story about a pilot on a training flight back in the late 1960's, who thought he had engine trouble so he bailed. Unfortunately, the plane which was in a slow loop, kept running.
Most of the time the loop was over the King ranch, but once per loop it passsed over a town. So Jack ordered two fighters up to shoot it down over uninhabited area. He ordered them to use machine guns and/or cannons, but no rockets because of danger to town.
They failed -- eventually the plane ran out of fuel and crashed. During the ensuing investigation of the crash, it was discovered that there wasn't a single bullet hole in the plane.
Needless to say, Jack completely reamed out the pilots for failing to hit an unpiloted craft, flying non-evasively, in a completely predictable flight pattern!

There must not have been any detectable trailer parks within sensor range. That's the Navy; and they crash-land whole fighters in 'em. The ANG are pikers.

Uh, well... yeah... But all my rockets are accounted for.
Seriesly though, I drive past the place on my way to work That section of the complex didn't seem to have any power as of six o'clock. All the local news vans were there lighting up the place.

Well, several years ago, an artillery unit fired six 155mm rounds of of Ft. Hood. They hit a barn and added a few small watering holes to a farmer's yard between the house and barn area. Lost a few windows from the house as well.
The forward observer didn't see the first three "fire for effect" rounds land near Sugar Loaf impact area, so they fired another three round barrage. Still nothing at Sugar Loaf. They had parked the artillery 180 degrees off pointing north instead of south.

The guys in Michigan accidentally doubled the charges (those bags of powder, I guess, I’ve never fired a 155mm myself).

hahaha! I work near I-44 and Elwood, so I’m really close to there. I’m sad I missed it, but it’s all the rage here at the shop. Everyone’s making missile jokes.
And yes, too bad it didn’t hit 51st. Tabu would have been a good place to take out.

"They had parked the artillery 180 degrees off pointing north instead of south." We "Old Farts' tried to warn the FA School not to dispense with manual gunnery training. They insisted on going to only computers and hand held calculators. The GIGO Factor was the result.
This particular incident, as I recall, convinced the Gunnery Department to add manual gunnery back into the curriculum.

The Texas Army National Guard used the wrong powder bags at Ft Hood, and landed one very close to a range house at South Ft Hood. They also sent two 155 rounds over the range edge at the Dona Anna range at Ft. Bliss. It is mathematically impossible, but one went just over the mountain range and the other landed within 100 meters of IH 10.

They were in the new Paladin which is totally an NBC clean environment. No ground guides used and they just park on the firing pads, and start firing. One E-4 or E-5 reading the compass degrees wrong and “UH OH”!

Investigators say a military pilot told investigators he thought the rocket, with a dummy warhead on it, had dropped over a Kansas field. The pilot was only hoping he had 'bought the farm'.

some nut replying to the story in the Tulsa World said it should have went through a recruiters window instead.
The replys slamming that notion were pulled from the Epitome of Free Speech “Tulsa World”, but the offensive rocketeering suggestion remained. We live in divisional times.
