Maybe he decided to change party affilliations just before resigning... hmmmm. (/sarc)

Some have claimed that the (R) means right side, as if you couldn't tell which of the two was Eliot. The text on the right clearly says that he is a 'Rat.

Can't blame the AP, they are just confused by a Democrat getting in trouble for sex...only Republicans are supposed to make the news for that, they just assumed wrong.

IN this case I thnk that you are misreading what you are seeing The (R) refers to the fact that Eliot is on the right in the picture, and in this day and age one cannot tell whehter someone is male or female by the name or the spelling.
It should have read Eliot Spitser (pictured right) ....
I know it’s a subliminal message but in the next sentence it claerly states the he is a democRAT

Some have claimed that the (R) means right sideIf that were the case, you would use a lowercase R then.
To: Cripplehawk
Joseph Goebbels would be very proud today knowing that his work is being carried out by the liberal MSM.
To: Cripplehawk
Let me guess. They added the ‘R’ in the caption so you know Eliot is the one on the right on the picture... in case we were confused and thought the wife is named Eliot and is stepping down as the governor of NY.

HANG ON..They are NOT identifying him as a Republican. He and his wife are on stage and they are saying he’s on the RIGHT, but using an initial which would seem to indicate he’s a Republican..no doubt planned, but a party affiliation it isn’t..

That's inconceivable. There are plenty of other ways to signal Elliot Spitzer is the one standing on the right without using a capital R especially when the wife is identified in the same comment.

"New York Governor Eliot Spitzer (R) holds a news conference in New York City with his wife Silda by his side, on March 10. Spitzer came under mounting pressure to resign Tuesday, a day after the Democrat, crusader once known as the "Sheriff of Wall Street" was linked to a prostitution ring."
Description mentions his party affiliation.

Must be lots of women named Eliot in the UK, which would confuse readers as to which one, on the left or right, is Eliot. Yeah, yeah...that’s the ticket.

Other than a bit overreacting....nothing. Seriously if they were trying to identify his party it would of been (D-NY or R-NY))
To: Cripplehawk
Must this really be posted every few hours? The AP has plenty of bias problems, and “guess the party” is a fun game when there’s a Democrat scandal, but (R) means “right” in this case.

The text on the side also says “(R)” though.
To: xjcsa
No-one should be calling you a shill for Yahoo, xjcsa.
That said, the (R) really does yell out “Republican”, not “Right” to most people. I don’t doubt Yahoo were trying it on.
To: Ouderkirk
It’s a lame excuse the media uses to confuse their readers. They never use (R) to indicate “right” when the perp is a Republican.

Oh come on! You know as well as I do that a great majority of the ordinary, average sheeple get their news from headlines without even bothering to read more into the story. Yes, it does mention that he is a democrat in the story, but the headline very blatantly implies that he is a republican. For most people that is as far as they will go and all that they will see.

For those people you are referring to, what does it matter? Ask them about the story 2 hours after the saw the headline and they will give you a blank look in return.

We know that the media is contemptable and this is simply another demonstration of that (like we needed another one).
But I just had a little trouble with it because it wasn’t in the format of Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D-NY) or Rep. Foley (R-FL)
